Wicca is one of the fastest- growing religions in America today. That's right...Wicca is a religion. It's not devil worship or satanism. In its truest form, Wicca (Witchcraft) is a nature-based, positive movement which seeks to answer the "big" questions (Why? What is life? What happens after death? etc...). As opposed to Christianity and other monotheistic religions (those which believe in one all-powerful God), Wicca maintains that there are at least two equal deities...a God and a Goddess. Some worshippers stress the importance of the Goddess over the God, often in retaliation from the centuries of patriarchal control and submission of women in the Christian Church. However, I believe that balance in deities is essential to the true nature of Wicca. Followers of Wicca seek to live their lives peacefully. They see God and Goddess in all natural things, and treat all life and nature with respect. |
There is no one Wiccan Bible. We write our own religious literature in the form of our Book of Shadows, a (usually) handwritten text that contains our spells, our prayers, our religious symbolisms, and other Craft-related information. Most Witches live by their own moral standards, which are often built upon the foundation of what is known as the Wiccan Rede. The rede, in its most abrieviated form, states, "Harm None." This means do not bring pain, sorrow, hurt, or really anything negative to anyone...not even yourself. These two words say as much to me as do the entire ten commandments. Wiccans also believe that Magick, a power which is inherent in all natural things, exists, and can be used to effect the world around us in a positive way. Through rites, rituals, and prayer, the Witch believes he or she can improve his or her life, the lives of friends, and lend energy to the earth. This works in much the same way that Christian prayer works, by concentrating on the needed change, sending energy (or thoughts) to the deities, and releasing the spell (or prayer) to do its work. The power of spells depends greatly on the faith of the practitioner. |
Another interesting Wiccan belief is that of reincarnation. After death, we believe the soul leaves the body and is reborn in another body. The soul has much to learn while on Earth, and it is reincarnated until it has learned all the lessons the God and Goddess want for it to learn. When, finally, a soul is wise, it then passes from its final incarnation into its spiritual state and enters "Heaven", or what is known as the "Land of Eternal Summer" to live forever in the presence of the deities. |
