September 8th - Day 15 - Brooks Alberta to MooseJaw
Saskatchewan
The bumper sticker said: "I drove
the TransCanada Hwy - and didn't see a thing". I
guess referring to the vast expanse of Prairie and road.
So I was reminded to look and see: -the vast ocean of hay and wheat, the ever changing sky, the multicoloured fields, the well cared for fences, the trains so long that I don't understand how one engine can pull them all, the old farm houses now replaced by modern ones but left to stand in memory, the lakes and bird sanctuaries, the long ribbons of highway stretching into the far distance, the hills that sometimes replace the flatness of the land, the herds of cattle grazing peacefully in the pasture, the sight of buffalo, the skunk by the road (unfortunately, dead), the helpful people at the tourist bureaus, the coming storm which is now moved on after a display of thunder and lightning, the after-storm coolness. I'm sure I've forgotten many more things equally marvelous. In The Silent Cry-Mysticism and Resistance, Dorothee Soelle writes: "God can "close in on me," as C.S. Lewis puts it, on a summer day beside a flowering current bush, but just as well in a prison cell, or even a lecture hall. We have neither the right nor even the possibility to limit the number of places of mystical experience. To remain faithful to the road without roads means to consider every place, even churches, suitable for God and, with Rumi, to know that "placelessness" is the mystical "place"." Yes, even the red brick apartment house in Edmonton is a place where God can be revealed....if I am open to the adventure. |

Spending two nights at the Prairie Oasis in Moose Jaw. Had wanted to visit the Mineral Springs tomorrow, but I heard they are closed for cleaning. There is history to explore here, like the tunnels under the city, and the people are so nice they didn't even honk at this tourist when I blundered my way downtown for supper. |
The storm that was on the
horizon is giving an "on and off" display of
it's majesty. There is a heated pool at the campground so
I went for a swim and loosened up my old body. Had a good supper at a local restaurant - Wayne and Laverne's. I "pigged out" on salads which my body was craving. Did some justice to the other things too! At the next table I met Val and Donna who were also on holiday. My SPCA tee shirt does draw comment, smiles and introductions! They have connections in Port Alberni so we might meet again. |
