George Beckwith paintings
George Beckwith spent many a long shift 1800 feet underground in the Seafield Colliery at Kirkcaldy in Fife. The coal seams of many Fife collieries lay under the river Forth estuary and Seafield was no exception. George's talent has produced many fine paintings of a dying and forgotten way of life.Wellesley, Pirnie, Leven, Michael, Wellsgreen, Earlseat, Hugo and many others have closed in the last thirty years until Longannet is now the only deep mine producing coal in Scotland. Several open cast mines continue the struggle for the rich minerals layed down thousands of years ago but none come close to the dangers and fears of miners far underground.
