How to Set Up a Profile

Profiles work a little bit differently on AIM. You automatically don't have one set up on AIM, so if you don't want one for your AIM account, don't do what I'm about to tell you. ;) To set up a profile on AIM, go under "File" and choose "My Profile".

Once you've done that, you'll get a screen with various blanks. In order to fill in any of the blanks, you need to check the box next to "Allow People to Search for Me". If you don't want people to search for you, you won't be able to fill in any of the information. Once you've checked that box, you can go through and fill in as many of the boxes as you like. At the bottom of the window under all the boxes, you can uncheck the box next to "Allow only AOL Instant Messenger users to be able to see this information" if you would like people on the web to be able to view your information as well. Once you filled in whatever you want to and checked or unchecked any boxes, click the "Next" button.

You'll get a window which allows you to list five areas of interest, but you have to check the box next to "I am available for chat" to fill any of them out. Whether or not you do so, to continue click the "Next" button.

The next window is an empty text window. This is where you can fill in any sort of information you like. This information is only available to those on AIM and isn't linked to the directory. (Unlike the first window of information, if you unchecked the "Allow only Netscape AOL Instant Messenger users to be able to see this information" button.) When you're done, click the "Finish" button and you've got yourself an AIM profile!

If you have an AOL account, your AOL profile is available only on AOL and isn't connected with your AIM profile, so you can create both without them interfering with each other. :)
