If You're Suicidal, Read This....
If you're reading this, you're probably feeling pretty low. Maybe you're five minutes away from taking your life, or maybe it's five minutes after you've decided you want to live. Either way, there is help. If there is no one around you whom you feel you can go to for help, then call 1-800-SUICIDE. It will connect you to a national hotline with people who have been trained to help you.
Maybe you're thinking right now that you have nothing to live for. I thought so too. But it turns out that I was wrong, and you are too. Maybe you don't have anything to live for today, or tomorrow, or next month, but someday, you will. You'll meet a great guy (or girl), have a wonderful career, children, and everything you've ever wanted. One thing that kept me from killing myself was the unknown. Not what would happen to me after I died, but what would happen in the future. How is it all going to work out? The only way I'll know is if I stick around.
A friend once told me that if I felt like I wanted to kill myself, that was alright. But he said I had to wait a day first. And the realization that you come to is that things *are* better in 24 hours. If they aren't, you need to wait another day. Maybe five minutes after you killed yourself, the phone would ring, and it would have been your boyfriend/girlfriend wanting to get back together with you. Maybe the mail would have came the next day and your first choice college had taken your name off the waiting list-- you're accepted! Maybe your Mom would have come in ten minutes later, ready to listen and to help you. But if you're dead, you'll never know.
Distraction can help until you gain new perspective. Try one of the following suggestions, even if it seems silly, or you don't think it will help. Just try.
- Bake a cake or cookies for someone you care about.
- Eat comfort foods such as hot cocoa, ice cream, mashed potatoes, or whatever appeals to you. No guilt allowed!
- Do a craft, such as painting, drawing, knitting, crocheting, scrapbooking, coloring, or anything else.
- Play with play-doh or real clay.
- Get in touch with nature-- go for a walk, work in the garden, feed the ducks, or just enjoy the scenery around you.
- Walk your dog, brush the dog, pet the dog. Go to the pet store to look at the baby animals.
- Get a massage.
- Go to a spa to get a facial, manicure, pedicure, or new hair style.
- Go to a nearby city-- drive yourself or go on a bus tour.
- Go to an amusement park, or play mini golf, or go to an arcade.
- Go out with family and friends, or have them over to your house.
- Learn something new-- either a recreational class, or sign up for something at the community college.
- Do what you used to do when you felt happy.
If you believe no one cares about you, you're wrong. Lots of people want you to live, they want you here so you can graduate, have children, and have grandchildren. And even if you think no one around you cares, I do. I want you to live. Why else would I have made this page?
