Sending Instant Messages (IMs)

Sending an IM on AIM is easy. :) If the person you want to send an IM to is located on your buddy list, click on their name to highlight it and then click on the "Send Instant Message" button near the bottom of your buddy list window. (It's the one farthest to the left that looks like one little person with a bubble of text over their head.) An IM window will pop up with the person's screenname in the "To:" blank, and you can start typing your message in the empty window below that blank. Once you've finished typing your text, click on the "Send" button.

If the person you want to send an IM to is not on your buddy list, you don't have to click on anyone on your list, you can just click on the "Send Instant Message" button. You need to fill in the screenname in the "To:" blank and then type your message in the empty window below. :) If you had a name on your buddy list highlighted when you clicked the "Send Instant Message" button, just delete their screenname from the "To:" blank and enter the screenname of the person you want to send the message to.

Now, in order to send an IM to someone, they have to be online. If they're not someone you've added to your buddy list, you can figure out whether or not their online by trying to send them an IM. It'll go through if they're on or it'll give you a message telling you they're not online if they're not online. If they are someone you've added to your buddy list, they're online if they're showing up on your buddy list at the time.

Also, you will occasionally get an icon next to someone's name that looks like a piece of paper. (See Lady Teari's name below.) This means they're online, but away from the computer and have set up an "Away Message". If you IM them, you will get an automated message they've created telling you they're away. They'll get your message, but the only reply you'll get until they're back at the computer is that automated one.
