Hi Chris. I have to admit I didn't read anything at all into the
look Sandra gives Louise then.
Cheers,
Mark
I don't really think Ste is doing too much in the way of trying to
impress Jamie on the balcony, but Jamie sure is reacting like he's in
love. He jump all over his mom when she's making fat jokes about Mama
Cass, but as soon as Ste cracks one, he's all smiles.
Secondly, something I've been wondering about since I first saw the
movie: what is that look Sandra gives Louise on their way home from work
as Louise walks away? Any thoughts

Yo everybody - this is my first contribution to debate on Beautiful
Thing, so be gentle with me!
Anyway, I think the kiss is a "beautiful thing", but what makes it for
me is when the two of them part for a moment and Ste smiles. What's
in that smile? Probably a mixture of things - love at last, the
realisation that he CAN show affection for another man without being
ridiculed - and just sheer joy!
Whatever it is, though, I just melt every time I see that smile!
Cheers,
Mark

Not to be a real-sh*t,
but I have to admit, after seeing the movie that night, I kept
remembering how everyone was slobbering over the kiss and how beautiful
it was - I got the impression that "everyone" thought it was the
"perfect kiss", and it wasn't - as you say, it's got rhythm, it's does
move - it is very "real" in the sense that NOTHING is perfect, but that
doesn't mean we can't try to attain perfection, right?
Well, my whole point in writing, as I said was to get others to think
about that too - too many times I have gone back and thought, "God, if I
had only done that differently..." whereas if someone had been observing
me from an objective point of view, they may have considered my actions
(words, etc) "poetry in motion"...or not!?! But the point I am trying to
make is that no matter what we each may think about a certain thing, we
can choose to see it positively or negatively, in a dream or in reality
- well, I guess you said it best: "Well, my reaction was unexpected to
say the least." Sorry if this sounds very confusing (long story), but I
have gotten back alot of responses (like I thought) and most have them
have encouraged me...no matter how bad or good something LOOKS like, it
can still be a Beautiful Thing.

Jim,
I laughed/chuckled when I heard this music the first time, too. It
seemed so misplaced; so inappropriate, so silly. I think it's because we're
blinded by having seen The Sound of Music and do associate it with the
"squeeky clean" "boy-gets-girl image that movie portrays.
However, now that I have been able to listen to the words over and
over on my cassette recording of BT, I can see how it fits. Listen to the
words and imagine Jamie singing these words on the inside. (I have written
the words down to the three "main" songs, so I'll have to do the same for
Sixteen.) Singing to Ste that he's going to show him the "way." To
paraphrase: Ste, you are 16 going on 17 and don't know anything, but I am
17 going on 18 and I am going to protect you, going to show how to be loved.
The irony of the words especially fit here, because Jamie may be studying
the Gay Times magazine and have a leg up on Ste about gay issues, but Ste
isn't that far behind him and will catch up quick, i.e., pressing Jamie
against the tree in Abbey Wood to "snog the golly" of him.

I always wondered about her look at Louise too. After that scene and then
with her dancing with Leah at the end, I was a bit confused. I wondered
if she too might have had feelings for other women, but it didn't seem to
fit her so I really didn't think her character was gay. The explanations
given really do make since. She's almost admiring Louise's fantasy and
imagination. It's almost like a look of "That's a nice dream Louise, but
it will never happen. I won't tell you that, but that's what I'm
thinking" type of look.
As for the music, I too love '16 going on 17' even though <hold your

earlier, I'm not your "typical" queer:) Davie: can I sing it too you;-)

I always though that Ste had a look of embarassment on his face in the

become embarrassed when it turns on Jamie. I think he feels like he has to
go along, that it's really no big deal, but that he's also embarrassed for
Jamie. After all, they live next door and are clearly friends at home, at

I'd been wondering about that look myself. She also does kind of like a
double take after dismissing Tony (as if she may have some second
thoughts). I assumed that the first look had to do with what she would do
if she got the pub licence.
Question for all - on the back of the box that the video came in
the main characters ( Gangels, Ste, Tony, and Leah) are seated on a bench
in what looks like a courtyard ( I also imagined it was a bus stop). Ste
and Jamie are both wearing red shirts (the same ones they are wearing on
the front of the box; Ste has his arm around Jamie and their backs are to
the viewer). Were either of these stills in the movie? If not, I have a
new theory. If so - not worth discussing.
Thanks.

I have to share with you a little story relating to this.
Sixteen Going On Seventeen really gets to me as a song. But by far the best
version I've ever heard was two weeks ago when I visited Gavin in
Cambridge, before he returned to Singapore for the summer.
He was sat at the desk typing to other BTers on IRC, I was stood behind him
with my hands on his shoulders. He sang the song to me, and oh!, in such a
sweet voice that it brought tears to my eyes.
His is the performance I shall always think of when this song is mentioned
in the future.
Davie.

Subject: Eastenders Tony & Simon
Just got to view last night the videotape of last Sunday evening's showing
on WHYY here in Philadelphia of the Eastenders episode where Tony (played
by Mark Homer), Ted's son, has his first full up speaking parts in several
scenes, one of which includes Simon's sister. For those in the UK this is
well in the past. I've been long anticipating getting to these episodes
from the Gay Times articles, etc. From what I've been able to gleen from
various articles, Tony, very straight, butch, working class knock about
teenager, initially attracted to Simon's sister, finds himself attracted to
and eventually falls in love with Simon, a more typical gay teenager, much
to the confusion - consternation of Albert Square and the UK press. The
Public Broadcasting Station in the Allentown area is a couple of months
behind in episodes, all originally broadcast in the UK beginning in 1995.
While each of the PBS station in the US broadcast Eastenders to their own
schedule, they are somewhat in sync in their considerable delay from the
UK. So, for all those gay Anglophiles and BT fans here in the US, be on
the alert, Eastenders is going to be loads of fun and talked a lot about in
certain gay circles.
- Harry
PS:
I've been faithfully checking in on the BT Newsgroup every weekday and have
seen only 7 articles in the last 2 weeks, 3 of which I posted myself. Is
there lots of traffic and Compuserve not carrying most of it or is there
very little traffic? Am I doing something wrong?

All through the film, it is Ste's _expressions_ rather than his words
that convey so much of the changes he is going through. There's the
look at the lake when retrieving the ball, then the look of grave
concern when he realizes Jamie has just seen his bruises. There's
the look before he asks Jamie if he always wears glasses. The look
when he says he hasn't given thought to whether he fancies a girl.
The look at the party toward Jamie, etc., etc.
And, of course, that look between kisses by the tree. It's a joyous
look, not just a smile, but a look of celebration and sheer
happiness.
I've read both scripts and Ste has relatively few lines, but he says
so much without words.

If you noticed in the bar scene, Ste intently stares at the two guys kissing.
And, if you notice, when Ste and Jamie kiss, it is similiar to the two guys.
I think that the lack of passion that is percieved by some, is just
inexperience. Prior to the pub, both basically admitted that they had not
kissed anyone. Now whether they kissed more than the short peck on the lips
the first time that 'they were together' is still up for debate. However, I
personally think that the kiss is very passionite yet a kiss of the
inexperienced which adds to the innocents of their love which draws me to
this film.

Few if any of the promotional shots I've seen were actual out takes from
the film. I suspect that's because the photographers had to set up for the
still shots -- lighting, film, that sort of thing.

In the screenplay, Ste actually winks at Jamie prior to the ball going in the

Actually, what Steīs wearing is the Arsenalīs shirt (a football team). Also,
his room is decorated with Arsenalīs memorabilia (poster, and even his
bedspread reads "Arsenal Football Club"). Every football team (Spanish ones
too) has sponsors and they wear their names in their shirts. Usually thereīs
one sponsor for every season and in this case, Arsenalīs sponsor was JVC.
Off topic now, I should tell you that my beloved Real Madrid won the Spanish
football league (maybe some of you already know). Gee, Iīm happy, fellas!
Take care.

I started watching BT again today. I bought some new stereo speakers
(Bose 201s) and wanted to see if I heard anything more. I did - a
lot of interesting background and ambient sounds.
BUT..I also noticed more. Ste steals a glance at Jamie in the very
first scene.

It's JVC - the electronics company. I've noticed that most soccer
(excuse me, football) jerseys have corporate advertising on them.

I thought it might be useful if I give you a list of all the contributors I
can see to the news group. If you have posted to the group but don't see
your name on this list it means that the news-server (or group of) that you
are connected to is not making the link to the rest of the world.
Talk to your news service and ask them to sort it out!
This list is from 2nd July back to the 18th June.

Thirty is old?????????????
When did it become a tacky gay stereotypical refrain to refer to any
guy under thirty as "old"?? (even one's own self!)
I find that very disturbing!!!
You are NOT old!!! (not there 's anything wrong with being old!!
You're just NOT, that's all)

Good - then I can have my happy ending - Tony is obviously in the picture
at the back of the video, the boys are together and happy, even Leah is
part of the crew (we know that this action has to take place after the Ste-
Jamie dance scene because as I mentioned Ste's arm in around Jamie on the
bench which is in a very public place). My "theory" is that someone
somewhere wanted all the viewers to be happy - including the ones rooting
for Tony and Leah. Now a NEW QUESTION. I was just wondering if the copy
of the screenplay that we have in the states is the original screenplay.
I ask this because in my copy of the screenplay from Trainspotting there
are many scenes that were ultimately taken out of the movie. These scenes
are noted as such (i.e., "cut from the movie"). Anyone have a screenplay
of BT that includes such scenes? If so, what were they (they might also
have been bits of dialogue).

Yeah, well, wait till your 49, like me. Imagine 50. Go ahead. Try it. I
dare ya.
As I've said before, the WEIRD thing is, I don't "feel" (emotionally) a day
over, oh, 30 - 35. (35 may, seem 'old' to many of you, to me it certainly
does not.) Physically, now that's another thing...aches and pains and shit.
Body's are wave forms, guys, they truly are: Temporary manifestatsions of a
peculiar 4/5 dimensional (time/'timeless') consciousness cast into a 3/4
dimensional (space/time) world.
Oops. This doesn't have ANYTHING to do with BT or First time feeling
Love...or does it?
Okay, here goes: Love is a qualitative property of 4/5 consciousness. When
it gets projected into 3/4 space time it manifests as fragmented into the
various properties associated with our 3/4 bodies: physical desire,
emotional longing, and mental confusion. (That last is a bit of a cosmic
joke perhaps, but varifiable nontheless.)
Okay enough proFUNdities for one Independence Day.
HOPE EVERYONE IN THE UK HAS A GOOD PRIDE DAY!

Please do not share this URL with
