Well...the problem there is that, unfortunately, many of the list regulars
just can't access alt.movies.beautiful-thing. Often their ISP or
news-feeds don't carry it...it's unfortunate, cause it would be more
appropriate, but there you have it...which has meant that even those of us
who do get it don't tend to post there much, becausewe know that a great
deal of the audience can't read it.
Hopefully, one of these days, things'll change, but until then we'll just
have to make do with this!
Enjoy!

Thanks all for clarifying that "wednesday" question for me. It'll probably
be so clear to me when I go and see it again (yes folks, I'm going to watch
it *again*!) ;) that I'll feel stupid that I didn't get it the very first
time around!
Just a note about the mailing list.
I *much* prefer the mailing list (and I know of at *least* one other
subscriber that does, too), because of the spastic news server that I have
here in S.A. It's not good for coherent conversation.... There are
*still* some messages that I *know* that I haven't received yet, and the
ones I *do* receive are out of order....
"off the deep end" - Join the club! :)) I've been wondering if I'm alone
down here!! ;)
If there were any news that I could give about BT, I would, but there isn't
much to tell, from here in South Africa... Umm. Actually there is.. But
it's very sad...
The Beautiful Thing screening goes off circuit tonight (Thursday August 14
1997) in South Africa, after showing since July 3 (I think). What a sad
event.... Now I *really* have to get that video !!!!
Of course, I've booked to go see the movie tonight (for the last time,
sob!). I've already bribed the theatre manager to give me the three BT
posters that are hanging on the displays..... He'll rue the day if he
doesn't..... ;)

It must be something about the southern hemisphere, because I'm sure I
don't get some news postings here in Australia (not that there's alot going
on in the newsgroup these days). I'd often find reply's to postings when I
had never seen the original.

Ah, cherish the moment. BTW, BT posters are very rare. I've tried several
movie poster merchants on the net and no-one has it.

Subject: A way to deal with dialogue problems
I've been doing a major "makeover" of my office and I've added a new TV
and VCR (since I teach communications, my office is full of various
videotapes and there's never a convenient way to check out what's on
them that I want to use in class.)
Anyhow, while working on the office today, I brought in BT to play while
I work. The new TV has (as all TVs of the past five years or so are
required to have) closed captioning and - guess what? - BT is
closed-captioned!
I have both the play and movie scripts, but the closed captioning even
included the radio announcer in the background (in the scene where Ste
is trying to clean off Trevor's shoes.)
If any of you have a late model TV, try turning on the closed captioning
while you watch the video.

Due to popular demand, Beautiful Thing has been extended for another week!!
A *whole* week more for people to be touched by it!! Yay!!
Are there any other countries where BT is showing at the cinemas? I'm
curious, because I think that we are probably one of the last countries that

Subject: Sandra's break up
Since we are using the mail list rather than the discussion site, I want
to post this question. I just looked at the video of the film again. I
am puzzled about why Sandra breaks up with her boyfriend at the end. Is
there anything in the play that better explains this break up? It seems
very abupt, and what is even more confusing is his apparent lack of real
upset over the end of the relationship. Is Sandra gay? There seems to be
some sort of hint about that -- she's going out with the girls, she has
her girlfriend in the apartment when she breaks up with the boyfriend.
Any comments or explanations??? MATT

Perhaps they just realised they weren't right together - it has been known
for amicable break-ups to occur (or so I believe - have yet to experience
this phenomenon first hand :-( ). Also, he's hardly the type to get upset
about anything much - or at least, to show it.

Plenty of women go out on a "girls' night out", just as plenty of blokes go
out on a "lads' night out". It doesn't imply anything. FWIW, I don't think
Sandra is gay - but she's the sort of person who, if she found that she was
being attracted to a member of the same sex, wouldn't rule a relationship
out purely on that basis alone.

I got a question maybe someone could answer, especially someone with

Well, how about them getting in touch with you? :-)
The Dutch BT fanclub was 'created' about a month ago, and is not completely
'up and running' yet, so to speak. But that will change in the next couple of
weeks. It's just that setting up a fanclub (doing it the right way) is kinda
taking up a lot of our spare time.
We set out to be a Dutch fanclub, but since more than 25% of our members are
not Dutch you could say we are well on our way to become an international
fanclub.
As far as the e-mail list is concerned, there have not been that many
postings to it, mainly because we are currently focussing on the website, but
you already can connect to it, and postings are possible, so if you want
details, just visit the website.

We are not aware of the existance of any other fanclubs, but if anyone knows
something about any other real fanclubs, we'd sure would like to know...

She says, "Nolene busy tonight, eh?" She's referring to her
conversation with Ste about his being in love, when he says, "no," and
she thinks it's the name of his girlfriend.

The more I watch BT (and, yes, I can now even watch in my office while i
clean it up <G>), the more I wonder if this scene isn't a moment when
Sandra begins to suspect something.
She's already been told Ste's in love, Ste has been quite embarrassed
about it, he hasn't been around to see Jamie for a while and suddenly he
shows up at night (late apparently) with a package and wants to see
Jamie.
Any thoughts?

Hi Gary!
Glad to be able to say I got my video copy back recently, so I can
see BT after a gap of about one month. One LONG month!
Re: Sandra's suspicion originating on the night Ste shows up at her
door, "Nolene-less", as it were, one of my co-workers offered a thought
on this. As she *is* a mom (a role I daresay many of us on this list
are not all that familiar with!), her observations about Sandra carried
some weight with me. She felt that Sandra already had a suspicion Jamie
might be gay (the "a mother always knows" thing, but based on what the
movie conveyed to her, not just a general belief in maternal wisdom!)
About this scene, her idea was that perhaps Sandra both found out in her
look that there was no "Nolene" at all, and at the same time was
checking to see if anyone might "catch" Ste coming in to her flat;
Sandra may've suspected the meeting between Ste and Jamie (at that hour)
was more than just one between "mates".
I think Sandra's knowledge of her son makes it plausible that she
had, at the least, some vague idea of the possibility that Jamie was
gay. For the reasons you mentioned, this nocturnal rendezvous between
the boys could have served as a catalyst for her suspicions, IMO.
Kent
glad to be on this list!

That is a very interesting thought, one which I hadn't honestly thought of,
but makes a lot of sense. That *would* explain her peering out the door
after letting Ste in (which I found strange, but attributed it to something
like crime or something) a lot better!
And thank you Andre, for that info about the NL BT-Fan club!
I've asked this before, but I've heard that there is an English BT-Fan club
as well (it was mentioned in one of the reviews of Beautiful Thing in a
local paper). Does anyone know anything about this??

Early in the film (scene 2 I think) Sandra comes home to find Jamie
watching videos of old films. I've heard some people say that being a
connoisseur of Hollywood classics is a "gay stereotype' trait (for some
reason it doesn't apply to me!). Soon after, she is then seen throwing out
toys and stuff she apparently had saved for Jamie's kids. I'd say Sandra
had a subconscious suspicion that Jamie was gay all along.

The more I think about it, the more likely it seems.
After all, consider Jamie's room. Consider Ste's room. Ste even has
bedding from his favorite team. Jamie has pictures of Lucille Ball,
some colored lighting and lots of little "frills" that are not typical
of a boy's room. This had to have been decorated over time and Sandra
had to wonder where the football posters and such were.
And what is Jamie reading that first night with Ste: "Hello," a
magazine he says is his mother's and he's reading personality gossip
about a soap opera star.
Again, not all of us conform to these stereotypes. (My bedroom had
posters of cars and trains <G>), but there seem to be plenty of signs
for Sandra to become suspicious.

Yup, I sure have had many thoughts about this..
Especially when Ste gets indoors and Sandra closes the door. Just before she does so,
she steps outside for a sec to check if anyone has seen Ste enter...

(Gary, Jeff, Sandra) It cleared it up. I have the stageplay, but have been

after 6 weeks of it being "on order" they told me it was unavailable.
Does anyone else know of a place that has it in stock? (Preferably in the

And if anyone is wondering about my comment about the list being quiet

Oh, and to whoever was looking for the movie poster of BT, I got mine at

it is instock according to their web page. They are located in Canada.

HI,
I would be very surprised if the Beautiful Thing screenplay was out of
stock at A Different Light, as they had about 8 copies just two weeks ago.
Try calling the New York store directly. If that fails....
The Drama Book Shop in New York carries the play and screenplay, and if
they are out of it, they can order it. And of course, you can order it
directly from the UK (details on davies website). Also, I have seen the
play at Barnes & Noble, so you could check there, too.
The reason it's fairly difficult to find in the US is that it's a UK import
(not published in the US) and many bookstores do not carry imports.

I ordered my copies from amazon.com online. The stage play was going
into a second printing and amazon.com has an option to hold your entire
order until it's complete. As a result, it took about eight weeks
before I got them both, but would have taken much less time for the

Good prices too, even though they were import items.

I´m ashamed!! I had promised myself I would resuscitate the list and Andy
just went ahead of me!!! I´m guilty!!! D*** my laziness!!!
Anyway, Andy´s asked a very good question.
According to the stageplay, Ste never takes drugs because he respects
himself too much, on his own words. Also, there´s no reference that the
Pierces deal drugs at all.
The movie´s very different. Trevor´s a drug dealer, there´s no mistake about
that, and judging from what Ste does at the party, he´s too.
As for if Ste´s ever consumed any ecstasy pills, my opinion is that maybe he
has. Perhaps once or twice, not more. Ste´s a sporty lad, very healthy and
he cares about his diet: "Cheese and salad, bang on food".
At the party, when Jamie goes out to the terrace to talk to him, Ste throws
a pill to the pond. He was considering taking it but in seeing Jamie, he
decides it´s not worth it and he throws it away. (Another example of Jamie´s
good influence over him.)
My guess is that the Pierces deal drugs as an easy way to earn some extra money.

Take care.

Sandra.

P.S. I promise to write more often (cross my heart!!)
Shame, shame, shame on me!!!

LOL!
Hope you had one there for me, Andy! Although BT is *still* showing at
theatres here in sunny South Africa (despite my constant announcements of
it's ever-feared demise, it's now sharing a theatre with another movie,
allowing more lucky people to be touched by the BT experience), I haven't
been able to go see it myself, due to a bit of an operation that I've had!
Anyway!
>From what I've surmised (and the movie doesn't really give us much to go
on), is that Ste was selling his brother's E's. Maybe with a bit higher
profit margin ;) Dunno whether it's done with his brother's knowledge,
though. Nowhere (during the movie) is it said that Ste actually takes them
himself, but twice we are told that he is known for having stock (once we
*see* it sold, and the other where Leah asks for one). Maybe our Text
boffins out there (the ones with either or both of the scripts) can help us
out...?
It has been getting eerily quiet here, hasn't it?
BTW, I like the fact that the "temporary" has now been removed from our
little footer, don't you?
Hal
PS Hope the flu clears up quickly!! :)

Hi all!
Sandra, thanks for pointing out one of the many small points I still
overlook in my viewing of BT (concerning Ste's tossing the pill, and the
surmised reason why). I really gotta get around to reading my copy of
the screenplay! My guess is that Ste is not so likely to be a "user"
himself (despite having so much at home he could well wish to "escape"
from!); I wonder if Trevor is aware some of his goods are going through
a subsidiary "salesman". Ste doesn't seem to be making much money at
it-- of course, deep-sixing the merchandise tends to cut down on the ol'
profit margin!

According to the director's notes in the screenplay, when Ste is on the
patio alone before Jamie finds him, we discover:
"STE stands in the back patio away from the house, holding a tablet of
Ecstacy in his hand. He is wondering whether to take it or not. ... The back
door opens and JAMIE comes out holding a drink. Ste looks round. They stare
at each other. STE looks at the E. ... STE takes one last look at the E,
then throws it into the fish pond. Jamie searches for the words. They both
find this next bit quite difficult."
Doesn't answer the question of whether Ste is a user, but certainly leaves
to door open to it. We'd all like to think he wouldn't, but... Perhaps he
forgoes the E because he doesn't need it now that Jamie is there? A strange
romantic notion.
As for Stumpy, it's all interpretation. I used to think it was his
"manhood," but was set "straight" in a debate back in April that seemed to
settle that it is his height. Go figure. He's taller than Ste, so why would
it be?
Now, would anyone want to discuss the fact that the Gangels' flat number is
269? Davie has always said there was no pun intended. But visitors to
Thamesmead point out that the flat numbers were changed for the movie, maybe
for privacy of the true occupants... or was it to be an inside joke?
Just some thoughts.
Jeff

Oh dear it has. Now where could it have gone to? If I find it I'll
put it back, but I'm unlikely to find anything on this desk ;-)
On a more serious note, I don't think the other list is going to be
back up for a while. So I thought, what the h***, I'll call this The
Beautiful Thing Mailing List =)
Anyway, I'd better be off. I think I've just been offered a place at
uni for this year.

Hi all, Andy here again. This is really weird, replying to my own posting.
I was expecting the worst, being bombarded with hate mail for soiling such
a lovely group with drunkenness. As it turned out you're all kind-hearted.
Thanks :)

Nope! It didn't work. I still feel like crap but trying to make the most of it.

Thanks for the responses to this question. The ecstacy issue had always
bugged me from the first time I saw BT.

To me Ste doesn't seem to be the type of person who would take drugs. I
mean he comes across as a well spoken, neatly presented lad. He even seems
out of place in his family when compared with his father and brother.

If wearing his brothers joggers is anything to go on, I'd say he knows. :b
Ste is the original hard luck kid!

Nah. It's a lurgy flurgy.
Take care,
Andy.

Consider Ste's current situation. He has spent the night - naked - in
bed with another boy. It's a week or so later and he hasn't even seen
his next door neighbor, Jamie. He goes to a party with friends but ends
up out on the patio alone with nothing but a drink and his tablets of
E. He is not a "happy camper" at this moment. I imagine a little
Ecstacy would seem quite appealing even to a guy who normally didn't do
drugs himself.

Yeah, but he's just at that "growth spurt" age, so it's likely that as
little as a year ago, he was quite a bit shorter.

I'm sure it's an inside joke. In the film there are a couple of scenes
where the door closes and the number is prominently displayed when it
didn't need to be. Perhaps someone on the set said, "Hey, we need to
change the numbers to protect privacy. Was number should we use?" And
some wise guy, perhaps Jonathan, said, in a moment of gay frivolity,
"Oh, change it to, uh, 2-69. Yeah, that's it. 269." As Beavis and
Butthead would say, "He said '69'. Heh heh."

May I be the first to congratulate you!!!!!!! :))) (but knowing my luck

PS. Oh, and hope you had a nice Labor Day weekend. I suppose it was,
considering the "successfully" part!!! - although it's almost the *next*
weekend already!
