Saturday 5 June 1999 They say you never visit the same restaurant twice ... but today we did just that! Following a recommendation from a local, we started off the day with brunch at Lulu - a trendy new eaterie in an up and coming area of the city, South of Market. It is actually featured in an Architecture book Nicki bought at SFMOMA. This was such a cool place where those in the know hang out - and not a tourist in sight at last!! A fantastic bruch of garlic sausage and beans and wood oven baked eggs, we headed off to hippydom to where flower power etc was born - Haight. This was like a cross between Carnaby St, Covent Garden, Camden Market and Notting Hill - hope that gives you a picture! A very colourful and ecclectic place indeed. We also travelled through Castro - the gay area - which was one of the most lively and friendly places we've seen - and lots of men kissing on the streets!. We also took a walk around Golden Gate park - a huge expanse of green. But this was no ordinary park - it was overflowing with culture. There was live opera, lots of museums (imagine Kensington Gore in the middle of Roundhay Park!) and people just hanging out. There was music and dance, rollerblading, cycling, sunbathing and general relaxing. A great place in a great city. We ended the afternoon with some last minute shopping errands. Back to Sephora, Sanrio, Maceys etc... Back to the hotel for a spot of packing before our last night out on the town. We had been so impressed with Lulu at lunch that we thought we'd check it out in the evening. It was also the night of the SF Opera Ball nearby so the area was awash with Limos. Lulu's was heaving with the beautiful people. Its speciality is food cooked in the oak fired oven headed up with oven baked mussels - absolutely wonderful! Leonie had chicken baked in the oven which we both agreed was the best chicken ever - what flavour! Nicki had a sort of Monk fish soup with fennel - perfection! Leonie also had a couple of glasses of local plonk - at $9 a glass! A great last night but sad last night in this fantastic city as tomorrow is home day ... |
