Bread of Life Centre

It's no use to go traveling about the world in search of "sacred spaces" if I neglect the ones at home! The Bread of Life Centre at 3130 Third Avenue is one of those special places. Founded in the mid 1980's, when thousands of people lost their jobs through Mill closures and "downsizing", the Centre has grown and developed through the years. As well as feeding hungry people and providing "experienced" clothing and housewares, the Centre has become a place for folks to socialize and share a cup of coffee and a donut with friends new and old. Talking together, getting in out of the rain or heat, enjoying a good meal - the whole person is nourished here.

Bright and early on Sunday mornings another group gathers. Sitting in a circle we also share "bread" in our reading, prayer, singing and discussion. We have no formal name other than "The Gathering", the "Sunday Group" the "Early Service", but meeting at 8:30 am on a Sunday morning, we are certainly both dedicated and early!

Some years ago many of the people in this group struggled to create and write down what "faith" meant to them. A Faith Statement emerged which continues to grow within us. Some parts of it are "dated" but I think it still describes a lot of "who we are", and it is a "pilgrimage" document...subject to change as we grow and reflect.

The Bread of Life feeds many, all of us in need of community and nourishment of one kind or another.

getting ready for the road

The Community's Blessing for Barbara and Jessie

May the road be kind to you - May your van be safe and secure at all times.

May the rain moisten the dry earth - and the sun brighten your days.

May the culture of our vast nation continue to amaze you.

May the people who dwell in this land resonate with your soul

And may the wisdom of the God within continue to guide and nourish you always.

Shalom
