Tara and me at Coffee Beanery (November 1999)

Tara and Bill have just welcomed baby Sofia, their first child, into
the world! CONGRATULATIONS TARA!!! (12/19/01)

I first saw Tara MacLean in the summer of 1997 before my first year of college. She was a "side stage" performer at the first Lilith Fair, and I also saw her open for Sarah McLachlan at Borders that weekend. I remember falling in love with her music immediately, and especially liking the songs "Let Her Feel the Rain" and "Jordan." Tara's music is awesome, but what really makes her songs amazing is her lyrics. Many of her songs talk about subjects that the pop mainstream has tended to avoid (if you love the work of Tori or Alanis, you'd love Tara). Not only is her music incredibly insightful and healing, but she herself is a very open, fun, and caring person. No matter how tired she is, Tara and her band (Bill, lead guitarist and hubby, and Blake, percussionist) always make time for their fans after their shows.

Tara and me after the Girls' Room Tour (Summer 2000)

I have several favorite moments of watching her in performance, not including the wonderful moments of being awe stricken at her performance and beautiful voice. At the Farmington Hills (Borders), Pontiac, and Royal Oak (Coffee Beanery) shows, she reminded me of the development of the relationship I have with my father. She opened "Jordan" in all three shows with an introduction of her own close memories of her dad and how she always thinks of him when she sings that song. There was also a hilarious time in Pontiac when she called an intoxicated member of the audience who was harrassing her an "ass," which made everyone in audience laugh for about 2 minutes straight. But my favorite moment would have to be the encore number of the Pontiac show. At the request of an audience member, she sung and played on acoustic "If You Could" without Bill and Blake. When she asked us to join in at the end during the refrain, tears filled her eyes, and she almost started to cry. I think she was surprised to hear that so many people knew the words of such an unknown song. Months later, when she returned to Detroit for the Girls' Room Tour, she recalled that memory and said that it was moments like that which made pursuing her dream of a music career worthwhile.

Lyrics from some of my favorite songs:

FOR YOU (from Silence)

You are all I see sweet obsession in my soul
Fill each moment with your voice
Breathe your beauty into me

Would I die for you No I live for you
You know I do

You are all I know
Your mouth is all I taste
My breast between your lips
My tongue upon your waist, your waist...

DIVIDED (from Passenger)

....Well they say I've lost my will but
I'm just standing still
In a world that swallows cowards
For the time of killing time

I'm checking out the scenery
From as high as I can be
Come let faith be your garden
Always changing always still
Still breathing...

LET HER FEEL the RAIN (from Silence)

....Captured in a photograph inside her eyes
She'll wrap you in her blanket
And then she'll tell you some lies
And you will kneew before her
At her altar in the trees
Because they say no matter who you are
She'll bring you to your knees

Let her feel the rain
Won't you let her feel again
Feeling through the pain
Won't you let her feel the rain
Upon her face....
