Sometimes the smallest gesture can mean the most.

Here are some ideas that might inspire you to take a detour from your usual routine to bring a smile to someone else.

  • Give a friend a back rub.
  • Pay the toll for the car behind you.
  • Toss a few coins on the pavement for a kid to find.
  • Smile at a stranger.
  • Pay someone a genuine compliment.
  • Give blood.
  • Visit a home for the elderly to play cards.
  • Shovel the sidewalk of your favorite neighbor.
  • Leave coupons you won't use on the store shelf for someone else to pick up.
  • Bake some cookies for the nurses of your local hospital.
  • Volunteer to take someone's dog for a walk.
  • Send your mother a bouquet of flowers "just because".
  • On a cold day, hand a traffic cop a cup of coffee.
  • On a warm day, hand a traffic cop a can of soda.
  • Send a note to your favorite former teacher, telling them how much you appreciated them.
  • Let a few extra cars merge ahead of you on the interstate.
  • Stop to buy lemonade from a child's stand.
  • Send a relative a festive postcard.
  • Put a fun sticker on the envelope of a bill just for kicks.
  • Drop off some extra tennis balls at a local playground for the kids to play with.
  • Round up your old games to donate to a shelter for families in crisis.
  • Become a Big Brother or Sister.
  • Donate some clothes, appliances or cookware to the Salvation Army.
  • When a cashier gives you change, make eye contact, smile and say thank you.
  • At the store, let someone with fewer items ahead of you in line.
