Their Berets In Fight

1931 SUFFRAGETTES - These University of Washington coeds are giving a graphic demonstration of their intention to win more recognition for their sex in campus politics.

The modish Empress Eugenie hats and berets of Washington's 2,704 coeds landed in the University student political ring yesterday to stir the campus male population as it has never been stirred before in a college generation.

Alda Martell, coed leader, served an ultimatum in behalf of Washington's women that they will be in the political picture, campaigning by torchlight procession and mass meeting as their mothers did in the women's suffrage days.

"We think the women should get in on University student government more than they do at present," Miss Martell, pretty honor student and board of control member, explained.  "Washington has never had a woman vice president and we mean to get one in office at the January elections."

Vivian Downey, student body secretary, is also a leader in the movement.
