(Note: I first wrote this in 1997, several years before I discovered core shamanism. The main point is still valid, though. However, study and thought isn't just for the person first stepping on the path. It should be a lifelong trait. In that way, the person becomes an apprentice - for and to life. Otherwise, a vibrant, living faith simply becomes dead, mindless repitition of meaningless actions.)
One of the first things I ask someone who come to me and is interested in learning more about the ways of Spirit (especially the Craft, since that is where the majority of my lessons have come) is - what makes you so interested in it? Is it the spells, the tools, the image, or did the Goddess call to you? Do you want to learn how to psychically kick someone's butt or do you want to be the best you can with what was given you?
Well, if all you're interested in is kicking someone else's butt or putting on the image of being an all controlling SuperWitch who knows everything - then I would tell you to go home; put away your witchy toys, grow up, and get your own life together before you go interfering with others.
Now, if that someone makes the cut, I ask...are you interested in the science - the spells, energy play, and such - or are you interested in the religion? Nothing wrong with either track - they are just different ways of approaching the Craft. In either case, though, there is a lot of study, thought, and work to be done. I also add, in case there was any doubt on the subject, "Don't even think that you're going to get out without at least getting a smattering of the other subject, though. Just like high school, you're going to get an education, complete with 'required credits'. Unlike high school however, if at any time you are uncomfortable with what you are studying or are told - then you are 100% allowed to say so. If we can't fix the problem, then there is nothing holding you here and you are free to find someone else to teach you." I also suggest that they begin reading, discussing what they read and getting an idea of what it's all about. Most importantly, after they've read the books and discussed what they've learned, I suggest that they go someplace quiet and think about whether the Craft is still a valid choice for them - or not. While many elements of the Craft are fun, I believe that a person should be as well informed as s/he can be before making a life-changing decision like stepping on the path of Spirit. Believe you me, if it is an honest and sincere decision, it is life-changing.
