Some Tips for Surfing
Practise using computers and the internet at an internet cafe. Münchener VHS has
a FREE internet cafe (only for Teilnehmer or Teachers) at Schwanthalerstr. 2.
Most internet cafes charge about 3 DM for 15 minutes.
Get yourself a free email address that does all three: POP3, forwarding and web-based (like Yahoo).
Use these key commands to copy and paste text or URLs:
- Highlight the text that you want to copy.
- Click mouse button 1 to set your start point
- Hold down the Shift key and click button 1 to set the end point.
- Copy the highlighted text by holding down the Control (Strg) key and clicking on the c key.
- Paste the copied text by positioning the cursor, holding down the Control (Strg) key and clicking on the v key.
When you surf in the internet, you can save a lot of expensive online time by
looking at the pages later when you are offline. Make sure you load each page
completely (it says "Done" in the bottom of the window frame) and
then go offline (Trennen). Later you can click on History, and choose View:
By Order Visited Today from the pulldown menu. The last page you loaded is
listed at the top of the history window. Click on the page. If a dialog box
appears, choose Stay Offline
Almost all virus warnings are hoaxes (= the warning is not true)!
- Remember that a virus can only be in an ATTACHMENT to an email, not in the
email itself. The virus can't do
anything if you just look at the email, it can only work if you open the attachment.
- Be VERY suspicious of
anything that tells you to forward the mail to all your friends.
- Always check virus warnings
BEFORE sending them on to your friends. Search for information about the virus
at Hoaxkill. If you can't
find any information about the warning, forward the warning email to
hoaxcheck@hoaxkill.com They will check it out for you and write back to you.
