Myths about Domestic Violence


Hopefully this listing of Myths about Domestic Violence will dispel some or all of the myths you may have heard or believe.



Battering is random - a one time incident - only happens occasionally.
Abuser's are "Out of Control."
Battering is a family problem.
Women provoke the batterer.
Women are domineering - deserve to be hit - keep her in line.
Only uneducated/poor women are abused.
Women are crazy if they live with abuse.
Police will protect the victim.
Pregnant women don't get hit.
Once a batterer always a batterer.
Drinking causes battering.
A religious person won't batter.
If I get a divorce the abuse will stop.
If they just get out of debt the battering will stop.
Batterers are mentally ill.
Once battered always battered.
Batterers are unsuccessful people.
Batterers can't cope with high stress.
Children need a father even if he is violent.



I must mention that these are just a few common myths about domestic violence. I am sure there are many more out there. Also, I truly feel te need to mention that not only men batter but, women and teens as well.
