Marc is the founder of The University of Michigan Dicks and Janes. Not only does he have a great tenor/bari voice, but he also has an eternally dedicated spirit and always trusts in his individuality. Marc even has an award named after him that the group gives out every year! The "Marc Robert Smollin Award" is given to a member who has worked above and beyond what is required of him/her throughout the year. Marc and I met in Winter 1998 through a mutual friend, Heidi Powers. She was the Stage Manager for a show Marc was in, Rude Mechanicals' production of David Ives' All in the Timing. We clicked right away, spoke Spanish obnoxiously to each other, and when neither of us made it past callbacks for an a cappella group on campus, Marc decided to create his own. Marc's wonderful voice can be heard on past concert recordings, my favorite being Hagamos El Amor (Ricky Martin) and Who Needs Sleep (Barenaked Ladies). Marc graduated from The University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre Performance in Spring 2000. He currently is a graduate student at NYU is Musical Theatre Composition. To Marc, my Spanish-speaking Soul Reaver (April 2002) - Thank you so much for bringing a cappella into my life. From the very first time we met during your Rude Mechanicals show, I knew you were a person who would be a big influence to me during my college years. Thank you for making my life so much brighter; your friendship has meant so much to me. Your honest advice, care (who else could carry me up three flights of stairs while I was screaming in pain!), and musical bravery have all been so wonderful. Thank you for trusting in "The Callbacks," and for having the courage to work hard and start your own a cappella group. I love you! |
