Triskadekaphilia is a word that should be in the dictionary. Well, spelled properly anyway (which would be triskaidekaphilia). It's counterpart, triskaidekaphobia, is defined as an irrational fear of the number thirteen. But what about those of us who like the number thirteen? I myself am quite fond of the number, so I decided to name my website such, dedicating it to my "occult" nature and "sinister" undertakings. (Occult meaning hidden* and sinister meaning left-handed.**)
And why is thirteen such a frightening number anyway? Apparently the fuss started on a Friday, October 13, 1309 (this is a possibly inaccurate year) when some pope or another and some cardinal got together and excommunicated somebody. I dunno, that's just what a friend told me. Other ominous thirteens include the number of people in attendance at The Last Supper, and the death card in a normal tarot deck (which is numbered thirteen).
What people fail to understand is that good things go hand in hand with bad. Had there not been a Judas, perhaps Jesus's teachings would not be so well known. And the death card symbolizes change, as death itself is a form of change. We have to embrace both the dark and the light in order to be balanced and whole people. Just something to think about...
*I do indeed have a hidden nature, as do we all, but you won't find it here.
**No, I'm not really left handed, but when I work on my computer I use the mouse with my left hand, rendering all of my computer work sinister.
