Port Royal ~Habitation
PHOTOS - Summer 1998
Just this past week, my husband and daughter and I
were fortunate enough to make a jaunt to his ancestors' original home
in the New World -- Port Royal NS.
In 1604, the HABITATION was built by Samuel de Champlain
and others
as a communal living compound.
It was destroyed eventually ~~ these photos depict the replacement Habitation!
* The SAME MATERIALS were used in its construction!
* It has the SAME DIMENSIONS as the original!
"Port Royal was once all of the land from where Port Royal and Annapolis Royal
now stand all the way up to Grand Pré.
The land was a signeurie and in order for a person to be granted that by France,
a certain amount of land had to make up the "signeurie" -
That is why we so readily read of our ancestors
being in Port Royal and in Grand Pré
as though they were right next door to one another!!"

This site was formerly known to its Acadian residents as PORT ROYAL.
The above view is seen directly across the water from the present Port Royal HABITATION.
Following are various views of the 'present day' replica of the HABITATION.
