Space Colonies: Is it really such a good idea? Note-Ok, I wrote this essay from my CP 11 class as a result of watching too much Gundam Wing. Notice retract too much stament seeing you could never get too much of a good thing.☺ The advances made in technology, have made some people start to look towards space as a new home. There has been talk that maybe one day we will be able to create a dome-like atmosphere on the moon itself, in order to conserve space, avoid pollution, and maybe even find a cure from some diseases here on earth. However, is a colony in space really such a good idea? Space Colonies may do nothing other than deteriorate the human life span, cause worse pollution effects not only on the earth ,but also in space, and waste of human resources. When a human enters space, they face the risk that their body might not adjust to the fact that there is no gravity. People have watched on television how weak an astronaut looks after returning from space. Even with exercises, now being developed to help prevent this, the muscles and bones still deteriorate.(Dunbar) With colonies in space humans will have to spend long periods of time without the benefit Earth's gravitational pull. The muscles of the body will weaken there, including the heart and other major organs. When humans choose to go home after a pro-longed period it might have decreased their life span. Pollution is another reason people are seeking space as a new home/ But if there is nothing to prevent people from creating pollution here on Earth, what is to prevent them from polluting space? Not only will the ozone of the Earth have to deal with the toxic fumes and other items being absorbed into it from Earth, it may also have to deal with pollution trying to enter through the ozone from space. Natural resources have always been a concern of the planet, but some of the natural resources are a necessity for human beings to survive. The first problem is this will increase the need to drill for and use more of Earth's resources, disrupting the planet further. The second problem is the expense, loading the spacecraft and gathering the items will be an added expense to Earth's already overdrawn budget.( Dunbar) The third problem, is humans don't know how space and the moon will react to the introduction of "alien resources". So in conclusion, while it is good that human race is becoming more and more advanced in the technology department, it would not be a good idea to tempt fate. Space for now, has been kind to Humans but, does that gives humans the right to neglect the Earth seeing it is the origin of Human life? It would not be a good idea for humans to look to space as a new home, because it may deteriorate the human life-span, cause worse pollution effects not only on the earth but in space, and be a waste of human resources.
