Burk/Burke Family History

This history came into my possession from my grandmother, Maxine  Rivette Kruse, daughter of Daisy Burke Rivette.

Th majority of earlier generations used Burk --the latter generations, the majority, used Burke.

The first Burk in the United States of our line was Frances Burk, who left Limerick, Ireland  probably around the year of 1740.  he came to the state of New Jersey, then to Pennsylvania, the part which was once West Virginia, near East Liverpool, formerly known as Pughtown.

Frances Burk married Eunice Merck or Marsh, daughter of a German Doctor or of German descent.
Their Children born in the United States: (1) John, (2) Michel, (3) Joseph, (4) James, (5) Luke, (6) Mary, (7) Katy or Caturah.

Mary married Morris Carr.

James, John and Luke all came to Canada (I do not know whether the other members of the family did or not) John came to Canada in 1794, accompanied by the Aylesworth and Conant famlies.  For confirmation, see the book,
The Trail of the Black Walnut by Dr Elmore Reaman.  John and James both received their land grants from the british Crown in 1798.  James came two years after his brother John.  Luke received his land in 1803.  John sold his land and returned to the United States in 1816.  Luke sold his land in 1808.
