This happens when you are on a fertility drug. The Dr. needs to monitor the size of your eggs and see how many you have. It is just like a pelvic exam only, they insert a probe (about the length and thickness of a wide felt marker). They move the probe around and view your ovaries. This is not very comfortable and it's even worse if you have a full bladder, so be sure to pee before this test! It's only uncomfortable when they can't find an ovary, or press on your cervix.
This is when they sedate you and go after the eggs. The procedure lasts about one hour and then you go to recovery for an hour. I wasn't really aware of what was happening. The drugs they gave me put me in a "twilight sleep" and I didn't feel a thing, it was very relaxing. The doctor goes thru your uterine wall with a needle and extracts the eggs. It sounds painful but, it isn't. However, I did feel like crap when I got home, but they gave me pain pills which I readily popped.
For the transfer I chose the TET method or Tubal Embryo Transfer. The success rate is much higher than if he put them in transvaginal. I was totally out for the procedure and it only lasted an hour. When I woke up in recovery my throat was sore (they put a tube down my throat during surgery) and I had a burning sensation in my abdomen. The burning felt like the barrel of a curling iron was inside my belly button. The nurse gave me some demerol and I felt much better. I got home and felt ok, just a little soreness in the belly. The doctor made three incisions. One thru my belly button and two just above my hairline. During surgery they fill your abdomen with air, so they can see better inside you. I didn't know this cuz I didn't feel any different afterwards. But, expect a few air biscuits when you get back to your room.
