Shabbat Ritual

Celebrating with My Mother

After my father died in 2001, I could not light candles on a regular basis. Eventually I just stopped.I always intended to light them again but it was not until this winter that I started again. It was a combination of things. The first was my HanukahMiracle2004 and the second was finding electric candles.

My rabbi knew I had a fear of fire so she made the suggestion. It is not Halacha correct but I was not raised as a frum person so I had no problem with it. If only everyone could see it through her eyes. It is like a part of her springs back. There is a glow on her face and it is not from the electric candles. It is from within her.

She does not remember everything from her day but she remembers the candlelighting. her reaction has been inspiring me to read more about Shabbat and Jewish rituals. I encourage you of the Jewish faith to look at the links provided below for your own at home study. I also highly recommend the book _the Fourth Commandment_ by Francine Klagsbrun because she is a wonderful writer and it is written for the novice as well as someone more familiar with its rituals and rules.
