Hi, I am Marilyn, grandmother to our dear spirited granddaughter, Ashley, our only grandchild. She is the child of my daughter, Kim, who is a single parent, and a very special niece to her Uncle Rick, my son. Ashley and her mom lived with us for the first five years of her life. So you see, we had plenty of time to bond. Her mother worked very hard at getting her bachelors degree, while they were living with us. It was just around the time that things started to go in the right direction...her mom working and Ashley, who had been a super healthy kid was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma in March 1996. Kim had just started a new job, and was unable to tend to all the demands of childhood cancer. The decision was made to have Ashley come and stay with me (I'm a nurse) for her chemotherapy prior to surgery. After the long hard chemo regimen and a loss of about 40 pounds, Ashley was ready for her surgery. Ashley had limb salvage surgery and a total hip replacement in June 96. Two fractures to her leg and several broviacs later, Ashley finally had some free time between her physical therapy sessions. This was the time for a "Make a Wish." Ashley's wish was to meet Jonathan Taylor Thomas (Randy on Home Improvement), but she also wanted to meet Rosie O'Donnell. So, the wish was combined. Ashley, Kim, my husband Dick and I were treated to four days in New York City. Her dream came true, meeting JTT, and she was totally speechless of course! We went to the Rosie Show, and met with Rosie after the show, when she showered Ashley with many nice gifts. In November, 97 a CT Scan showed metastasis to the right lung. She had surgery and had more chemotherapy in January 98 and finished in May 98. She presently has two areas in her lung which are being watched. We plan on a good-bye broviac party real soon. Ashley's summer plans are to swim day and night, hang out with her friends and enjoy life......and of course visit Grandma and Grandpa. Future plans......she would like to be a teacher or an oncology nurse practitioner.
