Beta Sigma Phi is an international organization for women spanning 23 countries and having over 250,000 members worldwide in 12,500 chapters. The organization was founded in 1931 in Abilene, Kansas during the Great Depression and was created as an outlet for social contact, self-development, spiritual fulfillment and opportunity for service. It is now the largest organization of its kind in the world.
Benefits of membership include scholarship programs for members, their children and grandchildren, group insurance plans, conventions, group travel programs, bed & breakfast program, car rental discounts, vision program and priviledge of transfer worldwide.
Internationally, chapters contribute over 200,000 hours of time each year to charitable causes raising over $2 million annually. Chapters contribute locally as well as to several special funds:
International Endowment Fund - (health research groups & charities.) Disaster Relief Fund - (aids members who are victims of natural disasters.) Breast Cancer Research Fund - (supports research organizations.) Scholarship Fund - (awards scholarships to members, their children and grandchildren.) Currently there are ten Beta Sigma Phi chapters in the tri-county area of Charleston. Each meets independently during the sorority year, but all share responsibility for annual joint projects that include such events as Beginning Day, Valentine Dance or Luncheon, Spring Tea and Founder's Day. Beta Sigma Phi offers women an opportunity to enrich their social lives, to advance themselves intellectually, and gain satisfaction from providing service to their community.
Members of the North and South Carolina chapters gather annually for the Carolinas' Convention. This year's convention is being held at Hilton Head Island, February 26-28, 1999. For information check out the Carolina Convention web site.
