Hi! One possible bug that I ran across was that I received this message
3 times, in two different versions. Did anyone else experience this? It
may just be a bug at my end, since I had another triply repeated message
last November, although that appeared to be someone who was just being
annoying. As for Beautiful Thing, Wow! I saw it again monday, and I was
practically saying the lines along with the actors! It lifts your heart
to see a film that doesn't make falling in love (gay pairing or straight)
into either a comedy or a tragedy, but just shows reality, with its
humour, its pain, and its joy. I hope that this film inspires alot more
like it.

To all:
Hi! I think that the duplication is because there is a BTE-E-mail list
AND a BT mailing list. It looks like the message I sent got sent to the
E-mail list, and then got CC'd to the mailing-list and back to me again.
This ONLY happened with the message I sent however. None of the other
messages I received from the list were duplicated.
Chat soon,

I Knew I forgot something! The duplicate messages I received were
slightly different apparently (2,120 bytes vs. 2,099) but I couldn't
spot anything. This also happened with the triple message (two short, one
longer), again by only a few bytes. I hope this helps.

A quick note to all you newcomers to the list, to show you it is working,
and invite you to post articles to the list for discussion. You can also
ask questions through the list, although we would prefer you to do that on
the Q&A page of the web site.

Subject: What a Movie
From: Gary

When I went to see Beautiful Thing, I was clueless as to any background on
the movie. I think I saw a blurb about it on a news list and recognized
the films name when it came to town. I am completely blown away by the
film. By comparison all of the other gay films I've seen come up short in
comparison. It was so real. I could relate to many of the situations the
boys go through in the film with each other and their families.
I was happy to see a film about gays that doesn't try to make them the
victim and doesn't pander to every single stereotype. I am lucky enough to
have an excellent art house cinema in my town which ran Beautiful Thing for
2 weeks and I was able to enjoy it several times. This is the first film
that I have ever wanted to purchase on video.
I wish every teen in America could see the film, there is so little offered
for gay teens here. And when the American movie industry includes gay
characters they are hollow at best. Hurray for the British for getting it
right.

Hi Beautiful Thing list subscribers,
I've seen the movie 6 times. From the moment I saw the movie trailer I
just about wet myself - I've never hassled a theatre about a movie
opening date before. I was at the first Sunday preview at the "Dendy"
in Newtown (inner-west Sydney, Australia). It was on for a few months
in Sydney and I'd often pop into a session after work when I'd had
particularly hard day.
The thing that keeps popping into my head about that movie is, "why
wasn't my childhood like that?". I really could have done with a Jamie
or Ste when I was 15.
Every scene in the movie seems to be relevant - you've got to keep on
your toes all time even on repeated viewings. The accents are wonderful
- some of the lines I didn't understand until the 5th time I saw the
movie. It's soooo English and really feeds my obsession with London and
Britian generally.
I've been to London before but I'd love to go to Thamesmead in the
summer. Can you imagine - there'll be all these poofs walking around
with maps looking for "Beautiful Thing" locations!

Greetings to all
A big thanks to David and Andi for making all this possible.
This movie has meant so much to me. I am still dealing with the coming out
thing, and seeing BT made me realize that all gay people aren't like they're
protrayed in most movies.
I only wish that my theatre had carried it for longer than a week.

I, too have received three copies of that post...but enough of that.
I have seen the film about 11 times, which seems pathological to me, but I
don't care. I am just glad to finally see a film which offers validation to
the existence of thousands of people...something hitherto not done (for our
age group). I just turned 22, but am at a very conservative university in
Stockton, CA. It's nice to see a film which is not about sex, but love and
romance instead. Beautiful Thing is beginning to fill the void that existed
in film. Cheers to all!

Beautiful Thing played for 3 months at the Lumiere Theatre in San
Francisco, most of the time on more than one screen at a time. I saw it
12 times, and each time was fresh, new. I enjoyed experiencing the
different audiences' responses to the movie - it was like a new
performance each time. At first the audiences were mostly gay men, but
later there were a lot of young straight couples mixed in. Of course, I
took all of my friends to it (straight & gay).
Now that BT isn't playing here any more, I am sort of going cold turkey. I
have the CD, but the video won't be released until April or so here in the
US. So David & Andi's web site, and now this listserv are my BT
connection for the time being.
Via a trail of serendipity I have been able to arrange to stay 4 days in
London in the middle of March. So, I am planning to visit the Glouster, the
Cutty Sark Tavern, and Thamesmead. Is anyone leading tours yet? Any
other suggestions of what to do while I'm there?

I too am recieving 3 copies: one from the sender to Beautiful Thing

). So maybe that will help you trace the bug,
David.

Okay, the list is starting to work... and YES, I did post three versions of
the same message yesterday, the reason being I was watching the server's
reactions :-)
Andi and I were out on the town last night, didn't get home until very
late, had too much to drink and so he's still in bed right now, and I'm
drunk in charge of the pooter!
No rest for the wicked either, all three of us (Mikey too) are off out to
the monthly gay event called Fruitopia at my Univeristy - first time for
all of us (hehehe!).
Mikey is downstairs in the lounge with his classical music, playing along
to it on his clarinet, which is usually okay with me, but the way my head
is right now, it's driving me potty.
I probably should apologise just in case anyone was miffed by Andi's two
posts to the list last night when we got in - to his credit he didn't
remember posting them until I told him I had received them :-)
Well, off I go to try and sober up, starting with a breakfast at 2.30 in
the afternoon - tsk tsk!

You don't know what fun is until you've seen me wired on caffeine at 3am :))
Add a few sugar cookies to the mix and the results are rather spectacular. :)

Subject: My own private Thamesmead
From: hamish

Back in October, when I saw "Beautiful Thing" here in Toronto, I found
myself:
- in love with the movie
- going back to see it whenever I could (someone described in a posting
their "pathological" fixation on the movie. Yeah, that was me, too.)
- very confused about my own relationship
At first I appreciated my partner, glad that I'd found love, even though it
was fairly late along compared to Jamie and Ste (I'm 28, and we've been
together for about four years). Then I got to feeling that my relationship
had none of the spark I was so drawn to in the movie. Now, January, it looks
like we're splitting up. Now, I wouldn't be so foolish as to blame the
movie; it just shone a light on the situation, helping me realize that a
relationship should be fun, exciting, and (go figure) romantic. I also
recognize that movies are ideals, and ideals, as Mr. Nietzsche said, "are
dangerous because they denigrate and stigmatize what is actual".
All that said, I find myself still coming back to this movie. And now
there's this group of us all responding to it. Has anybody else had an
experience like this?
God, I can just picture it now: me, single, going to "Beautiful Thing"
conventions, a bunch of Klingons gathered just down the hall.

Hiya All,
Some of you may know about IRC, some of you are already on
it. Just to let you know that We (as in me Davie and Mikey)
are all on it from 6pm UK time, on the UK side, most
evenings
Our Nick names are as follows if you wanna look out for us.
Davie or TheDavie = Davie ......obvious really :-)
XR3i-21 = Andi changing to XR3i-22 on 29th January :(
Mikey21 = Mikey
We get on irc.stealth.net, irc.uk.pi.net or irc.demon.co.uk
servers so if we're on, drop us a message :)) Davie says
that some people in the US may not be able to get on the UK
servers, but you'll have to try to find out, I don't know
much on that score. You could contact your ISP as regards
IRC, which sounds like the best or better option.
Catch you all Laters

I've been seeing someone since August last year, but from the start it's
pretty much been known that he likes me more than I like him.. the spark
isn't there for me.. He's been away working for a month and a half before
Christmas then another 4 weeks in January, due to return next week..
After watching the film for the first time on Monday it left me feeling
touched and moved, but also made me realise that the relationship I have
at the moment isn't really what I want.. We're more like good friends.. I
want to find someone to share that sort of thing with and it's just sad
that the guy I'm seeing isn't the one..

After many years of telling myself that I could live without the kind of
relationship Jamie and Ste have, the movie moved me to believe that not
only did I want a loving, romantic relationship, but that it was one of the
most important needs in my life. Yes, the movie is sort of an ideal and I
realize that, but the movie force me to begin looking for that sort of
relationship. I haven't found it yet, but I have made some wonderful
friends.
Another aspect of the film that affected me was the way, both explicit and
implied, that Jamie is treated by his peers at school. It is true that gay
students lives can be hell in schools, especially here in the US. It has
got to be difficult for teens to deal with their sexuality, much less come
out, if adults are still in the closet. This realization has blown the
door off my walk-in closet and that may be the most significant impact of
the movie on my life.
Gary
