Andi,
A t-shirt with Jamie and Ste kissing in the woods would be a
big seller I'm sure. Anything else -- posters, etc. -- with that
image.
Thanks.

- Let's not forget the HUGE potential market here in the U.S. when this
- thing finally hits video stores. Maybe there is a way you can get lists of
- gay-owned and operated video stores here in the U.S. and contact some of
- them about carrying some of the merchandise in conjunction with the release

- And I'll second David's idea about a t-shirt with the image of
- Jamie and Ste kissing in the woods. I think that could sell real well, and
- perhaps a coffee mug with that picture on it as well.

- Also, t-shirts. Here in the sunny southland, where it's already

- "The Toilers and the Wayfarers," a wonderful film portraying two teenage
- boys growing up in southern Minnesota who gradually discover each other
- and flee to Minneapolis, is showing this weekend for three days only at
- the Castro Theater. Showtimes are 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 p.m. all three days;
- the film itself is only 75 minutes. It is in black and white, and much
- of it is in German with English subtitles, even though it's an American-

- I and various other people I know will be attending the film.
- If you live in the San Francisco bay area you have an absolute

- Subject: A story by David Brown
-
- Dear Friends,
-
- It has now been almost a month since David's death. I appreciate the
- condolences and sympathy expressed by many of you. The reality of
- David's passing is slowly sinking in and I am left with this intangible
- hole in my life where David once lived. His absence follows me like a
- shadow always just beyond my sight.
-
- This evening I was going through some of David's papers. For those of
- you who don't know, David had a lot of papers. Most of them are stuffed
- in the three large mineral specimen cabinets he used as flat files for
- everything from his drawings to his underwear. After the first time, I
- steadfastly refused to help David move these monstrosities. They're
- solid wood, cumbersome and each weigh several hundred pounds -- even
- with the drawers removed.
-
- But David has many other, even more romantic cubby holes. One of them I
- opened this evening. It is a small, attractive wooden box inlaid with
- with an Indian design executed in tiny geometric pieces of wood, shell
- and metal. It sits on a mirrored wooden mantel which -- since David's
- loft has no fire place -- hangs on the wall in his "music room." To
- catch the humor of this you need to know that David's loft mo more has
- "rooms" than it does a "fire place". It is divided by wheeled
- partitians and the most improbable furnishings.
-
- This small box was filled -- "crammed" is the right word -- with a
- watch, several envelopes containing invoices, deposit receipts from the
- bank, another watch, two small batteries, several Chinese fortunes
- remarkable only by their triteness, two small foreign coins with ships
- on them and a tightly folded clutch of paper -- several sheets of
- Xeroxed Discovery retreat evaluation forms torn in half across the
- middle and written upon on the back. ("Discovery" is a non profit
- organization David and I belong to that sponsors retreats and
- community building for gay men.)
-
- These half sheets of paper were rolled tightly together and flattened
- -- as if stuck in a back pocket and sat on for hours -- perhaps days.
- Unrolling them has proven challenging. Even after repeated backroleings
- and reverse creasings they want to curl up on themselves and hide.
-
- On them I found the following story written in David's hand:
-
- -------------------------------------------------------------
- "At a retreat a few years back, Sola, the caretarker, had a far off,
- worried look. The animals, particularly the horses, were restless and
- about them was a rank and nervous smell. A white horse which had called
- this place home for many years was dying.
-
- (1)
-
- -------------------------------------------------------------
-
- "All through that Retreat's last evening, even through the "No Talent
- Show," I thought of Sola and of the dying horse and the other animals.
- --And how the life and death of this place intersects from time to time
- with the life and death of our community -- and how now we were here
- rejoicing, while Sola and the animals held a death watch.
-
- (2)
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------
-
- "The next morning I woke up early, in time to watch the sun come up
- over the lake. Mist hung all around. The peace of the place bordered on
- exhaustion. I knew the horse had died.
-
- (3)
-
- -------------------------------------------------------------
-
- "Then floating through the mist came all the other horses. Sola had let
- them out to run out their tension. Their hooves seemed not to touch the
- ground.
-
- (4)
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------
-
- "I was joined by a man whom I'd noticed but hadn't got to know yet.
- When the horses had passed he came close to me and said, "Good luck in
- your quest for beauty." He smiled at my surprise and then continued his
- walk.
-
- (5)
-
- -------------------------------------------------------------
-
- "Sola has since joined the white horse. In fact, there are no more
- horses here. In our Community there are new faces and some faces that
- we'll miss. The man who saw the horses with me hasn't been seen around
- Discovery for a couple of years now.
-
- (6)
-
- -------------------------------------------------------------
-
- "But I'll never forget the thoughts that focused for me as I watched
- that man walk down the path. I barely knew him yet he'd fundamentally
- understood and affirmed me. For a brief moment we were members of the
- same family. "Yes," I thought, "These people are my family and this
- place is my home."
-
- (not numbered)
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------
- In the very center of this wad of papers was one more Chinese fortune
- that read:
-
-
- "You will soon have an opportunity
- to make a change to your advantage."
-
-
-
- God Blessed You, David
-
- Yours,
-

- Hello all!
- Hey Mike!
- Thanks for the info. I live in Santa Cruz so I'll make sure to make it.
- (For those outside of California, Santa Cruz is a coastal town, south of
- San Francisco by about an hour and a half drive.) I missed the showing
- down here in the South Bay of that film, "Boy's Life 2"-the anthology of
- four shorts, so I'm in the nindset to catch one of thes damn films.
- This post maybe should have been on the gay-films list that Dave started
- but my guess is that not very many have signed up on that yet.
- Though speaking of BT, I got my copies of the video and cd in the mail
- from Virgin last Tuesday. First off, it's a bitch trying to track down a
- PAL vcr but I'm managing. There is an old one here at work that we use
- for testing and I've managed to use that.m I know I could have waited for
- the US NTSC release but who knows when that we'll be. I'll dead and wormy
- by then!
- I'm glad that they decided to produce the video in letterbox
- format--much nicer. I was kinda hoping that there would be some cool
- previews at the start--something that would give me a peak at some
- overseas films that I might have missed out on but nada...
- Ok, now I see what you guys over in England were saying about the dorky
- cover art. What the hell were they thinking with that picture? And
- what's up with the clothes they stuck Jamie and Ste in? And they don't
- really look like they do in the film! [ Bitch, bitch, bitch :) ]
- Who was in charge of marketing the picture? Bless `em but they're daft.
- I still can't listen to the cd without getting all emotional. I have to
- get up and walk around for awhile. My cubemates here at work must think
- I'm a bit off.
- Alright, nuff said.
- late,
- clem
-
- PS: Two London questions: What's the weather today like there today?
- Where is the town (?) of Uxbridge? (My co.
- Apple has a place there)

- Yet again I have to report on problems!
- The double-emails were sent out by the server while Andi and I were at friends for
dinner last evening. I'm not entirely clear why it happened, but I think it might have
been caused by a bad email address in the list causing a resend to the entire subscriber
list.
- As well as the mail server having the wrong domain for a time, it seems that last
weekend my reworking of the BT web site using MS FrontPage 97's Verify/Edit Links provoked
a bug in that product which, instead of inserting URLs of images and web pages which are
relative to the site root, inserted absolute paths with our intranet address
(gateway.orlando...), which means many links and graphics are broken.
- We can't tell here because the intranet server delivers the files to us. The real bitch
of this is FrontPage Explorer won't search/replace URLs so I have to search through 53
pages and alter every bad link manually!
- On the positive side I'm creating a BT crossword for the site, and we're about to launch
a competition to win goodies of all sorts. This is leading to our launch of the
merchandising in the near future - providing our negotiations with Film Four are completed
satisfactorily.
- This weekend I hope to add a photo and image gallery to the site, and Andi will be
completing the massive job of manually creating the February guestbook entries. As most of
you will know by now, I switched it to an automatic system at the beginning of February.
- Regards, Davie.

- Well, I *think* I fixed the web site by working through to 6am this morning. I found a
useful little application at www.windows95.com called Search and Replace that scans files
and does what it says.
- As best as I can I've check the site and it seems okay, but if any of you know different
let me know.
- Exhaustedly yours,
- Davie.

- We appreciate your work, despite our suggestions for "punishment."
- Actually, you don't need to be forced to watch "Barney" over the next
- weeks, as I understand y'all are having elections and you'll be forced to
- watch all sorts of nasty political ads. We went through that last fall
- here and I wouldn't wish it upon anyone.

- Man, you're not kidding! Political ads and debate are FAR nastier than
- anything at a video store, even Barney!

- David and Andi:
-
- I had an idea about how to get the word out about BT merchandise
- (assuming there will be any). My boyfriend just bought a copy of the movie
- Jeffrey on video. Inside the case of the videotape was a little color
- brochure for Jeffrey merchandise (t-shirts, coffee mugs and hats). If you
- could get information like this inside the video of Beautiful Thing when
- it's released in the U.S. you could do bang up business. As far as I could
- tell the company offering the merchandise was in no way affiliated with the
- studio who released Jeffrey on video but I'm sure they came to some kind of
- mutually beneficial agreement. What do you think?
