Dear Friend:

Health care and education can be defined many ways. For human rights activists, they are basic rights. For businesses, they represent new opportunities to earn profits. For international aid organizations, they are the building blocks of sustainable development.

In the current economic climate, the privatization of health care and education is gaining new supporters and detractors. Privatization of these sectors poses challenges as well as new opportunities for citizens in developing countries. For women, who often are responsible for ensuring that their families are healthy and educated, these changes call for new solutions. Join us to discuss these issues at our annual seminar:

Dr. Gupta, an obstetrician working in the Punjab region of India, began to notice declines in the health of the women and infants in her practice. She learned that the privatization of health care services in the Punjab was linked to the declining health of her patients. To fight the effects of privatization and press for greater economic and social empowerment for women, Dr. Gupta founded Isaaf International.

Researchers and advocates will join Dr. Gupta to provide analysis of the effects of privatization on education and health care in other regions and to suggest policy solutions. A second panel will feature CEOs from leading international development organizations that will discuss how their organizations are responding to privatization and globalization.

As the debate about global rights and responsibilities continues, we hope that you will join us on November 15 to discuss the challenges and opportunities of privatization for women around the world.

Sincerely,

Elise Fiber Smith Ritu R. Sharma

Co-Founder and President Co-Founder and Executive Director
