In 1944 a young newly graduated nurse named ANN HOEFLY decided to join the US Army. Five years later she switched uniforms to the newly formed US Air Force. She was stationed at Fort McGill and made the Air Force her life because in those days a woman who was married could not remain in the military. In the late 1960's then President Johnson opened the doors for women to achieve higher rank. She found it easy " adjusting to military life, to taking orders, giving orders and accepting the material Changes and adventures." As she found then, she still finds, her sense of humor has always been there to help her deal with the "difficult situations in life." During her long career she was stationed at Fort Sam Huston, Columbia University (where she achieved her master's degree), Gunner Air Force Base in Alabama, six years in Washington D.C. as Deputy Chief nurse of the Air Force, Tachikowa, Japan as the chief nurse at the hospital there and from 1968 until she retired, she made yearly visits to Viet Nam. In her visits to Viet Name she visited nurses, pilots and bombardiers in the medical facilities. She also served as a flight nurse for a time during her career. She was the first woman to be awarded the rank of BRIGADIER GENERAL in the Air Force and is very proud of her life-sized photo of her with then Surgeon General Alonzo Towner, when he presented her with her star. She retired from the military in 1974, having served 30 years. For a time she lived in Texas and Virginia before settling in Summerfield, Florida, with her pets. Because of her career in the military she decided (before the law changed) she wanted her career more than marriage and a family. Today her pets are her family. She has 2 white Arabians and rode them regularly until not long ago. However at 79 she has since retired herself and them. She also has five cats and one dog(down from five)to keep her both good company and busy. She is also busy with her volunteer work,at St. Andrews Soup kitchen, playing golf, The Women of the Moose, and her 21-foot boat. In addition there are almost always people to be found playing in her Pool and she loves having a lot of company. She has a hearty, joyful laugh and to meet her is to love her. One would never know or even suspect that they were speaking with a retired General of the US Air Force when meeting Ann for the First time.
