Courage of date-rape survivor is an inspiration to other women

Anne Marie Owens' feature on "Jennifer" the 18-year-old date rape "survivor" - a word I prefer to "victim" - sends an important message to women of all ages. (rape victim regaining life by telling her story; The Standard, Aug. 1).
Now in my 50s, I too am a survivor of date rape in my 20s, though I was a highschool teacher, not a student.
The difference? I did not report the rape. I did not confront my rapist. I allowed him to go unpunished and likely rape again. I told no one for many years.
My lack of action has taken its toll
"Jennifer's" courageous story underlines for us all how the fight for justice, in spite of powerful obstacles, can heal and empower.
And her story also reminds us that school personnel should provide safety and help, not more abuse. No one should ever be forced to sit in the same classroom as her rapist, or not graduate because of him. Here, too, is a plea to believe and accomodate the next "Jennifer" who steps forward.
"Jennifer" is a survivor, and her story and actions will inspire other women who find thmselves in her situation.
She is a wonderful role model.
Bravo!
