INTRODUCTION
Homosexuality in Spain was legalized when the National Constitution was
promulgated in 1978. Within the last 15 years, Spanish attitudes toward
homosexuality have dramatically changed. Spanish gays and lesbians are
coming out, and truly gay renaissance is taking place. Today, almost every
town in Spain, wether large or small, has its gay bars and gay community
centers. Gay magazines, newspapers and radio programs have appeared almost
in every city. Most major cities, including Barcelona, València, Vitoria,
and Madrid have passed partnership laws, giving same sex couples almost the
same rights as heterosexual couples enjoy. In 1995 Spain became the first
latin country to add to its Penal Code a clause forbidding discrimination in
housing and employment based on sexual orientation, as well as to strengthen
punishments on crimes based on hate towards gays and lesbians. Moreover,
there is currently a bill in the Spanish Parliament, awaiting passage, that
would establish partnership rights to same sex couple on the national level.
If the law passes, Spain will become the third country in the European Union with such a law in its books.
Spain has for years been Europe's most visited destination, and this is
also true among Europe's gay community. The island of Ibiza and the town of
Sitges (south of Barcelona) are very popular during the summer months,
while Playa del Ingles in the Canary Islands, is hopping with German and
Dutch gays year-round. Spanish night life is famous throughout all of
Europe. People don't go out before 10 or 11 pm, and the fiestas don't end until around 6 or 7 am. It is not uncommon to see traffic jams in the
streets of Madrid or Barcelona at 4am on a Friday or Saturday night.
Spain has come a long way in the last 15 years. A new dawn of tolerance,
social justice and freedom is emerging. The doors of the closets are widen
open, never to be closed again.
The following guide is an introduction to what gay Spain has to offer yet,
it is only the tip of the iceberg. As the gay community is growing so fast,
any guide featuring the whole country would become obsolete within months.
If you plan to visit any part of the county that is not featured in this
guide, we recommend that upon arrival in Spain, you contact one of the
major gay and lesbian organizations, who will be more than happy to help
and tell you the best places to see where you are visiting.
Thank you for your interest in Spain, we can assure you that your trip will
be an unforgettable experience.

BARCELONA
Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, is the second largest city in Spain.
It has always been the most cosmopolitan and commercial city in the
country. This is primarily due to the fact that it has always been open to
foreign influences and ideas. Through Barcelona, Spain was exposed to the
ideas of the Renaissance and the French Revolution. Catalonians have always
been known for being on the forefront of all the cultural movements in
Spain. Artists and singers like Dalí, Miró, Gaudí and Montserrat Caballé
are all natives of Catalonia. It is because of this entepreneurial and
artistic spirit that Barcelona has always had a very active and properous
gay community.

CANARY ISLANDS
The Canary Islands, due to geographical location, enjoy one of the best
climates in the world. The average high temperature year round is in the
mid to upper seventies, with lows in the sixties. It is not only the
perfect place to escape from the cold winters of northern Europe or the
United States, but also the ideal place to visit during the summer, and
escape from North America's sweltering summer heat.
Gay life in the Canary Islands focuses primarily in the beach resort area of
the Playa del Inglés. Within the last 5 years, this area has become
Europe's hottest gay destination. Nightlife is concentrated primarily
in the Centro Comercial Yumbo, located in the heart of the Playa del Inglés.
Nightlife doesn't start until well after 10pm. People usually go first to the bars
located on the fourth floor. After 3am the crowd moves to the
second floor where most of the after-hours clubs are located. The partying doesn't end until dawn.
The gay beach is located close to the Maspalomas area. The fastest and most
popular access to the gay beach is by crossing the dunes, which is also a
place to meet and socialize. To find your way to the gay beach just go to
the Hotel Riu Palace and follow the crowd. We assure you you will not get
lost.

the first area to be developed when Spain opened its doors to foreign
tourisme during the 60's. The Costa del Sol stretches from Gibraltar to
Málaga, along Spain's southeastern coast line. It is comprised of the
following towns: Málaga (the capital of the province), Marbella, Puerto
