David, I checked out the Sony website again and I still couldn't find
any mention of Beautiful Thing coming out on video in the U.S. in April. I
looked all over the site and didn't see a thing about this. Where is it?
Maybe you have 'intimate' sources at Sony that you aren't telling us about?

No, I don't really "speak" German all that well, but I was able to put
my four years of high school and two years of college German classes to
use to understand Chris' post just fine. In whatever language, it's
great to see how BT has reached all around the world.

Hallo Chris!
So genug geschwafelt.
Also bis bald ;-)
Reto

What? Is this an updated version of Celluloid Closet? I remember it being
shown on Cable here in the US, but I don't remember any scenes from BT being
shown...were a few other nice scenes from a few other movies tho :)

Simon was referring to the "trailer" or preview clip on the videotape.
Most rental videos have these previews, usually of upcoming videos but
also sometimes of movies coming to theaters.
I taped Celluloid Closet the night it was on HBO before it opened in
theaters. I showed it to my Media and Society class last spring and will
show it again this spring. But now, learning that there is a trailer for
BT on the commercial video, I may just have to rent it. :)

There are additions to the International Screenings and Releases pages, and

Whoops! I didn't mean to meslead anyone. Beautiful Thing was advertized as
coming soon to video among the trailers preceding the film. Celluloid Closet
is to old to feature BIT.

good day all-
I was just wondering what all of you on this wonderful list thought of
something I was curious about. I am working on a story for an honors
project at my college. I can't really tell about the story (stupid writer's
quirk) except that it is a coming out story. If anyone's interested, I'll
post it on my page when it's done. Anyway, I was wondering if it breaks any
sort of copyright laws or anything to include a scene in my story (in case
someone likes the story and wants to publish it <grin>) where my two main
characters go to a viewing of "Beautiful Thing." I just thought that so
many people loved BT and it was such an inspiration, that it would be kind
of a neat tribute to show those kinds of feelings in my story. So anyway, I
was just wondering if there was anything against that.
Thanks all

Hiya everyone!
In answer to Shaun's question: there's nothing to stop you from
referring to "Beautiful Thing" in your story, but if you quote directly
from the film, you need permission from the copyright holder. Presumably
the rights are owned by Channel Four, or perhaps the publishers Methuen.
I think that's the case anyway. So go for it Shaun!
I too have written a story about the effect of BT on a boy's life. It's
kind of wierd though, as it's also about fantasies. If anyone's
interested, it's on my web site at http://www.rupeworld.demon.co.uk
It's pretty short, so don't expect too much!
Bye!

Subject: My Beautiful Experience, and Movie grabs...

Hi all! I've been reading along and enjoying all the banter about
Beautiful Thing, a film which changed my life as well! It came into my
life about a week or so after the breakup of my three-year relationship,
and brought me some hope in an otherwise depressing period. I'll never
get over the incredible feelings I experienced that magical first time I
saw BT!!! I've been in love with it, the characters, and the actors
ever since.
Anyway, add me to the list of Americans who just CANNOT wait until the
NTSC video release on this side of the Atlantic! I was just wondering
if any of you lucky stiffs who have the video have done any decent video
grabs from some scenes other than the ones available at the websites?
Would you be willing to share? I've got the closeup of Ste and Jamie
dancing as my Windows wallpaper, but want more jpg's if anyone has them,
maybe of the *kiss*?
Thanks for the ongoing dialogue and fellow admiration of one wonderful
film!!!!
Sincerely,
Drake

Hi everyone,
While it looks like the server is behaving, I want to let you know that I
am aware of problems with the server. I'm trying to identify the cause and
let the authors know so the bugs can be fixed.
Another cause for you lossing access to the list is if mail from the list
to you is bounced back. I've had so many spoof subscriptions that as soon
as I get an email from a mailer deamon telling me an address is
uncontactable, I delete the address from the list to stop an endless loop
of "I don't know you" emails between the list server and the mail daemon.
If you think this happens to you at any time, email me personally and I'll
check your address is still in the list.
Andi and I will try to post at least one mail a day to the list so that
there is always some traffic - rather like a Ping I suppose :-)

I share some of this, although I wouldn't say "confused" so much as concerned.

<snip>
Beautiful Thing has come at a very important point in my life. I just
turned 49 in January; hey, I'm not exactly young any more. One of the
things I love about the film is it has brought me back in touch with
feelings I'd almost forgotten about. Suddenly I remember, oh, yeah, I felt
like that once upon a time. It was very powerful and very important. How
can I have that now in my life?
IMHO a relationship that is "fun, exciting and romantic" doesn't just
happen. Well, it may just happen in the beginning when you and your partner
are just getting to know one another. But then the relationship shifts.
Relationships are living things and, like all living things, they go
through cycles of development. Once you've passed through the innitial
"dating/honeymoon" phase, you have to see what the next step is going to
be. Further committment and intimacy? Maybe. Maybe not. But to keep the
"fun, excitement and romance" alive, well, that takes work -- co-operation
-- on everyone's part. It has to be CREATED.
>All that said, I find myself still coming back to this movie. And now
>there's this group of us all responding to it. Has anybody else had an
>experience like this?
You BET! I love Davie and we've been together for seven years. Yet, like
you, this movie reminded me of something I'm not getting that I want. How
to get it, that's the question? Does it mean working it out within the
relationship I have, or does it mean letting go of that and oppening myself
to the possibility of finding something more fitting for who I am now?
These are hard questions that have to be lived through. No amount of
talking will save us from the experinece of living through these dificult
choices.
>God, I can just picture it now: me, single, going to "Beautiful Thing"
>conventions, a bunch of Klingons gathered just down the hall.
I don't think THAT's going to happne. BUT, if people are interested we can
create something else, something more . . . BEAUTIFUL! :-)

I've been thinking about gifts for Davie and my frineds for Valentines.
I wish there were more BT Merchandise more readily available; they'd
rank high on my list. I've also seen some other things I'll share with
you. If YOU have some ideas, why not share them with us?

Here's my list:

COUPLES, by John Gettings, University Press of New England, 1996, ISBN:
0-87451-791-5 This is a photographic essay of gay and lesbian couples
of all ages. I didn't read much of the text but it was interesting to
look at these different, extra-yet-ordinary folks.

THE GAY GUYS GUIDE TO LOVE: The Dos Don'ts and Definite Maybes of
Dating and Mating, by Ken Haner. (I may not have the last name right, I
can't read my hand writing). Crown Trade Paperbacks. (Sorry, forgot to
get the ISBN on this one)
This book consists of a list of several hundred fun things you can do
to get and/or keep romance in your life. Just flipping through it I got
some neat ideas to spring on Davie. Maybe I should get him this book
for Valentines? Yep.

RECENT ISSUE OR SUBSCRIPTION TO XY MAGAZINE: Hey, I know I'm plugging
these folks but, honest, its only because I think they're headed in the
right direction. I've been reading their February/March "Love" issue
and it is the best yet. Yeah, yeah, there are lots of cute young things
in various stages of undress (so, what's wrong with that?!); but there
are also some interesting and provocative articles. Here's a highly
shortened excerpt from Peter Ian Cummings' (the publisher) opening
statement for this issue:

<paraindent><param>right,left</param>"I've been having some trouble
finding a boyfriend. I wonder why...[so do I, he's truly cute--MW]

"The problem is, simply, that there isn't enough emphasis on love in
the gay community: we're all so busy dancing and sending email (and
getting off) that we, as a community, have pushed love to the bottom of
our priority list.

"This is a terrible conclusion to reach, for what is the point of being
gay without love?...

"Look, the reason I go to clubs and hang out on the Internet is because
I am looking for love. My main motivation is *love*, and it isn't
dancing of listening to hip-hop or even sex (though I dance and have
sex a lot more than I find love)...

"We need new and creative solutions to this love-deficit...looking for
closeness requires admitting that it's missing, and that we want it...

"Look I don't have the answers. I don't know how to change the gay
scene, or exactly how to make people act honestly or caringly on the
gay Internet... But I figure if all of you think about the points I've
mentioned, somebody might be spurred...into making some improvements we
can all benefit from."
</paraindent>
Hey, I think we should invite Ian to join our BT list, what do you
think?

Much Love to all,

Mike

I can't imagine that this would break any copy right laws. I'd be very
interested to read your story when its complete.
Thanks,
Mike

Well here I go!
As a few guys on the list have been putting stories up on
the web, I thought that I might as well jump on the
bandwagon. I've be threatening to put a story that I've
been writing on the web for a few months now, it's only in
rought draft, there are typos and the like all over it, but
it's quite good, from what I have been told by the few who
have read it.
There is a link from the url below, the FTP links on the
page don't work, so you'll have to use your browser to pull
it in and read. It's quite long so unless you get free web
access, I recommend that you pull it in and save it to
file, for further perusal. Alternatively you can mail me
and I can forward you a copy either in .doc (MS Word) or
txt format.
Either way, enjoy it, as I enjoy writing it still. Any bits
you have suggestions on improving or expanding drop me a
line to my personal email, (not the list!) as constructive
critism is greatefully received! :-)

Heyas all!
Just a quick note to say I've spent the evening scouring the web for BT-
related MIDI files... and I haven't come up with much :o(
All that I found was an extremely dodgy version of "Dream a Little Dream
of Me", which sounds pretty appalling through my FM soundcard.
Nevertheless, I've put it in the "jukebox" on my web site just in case
anyone's interested. If somebody with a Wavetable soundcard has a listen
to it, could you let me know how it sounds? Also, if anyone has any MIDI
files of Mama Cass songs, I'd love to hear them!
See yas!

Subject: Boy friend in hospital

Hi BT friends:
My boy friend, Davie (David ) was hospitalized last night after being
taken to the emergency room. He has been disoriented and feverish. They've
run tests but I do not know the results as of this time. I do know the
blood tests were "negative."
I'm feeling okay. Alarmed, of course, but I find keeping busy with my work
helps. I will be seeing Davie later this evening and hopefully will find
out more from the Dr.s at that time. Davie and I have been lovers for seven
years and I'm also friends with his brother, who is helping me monitor this
situation. (I also receive considerable support from our many friends.)
Life is real, folks. Sometimes it is overwhelmingly so. One of the things I
love about Beautiful Thing is that the two characters are PRESENT for one
another. Life was not perfect, but at least they had each other. This, to
me, is the core of this movie and what speaks to our depths. That they are
gay characters, of course, is important to US.
The final scene with Jamie and Ste dancing in the plaza with the rest of
the world watching on with its opinions and prejudices is an archtype. A
symbol with many many levels of meaning to be felt. Within each of us there
is a place where we can go, a place where we are solid and real and whole
for ourselves and one another, despite all the chaos that surrounds us and
permeates our lives from day to day. In that place, everything is a
Beautiful Thing.
Dance with me?

Much love to you all,
Mike

Dearest Mike,
thank you for your beautiful e-mail you've sent to all of us. It touched
me deeply and I hope your boyfriend will be soon better. I'm thinking
here in Switzerland of you two.
Take care! With all my love,

Chris
