Gorean society is a mixture of barbaric and civilized. It is a world ruled by men who follow strict rules of conduct. Men who allow free rein to fierce emotion. A Gorean Male is known by his Loyalty, Honor and Passion.
The vast majority of women on Gor are Free Women, who live privately raising children, tending to their homes and operating within the confines of Tribal or Caste laws and customs. The estimation is that only 5 to 10% of the female population is enslaved. The Gorean female slave, a kajira, is usually the result of capture by slavers who visit Earth primarily for abduction of captives, although other luxury items are also occasionally taken.
Certain food and beverage items are highly prized on Gor and fetch an even greater profit for the slavers than the "barbarian girls" stolen and sold into the training pens of Gor. This is not to imply that native born females cannot be enslaved as a result of personal choice, capture or punishment for infractions.
Gorean Free Women are the respected mothers of children, kajira exist to please Men. Punishment of females for failure to comply with the complex social customs decreed by Men are swift and harsh, enslavement being considered sufficient in the vast majority of cases. Once enslaved, "collared," a woman remains a slave unless freed by her Owner. Considering the value of a properly trained and obedient kajira, this is a rare occurrence.
Male slaves, kajirus, do exist on Gor, but it is usually a result of conquest or judicial decision, not abduction from Earth. Enslaved males can win freedom by actions of heroism during times of crisis, fortunate circumstance, sheer physical strength, cunning manipulation or by outstanding performance as gladiators.
The Gorean male is usually neither sadistic nor wantonly cruel to females by nature. The social maladies that breed these distortions of personality do not exist on Gor. Females who obey the rules governing conduct are, in most cases, well treated by Gorean standards.
