I
am a 41 year old artist with a bachelor's degree in art and chemistry from
Wellesley College. I work for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
to help ensure the continued healing of the natural world. I see
the EARTH as female and embrace the concept of Gaia.
I recently adopted a part-time schedule at EPA so I could spend more time
creating art with a similar intention of bringing healing to the wounded
images of women.
For
over 10 years, I have been working in the medium of collage in a way that
results in realistic images. These images are often narrative, suggesting
a journey or adventure in progress for the women I depict. These
women are often representations of Goddesses, heroines, or female psychological
archetypes.
My
subjects come from ancient civilizations as well as current cultures around
the world. I want to bring these elements to light and to life, to
make them more accessible to us. For example, "Andromeda" is inspired
by the ancient Greek myth, but instead of being tormented by a dragon from
the sea, this Andromeda realizes that her dragon is within her. If
she can come to terms with her inner dragon, she can follow her dreams,
represented by the comet blazing behind her.
My
images combine elements of the natural world with symbols of the metaphysical
or enchanted realm, since it is my belief that we are imbued with the magic
of the unseen world. "Moon Meditation" is an example of this. The
woman gazes up at the moon and becomes transformed. She becomes one
with the Earth: as stream flows over her waist, and plants sprout from
her hips and her head. Like the EARTH, she is creative, fecund,
and alive with possibilities. |
