From Your President's Pen

What a great meeting we had last month! Many "thank yours" are due!! Thanks to Mollie and Jeana for bringing prospective new members. Thanks to Kay for her committee's recommendations for the PIE service project including $500 instructional material for K-4 classes, $200 for uniforms and $100 for K-4 books for special days. In addition, we will continue providing designated supplies on a monthly basis. We also agreed to participate in the Say No Campaign by stuffing envelopes. Thanks to Jo for the new Yearbook. Thanks to Liz who brought the colorful scrapbook she is compiling. Last, but not least, we owe a big thank you to our District Four Vice-Governor, Kelli Owens, for visiting our club. Kelli's presentation was filled with enthusiasm and news about conference. She is looking for a conference theme including "stars" so please let me know if you have ideas. Joyce has submitted several good ones. We are truly blessed to have so many talented and generous Altrusans.

Three door prizes were won by members and guests last month so be sure to attend the August 19th meeting for another chance to win a prize. Of course, the greatest prize of all is the opportunity to congregate with other Altrusans.

Looking forward to seeing you,

Melinda

District Four Conference News

President Judy Hammerstein advised that she has signed the contract with Embassy Suites Hotel and District Four Board members will be meeting there September 25th to make plans. Mrs. Riley has been invited to speak at the Literacy Luncheon. However, we will have to wait until January for an answer because she will not commit to speaking engagements before three months prior to the event. We have also expressed interest in having a tea at the Mansion Sat. afternoon as part of free time activities. No response has been received.

Please remember to collect items for door prizes and goodie bags. All attendees receive both so we need many items. Altrusans from Enterprise, Dothan and Jack will also be contributing.

August Meeting

Our speaker for our August meeting is Margie McCarty. Margie is the Executive Director of SAV-A-LIFE. SAV-A-LIFE is a pregnancy crisis center which offers young women alternatives to abortion. Counseling on lifestyle, adoption and parenting are only a few of the services offered. SAV-A-LIFE is a faith based organization supported by churches and private donations.

Margie has been director of the agency for fourteen years. She is a marvelous leader and she gives a great presentation!! I believe some of the statistics and life situations she will share with us will amaze and awe us.

Personal Notes

Mollie's daughter, Mary Margaret was presented at the Southern Debutante Cotillion on July 30th. She was presented by her dad, Dr. Roger Kemp and escorted by Jackie Bushman.

Also, I'd like to thank Liz Turnipseed, co-chair, and ALL who helped in so many different ways to make the Altrusa-sponsored C.I.T.Y. Program Graduation Reception on July 22nd such a wonderful time of celebration for the graduates, their families, and the staff of the C.I.T.Y. Program. The Altrusans who were able to attend had a great time, too, and were inspired by the testimonies, raps, and poems of current and former graduates of the program. THANKS FOR A JOB WELL DONE!!! - Pat

My Mom will be celebrating her 101st birthday on Aug 6. We will be having a family reunion/ birthday party in her home community in Chambers Co on Sat. the 7th. - Chris B.

News Flash: We now have enough ABC flashcards for each PK4 and kindergarten student at E. D. Nixon. We will schedule an appropriate time to take these to the school.

TIME TO THINK E. D. NIXON

Don't forget to save magazines to take to E. D. Nixon. ALSO, please bring the following item, items, to the August meeting: toothbrushes and deodorant. The best buy on toothbrushes is Big Lots. The one on the Atlanta Hwy. had them for 38 cents each. The best buy on shoe laces is at Walmart. I usually buy the 22" and 24". We still need belts; the best buy is at Dollar General for $4.00. I buy the woven boys' belts and usually buy the medium and large. The best buy on paint boxes is at Wal-Mart and it's a RoseArt * color box for 97 cents.
