I already am a Shella member; do I still have to FULLY register at eGroups.com?
Yes, it is highly recommended to fully register... it is the only easy way to fully control your personal and Shella subscription settings at anytime, including changing your email address that you receive El-Shella messages on, or your eGroups password.
You'll also have full access to all El-Shella features; including:
Search the previously posted messages
the ability to add to the group's events calendar
add / search the CV, Cars, CDs, or Second hand mobile and Books databases,
search the Members section for your friends,
use the Interactive Surveys.. etc
How
can I register at eGroups.com and have FULL access to El-Shella site and
features?
What
is my "validation number" and how to obtain one?
Go to http://www.egroups.com/register?method=displayregistrationform&url=/www (if you are already a Shella member) or http://www.egroups.com/register (if you are NOT YET a Shella member)
Click on REGISTER
Enter the EXACT e-mail you use to receive El-Shella (if you are a Shella member), if you use more than one e-mail (i.e. hotmail, usa.net, etc) please type the correct address you used to subscribe to el-shella.
Click Continue, and don't close your internet browser
(if you are a Shella member with a lost password) Choose a new password or click FORGOT password if you forgot yours to get it by e-mail
Go check your e-mail account that you just entered, while keeping your browser window open with the waiting registration procedure. Look for an important new message from "eGroups Registration". It will have a clickable link and a temporary validation number in it.
Copy that personal validation number and paste it into the registration page in your web browser that is still open. (If you no longer have the browser window on the registration page, you can click the active URL link in the e-mail message you received with the number)
Fill in the validation number that appeared in the e-mail and fill out the rest of the information in the form and choose a password.
That's it! Click DONE and you are now fully registered and can have full access to all our features.
You'll arrive at the "My eGroups" page, where you can control and navigate your participation in el-shella e-mail group.
From now on, when you log-in to http://www.eGroups.com using the same e-mail address and chosen password, you’ll be correctly greeted at the site, and the system will know what eGroups you are subscribed to, including El-Shella
Now go to http://only.at/el-shella and you’ll notice that all the previously disabled sections (including MEMBERS) are now Enabled
How can I add my personal profile so other Shellaweya can know more about my interests?
Since
el-shella is growing fast, it would be impossible for each of the current 1660+
members to send a public briefing, while keeping the list traffic both enjoyable
and low. Hence,
I strongly suggest that all of us check:
http://www.egroups.com/GroupMembersPage?listName=el-shella
Which is our Shella Members Profile section, an already existing advanced Shella site feature; you’ll see a long list of our members who choose to be visible to others.
Once there you can either manually browse throw the alphabetically ordered list, or use the handy search field to locate your friends (strongly recommended)
After finding the member you are looking for, you’ll see his/her personal profile by clicking on his blue e-mail address.
After registering, you can add a link to your home page, manage your Shella subscription preferences, add your personal picture, information about yourself, birth date, hobbies.. etc. for other members to see.
Of course you need to be FULLY registered through eGroups.com not only being part of El-Shella to use this advanced feature.

Where can I see the Shella Outings photos?
Please
check: http://out.at/el-shella
How can I join outings in my area?
Just
keep reading el-shella mails and search for the coming outing announcement in
your area, or better yet Suggest an outing in your area and others will join
you.
Where are other Shella members located in the world?
To make it easier for all of us to locate old or new friends near your area and maybe arrange local gatherings too. Please visit the following link after you register your Shella address then submit your answer so you can see where others are located too (you need to first register your e-mail address at eGroups, select a password, and log in to eGroups.com before you can gain full access to the Shella site.)

How can I automatically file the messages away from my everyday business mails?
In today's advanced email programs (Outlook, Netscape Messenger, ... etc) you'll probably find some kind of an automatic email filtering capability to move all el-shella messages to a separate folder and away from your normal day-to-day business e-mails, so you can read them in your free time -- I mean messages from el-shella not your business e-mails :oD
If you use Outlook:
Right click on your Folder List window to the left
Choose New Folder
Name it "El-Shella messages"
Click on the Organize yellow button on top of your email messages window
from the Ways to Organize panel click on Rules Wizard... to create a new rule to index those messages automatically.
click New...
select Check messages when they arrive option, click Next
select with specific words in the recipient's address
click on specific words
type [el-shella], click OK, click Next
select move it to the specified folder
click on specified
select El-Shella messages folder from the menu
click, Next, Next
click Finish
If you are using Netscape Communicator 4.X:
While in the Messenger window (Ctr+2)
Go to the File menu
Choose New Folder...
in the New Folder dialog type El-Shella under Name and choose it's distention (default is Local Mail which is recommended)
Click OK that will create a new local e-mail folder that will appear with your other folders (Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Trash... etc.)
Now go to the Edit menu
Click on Message Filters...
Click on New... that will open the Filter Rules dialog box
Type El-Shella messages inside the Filter name
Choose "subject of the message contains" and type [el-shella]
Choose "Move to folder" and choose El-Shella messages from the adjacent drop-down menu
Click Ok
Click OK
Can I know more about El-Shella history, previous international achievements and awards?
Yes sure, just
visit http://faq.at/el-shella
for all the info
How can I invite my friends and family to join el-shella?
As
you all already know, anyone can join this peaceful and educated group provided
they've read and AGREED to all the rules published on the official Shella site
at http://only.at/el-shella By
accepting to join el-shella you automatically agree to all our shella rules
found on the same site.
For new members to join el-shella they must follow one of the following options:
Important:
After subscribing to el-shella using any of the above options, you’ll receive a confirmation message from eGroups.com that your e-mail address was added to el-shella, Please keep this confirmation message for your future reference, it includes all our rules and many useful el-shella addresses and links.
Do NOT reply to or forward this personalized confirmation message to anyone, as this will result in the server automatically deleting your subscription from El-Shella
I highly suggest the first option; since it is the easiest and most professional way to FULLY register to eGroups.com AND also be part of el-shella, which will later give you full access to all eGroups.com advanced options; including modifying your shella mail delivery modes including setting it to NO-Mail while you travel, adding your personal photos, your profile, CV, or taking part in Polls, etc
How can I modify my Shella subscription settings?
It is possible for you as a member to fully control your Shella subscription preferences from the comfort of your arm chair if you are REGISTERED,
you can easily change your el-shella subscription settings to one of the many available options
Separate messages = you'll receive individual shella messages as soon as they are approved
Daily Full Digest = you'll receive only one big daily digest (newsletter style) messages with all that day messages inside
Daily Summaries = you'll receive only one small daily message including only that day's subject lines and a link to where you can read them directly on-line on our official shella site.
Web-Only = or no-mail when you are traveling for instance, but without loosing any of your subscription settings, and later you can change it back to one of the other settings to resume receiving mails.
Once registered, you can also completely change your e-mail address where you receive el-shella e-mails automatically
You can also add your color personal picture (portrait) so that everyone can see how you look like when they read your messages
We now have several databases in the DATABASE section where you can use to find jobs, sell books, flats, CDs, your old car.. etc.
A complete Survey section to know where others are located too!
A complete MEMBERS section where you can search for your old friends, family, and where you can also invite your buddies to join el-shella if they are not already there :O)
No.. you can easily change your el-shella subscription settings to one of the many available options

if you still believe that the number of daily messages is still more than you can handle, and you prefer to get them as a daily newsletter instead... try the FULL DIGEST mode instead of the default single message delivery option. A full digest is like reading through a fat daily-newspaper, you'll read only what you think is of interest to you through judging the SUBJECTS of the messages, hence my tip about always using relevant subjects.
It is possible for you as a member to fully control your Shella subscription preferences from the comfort of your arm chairs if you are REGISTERED, for instance switch between receiving separate emails and the one big Daily Digest whenever you prefer, or even No-Mail at all when traveling and can still read the e-mails on the site only.
When should I use REPLY or REPLY ALL?
As a rule, use REPLY when it is a personal message to the original sender of the messages alone.
If you think there is a good reason to send your reply to the whole group with all it's members, then hit the REPLY ALL to continue the discussion publicly after adding good clear thoughts to the topic, and keeping the subject line the same to make it easier for others to follow this thread and the related replies later.
Why can’t we send documents, pictures, attachments, programs or forwards to all the Shella members?
Sending files, programs (.exe) or pictures to el-shella is totally prohibited and is not allowed under any circumstances!!
This rule is to protect others from easily getting viruses, save bandwidth and members valuable time and money due to downloading huge files. Thanks again for your understanding and cooperation.
How many messages can I send to the group public address (el-shella@egroups.com) per day?
Please stick to the one-message per-day/member rule to keep the list traffic both low and interesting and to allow for equal opportunities for all of us. That's why you should also:
Always think carefully before sending to the group.. use your one message wisely. make it interesting for others to read and benefit from.
Always remember NOT to include a full copy of messages you are replying to, just small portions with the same subject line to keep the idea flowing. It also saves bandwidth and keeps the message interesting for other readers.
As a rule your message should only include around %10 of previously posted messages and %90 of new thoughts
Use very clear subject lines, making it easier for other busy members to know what the message content is all about. Don't use general subject lines like (question for you?, Help needed, Me again.. etc) something like (When is the next outing, For sale: a flat in Maadi, I need a job in Marketing.. etc) is more to the point.
Do NOT just hit the "forward" button and send to El-Shella whenever you get a nice mail from a friend somewhere! The least you can do is copy/paste the portion you like of your friend's mail, and take a few seconds of your precious time to write to us and explain WHY are you sending us this email with its info/quote/poetry/joke? If it's not relevant to an ongoing discussion, or starts a new one, or informs us of an event, or at least has EGYPT as a main theme then sorry! it will have to wait until the more important -and relevant- discussions and messages take their time! I think that's the least we can do in respect to those who spent time and effort writing us something "original" and contributing to useful Egyptian- related discussions :o)
Why are there rules for public discussions on El-Shella?
"why can't we play football in the Opera House?" and the answer is because the opera house is the place to watch shows and listen to music, if one wants to play football, they should go to the club or the stadium, instead of trying to convince the guys at the Opera to allow playing football on their front lawns :o)))))
I'm sure those of us who are interested in discussing politics, football or other non-related topics already know where to go for that.
Do you have to moderate each and every public message?
Yes, all messages sent to el-shella@eGroups.com has to be read and moderated by both Sahar and Mohamed El-Nadi daily to ensure that they all comply with our clear rules (http://only.at/el-shella) and to preserve the group harmony and cozy atmosphere.. any personal messages sent to any member on his/her private e-mail are obviously NOT read by us.
I sent an email to El-Shella and it was not posted yet, what happened to it?
As you know, all messages has to be moderated first by both of the list owners (Mohamed and Sahar) who are also very busy in their lives. We try hard to send the messages as soon as possible... but..
If your message is too long, or it's not relevant to an ongoing discussion, or at least has EGYPT as a main theme (please read rules and Shella description) then sorry! it will have to wait until the more important -and relevant- discussions and messages take their time! I think that's the least we can do in respect to those who spent time and effort writing us something "original" and contributing to useful Egyptian- related discussions :o)
What is the BOUNCING email warning?
Have
you ever received a bouncing WARNING from eGroups and wondered what that might
mean!??
A subscriber whose address is listed as "Bouncing" is one whose e-mail
host (local ISP) is reporting an error of some sort when egroups attempt to deliver
Shella messages to that subscriber.
This can be caused by temporary network disconnects, running out of disk space
for e-mail, non-payment of an ISP bill, or in the case of students, graduation.
If
after three days, all Shella messages sent to that subscriber have bounced back,
eGroups servers will automatically stop attempting to send more Shella e-mail to that address.
And will notify the subscriber by sending this test warning; to check if the
address is still valid. An
automated Warning message (probe) will be sent to the subscriber bringing his
attention to the problem so that he can trace and solve the problem with his
local ISP or system administrator.
The subscriber, if registered, will still be able to come to the website and read the messages there.
Mohamed and Sahar El-Nadi
