Many of my ancestors served in the military or provided service.

CHARLES distinguished himself by serving in Bacon’s Rebellion.
Isaac Glass was in the War of 1812.
"[The Soblets] had arrived in Sédan only in 1637 (their original domicile is unknown). They fled to Protestant Germany sometime between 1681 and 1686; here they lived in Mannheim and then in Wesel. Abraham joined the army of the Dutch sovereign, William of Orange. The army invaded England and won a quick victory over King James II, after which William of Orange became King William III of England in what is known as the Glorious Revolution of 1688-89. Soon afterwards, Abraham Soblet sent for his family to join him in England, where they lived in Littlebury on the outskirts of London...."
"John, the son of the above named Anderson Pack, [my second cousin, 4x removed,] was taken prisoner on Flat Top Mountain during the Civil War, and Colonel Hayes, afterward President of the United States, claimed relationship with John and told him that his wife's mother was a Pack (this was Jennie, who married Jonah Morriss), and by reason of this John was allowed the privilege of the camp."
"Samuel Pack, Jr. [, my 5x great-grandfather,] and his brother, George, were soldiers in the militia prior to the Revolutionary War. They enlisted at Fincastle County and fought under Captain James Robertson at Fort Fincastle, later renamed Fort Henry above Wheeling Creek. This was Lord Dunmore's War of 1774. My 7x great-grandfather was Colonel William Allen. There is a Daughters of American Revolution Chapter in District 1 of Virginia named in his honor.
"...[A son of my 5x great-grandfather Issac Wiseman, Rev. John Wiseman,] was with Washington at Valley Forge; died in 1842, in his eighty-second year, and rests in the Methodist Episcopal cemetery, at Salem...."
I am the 5x great-granddaughter of George Glenn. "George Glenn was a private in the Revolutionary War, in Capt. Reuben Harrison's Co., Augusta, Virginia and Capt. Anderson's Co., Augusta, VA. He is listed in the DAR Patriot Index, Vol. I, pg. 271 as a private. (CL-171) (CL-259)"
William Carr - During the Revolution, William Carr contributed one horse for six years and Virginia reimbursed him £60.
"JAMES JAMESON our Scotch-Irish progenitor distinguished himself by personal bravery and military prowess when a young man at the Battle of the Boyne and other engagements, attracted the attention of William III who as a reward of merit conferred on him the honorary title of "Sir and Knight", which entitled him to "coat of arms". 23 years later in 1713, JAMES and wife JANET, migrated to North America with their seven children, settling in Lancaster Co., Pa."
My 4x great-grandfather was James O. Thompson. "James O. was born in 1756 and died in 1840. In 1774 he served as Lieutenant under Capt. Matthew Arbuckle at the Battle of Point Pleasant. He served in charge of the Fort for two years until 1776. He was also Captain of Militia from Monroe, was Deputy Sheriff for some time, and the History of Montgomery County at Christiansburg mentions he was given a warrant to arrest Daniel Boone but Boone escaped into what is now Boone County and later went to Kentucky.
"Samuel [Ferguson, my 6x great-grandfather], ALONG WITH Capt. Moore and Peerys, was at the battle of the Alamance 16 May 1771 (David E. Johnson, New River Settlements). The battle was part of the French and Indian Wars."
"In 1774, when men and supplies were being gathered for Dunmore to fight at Point Pleasant, SAMUEL paid for one hog. His name was found on the Auditor’s Accounts for Dunmore’s War, Virginia State Library, Richmond, Virginia, as printed by Mary B. Kegley in Soldiers of Fincastle County, Virginia 1774.
SAMUEL swore allegiance to the Untied States on 30 September 1777 from Montgomery County, Virginia. The original list is in the Revolutionary War Book at Christiansburg, Montgomery County Court House, Virginia. It is also on page 149, Volume I of Mary B. Kegley’s Early Adventures on the Western Waters. SAMUEL was at the Battle of King’s Mountain, South Carolina, 7 October 1780. He is listed as going with Thomas Peery (the distiller), Thomas Peery (the blacksmith), William Peery and John Peery. The above account was written by David E. Johnston in History of the Middle New River Settlements, page 145. He was appointed Ensign in Capt. James Moore’s Company of Montgomery County, Virginia Militia on 3 April 1781 per Summers in Annals of Southwest Virginia, page 751."
James Pemberton DeJarnette - He served in the Revolutionary War and was second lieutenant and then captain of what was called Capt. James Dejernatt’s Company.
William H. Carr - He served in the War of 1812 in Col. John L. Jennings Company of Halifax County. Spencer Morgan Carr swore to William’s service in an affidavit.
My great-uncle Estel Young fought in the Pacific Theatre in World War II and lost his leg when he was shot by a Japanese soldier.

Pvt. Estel Young, son of Mrs. Maggie Young, of Warford, Summers county, was amomg six West Virginians listed last week by the war department as being injured in battle in the Aleutians area."
My uncle Sargeant Gary Keats served in the Canadian Army in Germany and as a peacekeeper in Cyprus and Egypt.
Rev. John Clay - "...John ministered to Baptist congregations around Ashland and died there in 1781. We know he was buried in April or May 1781 when that Col. Tarleton was raiding the countryside. His men noted the freshly dug earth and believed the family had buried their valuables there. They pierced the grave with their swords until Elizabeth bravely scolded them and drove them away."
