October 4th - St Francis of Assisi Day - "The Soo" onward
We woke up to snow showers this morning, then rain, then sunshine. And that's how the day went weatherwise! There was a change every three minutes! During some of the breaks I took pictures of Lake Superior..... |
The colours are just starting to change - a promise of "things to come". |
The changes lent a sense of drama to
the day. Without the darkness and rain and snow, the
sunshine and the clouds would not have been as
spectacular. But I tend to complain about the former, and
not appreciate the latter. I met a couple from Victoria
at a rest stop. We were shivering, and longing for balmy
Vancouver Island! We spent some time in the morning at "The Soo" - on the waterfront in particular. A ship taking passangers on a tour of the locks was loading. Jessie won everyone's heart and we had a great time chatting until the boat left. It was raining and snowing too much to take pictures. Whitefish Island, at the center of the waterway, is a sacred place for the local First Nations People. The area was also a meeting place for the different tribes, and a fishing ground. See the website for more... Continuing on our way around Lake Superior we came to a picnic spot by the Chippewa River. The beauty of the land is awesome. |
White River was a great stop for this Pooh fan. It is the place where Harry Colebourn bought a bear cub in 1914, and people and circumstances evolved into the Winnie the Pooh stories I enjoy today. |
