Your Member Profile

This is an important part of the AOL community; believe me when I say that as soon as you enter a chat room or introduce yourself to a LOTH friend who is an AOLer, they will immediately search for a member profile under your screen name. This is what a profile looks like:

To create your profile: (which, of course, you don’t even have to do. This can be ignored if you so choose.)

  1. Click on "My AOL," then click on "My profile". You will get the screen above to complete.
Consider the following cautions when completing you profile, if you choose to do so:
  1. How much you reveal about yourself depends on how much privacy you want and whether or not you are using your real name.
  2. Spammers access these lists to look for profiles that sound like good targets for sales, etc.
  3. People will check out your occupation and pester you when you are online. (Remember, if this happens, you have your buddy list privacy controls and mail privacy controls to block these people from access.
  4. Giving your real name along with birthday, sex, and address can give unsavory types access to personal records in other sites. Be sure you never ever give your password or your mother’s maiden name to anyone online. AOL will never ask you!
  5. Don’t list anything connected to your password in the member profile. Someone will figure it out and you may find yourself "logged on" when you’re not!
If you use it wisely, your member profile can be a pleasant place to make new friends.
