Black Clubs
At my school, like most there is a Black Pride Club, actually it is called the Black Student Union. If you want a white pride club you can’t have one. Personally, I don’t think there should be either, but if you can have one then you should be able to have the other. There are also clubs like the Italian Club, the French Club, etc. However, there is a difference; black pride clubs include all different nationalities and group just by color. Even if the club is called African-American, people with heritage from Jamaica, Trinidad, and other countries with black people consider themselves a part of the group, but people from countries like Monacco. That are in Africa but are white do not consider themselves part of the group. People tell me these clubs exist because blacks are a minority. Then why in schools in areas that are mostly black in hispanic are there still black pride clubs but would never have a European-American club? People also say that it is because of the past. Well, the past is over, and none of the kids in school were around when slavery was going on in this country, so that doesn’t make sense. When I am walking in the section around my school, which is mostly black and hispanic, I have heard anti-white comments more than a few times. I just ignore them and keep walking. I do not form a club with my white peers to "unite" against it. I’m sure that black people do face discrimination too, but what makes them think that it is more than what we experience. If a club is formed it should be against any kind of discrimination and open to all students of any color and ethnic background. In my eyes, black people are always trying to separate themselves, with clubs like The Black Engineer Club or clothes like FUBU (For Us By Us). But, if we separate ourselves then it is considered injustice? When I hear my black friends say things like "my people" or "my sister or brother" referring to black people, most of whom they have never met before, it is racism. They are judging people based only on color. They would never refer to a white person as their people or their brother. It has been proven that there are no internal differences between blacks and whites so therefore color is only a physical characteristic. Years ago, there was segregation, like separate water fountains, separate bathrooms, etc. That was wrong, I’m sure most people would agree. But now it is okay for there to be a club just for black people. Recently the Black Student Union at my school held an open forum, the flyer said something like BLACK OUT, OPEN FORUM, WEAR BLACK. If that isn’t racism then what is? I mean imagine the reaction people would have if that flyer said WHITE OUT, OPEN FORUM, WEAR WHITE. It would look like a meeting of the KKK. And in my girlfriend’s school, who is black, the place in the cafeteria for blacks was pointed out to her by another black student. February is Black History Month, but there is no white history month. I know there are more holidays honoring white people then there are for black people, but that is for the same reason that there are probably more right handed people that have holidays in honor of them then there are for left-handers…there are just more of them. There is no month dedicated for left-handers history so why should there be one for black history. I am not racist at all, I believe in total and complete equality, therefore I do have problems with clubs that segregate.
