AGING
WITH
GRACE
AND
DIGNITY
Touching views of
how
to Stop Counting the Years
and Start Living
Them.
A quote from:
Natasha Josefowitz,
Ph.D.
When I was young, I knew the answers:
as
I grow older,I know the
questions.
If I had My Life To live
Over
I"d Pick More Daisies
"Nadine Stair"
I'd dare to make more
mistakes next time. I'd relax, I would limber up. I
would be sillier than I have been this trip. I would
take fewer things seriously. I would take more
chances. I would climb more mountains and swim more
rivers. I would eat more icecream and less beans. I
would perhaps have more actual troubles, but I'd have
fewer imaginary ones.
You see, I'm one of those people who live sensibly
and sanely hour after hour, day after day. Oh, I've
had my moments, and if I had it to do over again, I'd
have more of them. In fact, I'd try to have nothing
else. Just moments, one after another, instead of
living so many years ahead of each day. I've been one
of those persons who never goes anywhere without a
thermometer, a hot water bottle, a raincoat and a
parachute. If I had to do it again, I would travel
lighter than I have.
If I had my life to live over,I would start barefoot
earlier in the spring and stay that way later in the
fall. I would go on more dances. I would ride more
merry-go-rounds. I would pick more daisies----
Warning
"Jenny
Joseph"
When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit
me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and
summer gloves. And satin sandels, and say we've no
money for butter. I shall sit down on the pavement
when I'm tired And gobble up samples in shops and
press alarm bells.
And run my stick along the public railings.
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall
go out in my slippers in the rain. And pick the
flowers in other people's gardens.
And learn to
spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more
fat,
And eat three pounds of sausages at a
go.
Or only bread and pickles for a week. And
hoard pens and pencils and beermats,
And things in
boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And
pay our rent and not swear in the street.
And set
a good example for the children.
We must have
friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So
poeple who know me are not too
shocked and
surprised
When suddenly I am old,
and start to
wear purple.
MY CLOSET IS FULL
OF
NOTHING TO WEAR
"Natasha Josefowitz,
Ph.D.
Although my closet is full
I have nothing to
wear
My clothes come in different sizes
waiting
for me to lose weight
while in the meantime
I
have nothing to wear
I have alot of
shoes
some of which I keep only
for when it
might rain
as I wouldn't want to ruin
a
perfectly good pair
I own too many
purses
but they match
my many shoes
I
have hats I never wear
but they might
become
fashionable again someday
There is a
drawer full of scarves
That is because they never
wear out
The belts that are hanging
are too
tight right now
but may fit again next
year
So I stand
staring at a closet
full
of nothing to wear
I LOVE
GROWING OLD
WITH YOU
"Natasha Josefowitz,
Ph.D.
Your hair is
grey
your face is wrinkled
your skin is
sagging
here and there
You must wear
glasses
when you're reading
and I talk
louder
so you can hear
You're not as
lean
you're not as firm
your step is
slower
than it was before
You fall
asleep
watching television
and need to
nap
in the afternoon
I love you
better
as you grow older
but I like
best
growing old with you
