The bus indead does go the wrong way, they closed the entire stretch
of road for the film and had a few card driving around in a lopp to
create the traffic.

Hi Mark and all!!
I'm beginning to think this list is magical (as if it wasn't already!).
I'm
saying this because it's really incredible that Mark asked such a
question
after two boys 'married' last night on TV. In live!!
You see, there's a show called 'Martian Chronicles' in which the host
and
his assistants feign they are in Mars and they analize, interview and
criticize 'Earthlings' and our weird ways. Of course, most of the show's
contents focus on a certain country named Spain, in a far away planet.
(which can be seen through a make-believe window)
Well, last night they talked about Spain's current situation regarding
gay
rights and gay couples. Since our actual Government is a conservative one,
we are still far behind the ideal situation. Gay couples can 'marry' and
form what is called: "una pareja de hecho" (I have absolutely no idea how
to
translate it, but I pray it's something like "a de facto couple"). It
sounds
really pompous, but sadly, it's merely a formality as far as rights is
concerned. There's a civil ceremony, rings' exchange and the couple
and
their witnesses sign a book but that is all. When one of them dies the
other
receives no pension, they can't make a joint income tax declaration as a
couple... you get the picture. Our Parliament very recently voted for
granting gay and straight couples who are not legally married (but who are
'de facto' couples) the same rights married couples have. But since our
Government is majority, they voted against it. This has created a lot of
resentent, since our society approves (overwhelmingly, let me tell you) of
gay rights. A few days ago, a survey said that about 85% of Spanish
society
approved of gay couples and their 'legalization' as any other couple, with
their rights and obligations. Our youth is the most tolerant, with almost
90%. Old people have still trouble with it, although more than 60% accept
it.
So, it seems our politicians still don't get it. Once again, our
society is
far more advanced than our 'representatives'. We all know sooner or later
'de facto' couples will be legalized, but it is a waste of time and a
pathetic display of stubbornness on our politicians part.

Legalities aside, from personal experience I can say Spanish society is
really tolerant of gay couples. Of course, there are those 'skin heads'
and
other fascists who beat anyone with cool clothes, but is a minority.
I've
seen two men holding hands in the street (and kissing) and no one blinked
an
eye. There are gay book shops and gay bars around the "Chueca" area and
the
neighbourhood accepts them and they are absolutely integrated. In fact,
it's
one of the most peaceful neighbourhoods in Madrid.

Last night's 'Martian Chronicles' show was really cute. The two boys
were
about 25 years old (And sooooo cute!!). Their names were Juan Carlos and
RaFAl. They said they were friends for years but they were boyfriends for
only two months. They were VERY sure about what they were doing and that
it
was forever. They exchanged rings and they kissed twice (and the audience
went wild!). A Mayor married them and he said some beautiful words. They
were forming a family, that from now on they were each other's support
and
comfort and that the other's well-being should be above any other
consideration since they were leaving their families behind to form a new
one...
They were stealing glances at each oter and smiling shyly, and they were
trembling when they had to put the rings on. Then they and the witnesses
signed the record book and they left running after a rain of rice.

What can I say? Ahhhh, love is GREAT!!!

Take care.
Sandra.

For those of you looking for the screenplay, barnesandnoble.com has it
on their web site. It is a special order so whether or not they can
really get it is questionable. I ordered it today so will let you all
know. I tried a similar order through amazon.com a while back and they
ultimately told me that they could not get it. Anyway! Just thought id
share that bit of info.
By the way, I'm not really new here as I was on the list before the
latest shutdown, and it took forever for me to finally get back on the
list (thanks Chris 3D]). This is mainly for Kent who told me that I
needed to give an introduction (hehehehe).
Im a BT fan living in southwest Georgia (US and not Russia!!!). I
first found the movie in my local Blockbuster store. They have a
special section for gay themed movies...which is really hard to believe
for a southern, bible belt town!!!!! So, I picked it up and fell in
love with it from the opening sequence! I have since seen it more times
than I can count on my fingers and toes!!
So, I hope that satisfies Kent!!! I'm not too good at posting, but yall
have really posted some neat stuff and I read them all, each and every
one! Glad to be aboard again...I missed this while it was down and
while I was struggling to get back on board!

Hiya, all!
Let me echo the chorus of (on-pitch, I'm sure! <G>) "Welcome's" to
Mark! (Mark, my hometown of Massena, NY, is also Upstate NY-- as in,
all the way "Up", right at the Canadian Border-- where are you from,
then?) Also, I am *always* glad (as some of you know) for the
elaboration on the "behind-the-scenes" aspects of the filming of
Beautiful Thing! Thanks, Jeff and Chris. Add my vote to the idea of a
BT mini "gay Cruise" down the Thames! I remember taking a similar jaunt
down the Thames to Windsor on my first visit to Euope in 1980; a boat
ride would be a pleasant and leisurely way to share sights and
conversation. BT-- the BoaT! Yeah!
I live in Brooklyn, part of New York City, which makes us Gay Mecca
East, Mike! With the Manhattan neighborhoods of Greenwich Village and
the Upper West Side, plus Park Slope in Brooklyn, NYC is famously "gay
tolerant", even if many people living in the "outer boroughs" (meaning
every place in NYC except for Manhattan) still cling to intolerant and
conservative views (sadly). Gay politics, and gay representation *in*
politics, is not unknown, but it isn't common (on a City-wide level),
either. I agree that workplace integration, as the most neutral spot
for gays and straights to intermingle and get to know each other as
individuals, is helping shatter stereotypes and minimize prejudice. My
Governmental Agency, the Social Security Administration, has an
anti-discrimination policy which (beyond the standard of most other US
Federal Employers) *does* list homosexuals as a designated group against
whom overt discrimination is not accepted. I happen to be "out" to many
friends at work, with no problem at all (and I am sure everyone knows,
anyway.)
Kent
always glad to be a part of this list!

To all members of the list:
Thank you all for such a warm welcome to the list. I already feel
quite at home. How fabulous that a movie can bring so many people
together.
My response to the movie was this: I could not believe how well I
could identify with the character of Jamie. It was like watching my own
life ( with better looking characters!) Physical Education was always a
source of great trauma for me. My first boyfriend was a very athletic,
popular guy who couldn't be gay in the community that we grew up in (
Actually he is married to a woman and has a kid now!!).
Everytime I watch the movie, tears positively come to my eyes
everytime i see the scene in the woods and "Make Your Own Kind of Music"
is playing. It is the most exhilerating and liberating moment that I have
ever seen on film. i'm not even sure why...maybe it is its simplicity.
The movie certainly never overstates the obvious and the stereotypes.
Thank God... it's honesty just makes me even cry more.
I also think the guy who plays Jamie...( i am still trying to get a
copy of the movie for myself, so I haven't got the names yet) is one of
the most gorgeous young men on film. Does anyone know if he has done any
other films...that would be availible in America?
Again...thank you for the warm welcomes!!!
Love and Honesty:
Mark

Wow Sandra, that must have been a thrill to see. I remember when I was in
school we watched a tv documentary called Future Shock (we're talking
early
seventies here). In part of this programme they showed two men getting
married, more or less to say that it was 'unusual' then but something that
society would look upon as 'normal' in the future. I've never had a
problem
with gay marriages, although I've never had the opportunity to experience
it first hand, to me it's the same as any other marriage. Anyhow, getting
back to Mark's off topic subject, society attitudes today have change
enormously compared to 20-30 years ago.
In my corner of the earth (Tasmania, Australia) it was illegal to have gay
sex here until about April this year. After many years of campaigning by
local gay activists the law was change mainly due to a more favourable
change in public attitudes towards gays. Overnight, Tasmania went from
being extremely backward and bigoted to one of the most progressive gay
tolerant states in Australia. Well, that's how I see it, others here in
Australia may have a different view.
Andy.

And, Sandra, I don't know whether "a de facto couple" accurately translates
"una pareja de hecho" but the concept is so funny I had to LOL. I'm
adopting it into my personal English lexicon. Now if anyone asks me if I'm

Heeey! I never said "needed"; I even said (on IRC this was) "it's

Hi, BT Crew!
This is my *very first* post to the list. Sandra and Kent are leaping
with
joy, I'm sure, since I have sent lots of (mostly whining) mail to them,
and
now the burden can be split among the 42 (or more) members on the whole

At any rate, I will do a proper "Who in the world is he?" post soon. For
now
I only have a couple minutes to respond to the post I copied above
regarding
the Barnes & Noble site and their listing of the BT Screenplay. Be
warned: I
ordered it on July 7. Every two weeks I receive an e-mail from B&N
telling me
my order has been delayed and will ship within the next two weeks. For
those
of you not doing the math, I have been waiting * FIVE MONTHS * for my
order.
Needless to say, I do not anticipate getting my order before I lose all my
teeth and go senile. But, maybe somebody else will have better luck. If
anybody *does* succeed in getting the screenplay from B&N, please let me
know
so that I can begin some type of appropriate harrassment campaign. Until
then, I will simply remain disgruntled and whining, at least about this
issue!

admit
that I've been on for a few weeks now but I've just been sitting back
spectating,
waiting for something worthwhile to say. (This may not be worthwhile, but
I'll
take the risk)
In response to Mark's question, I live in the States, just south of
Boston,
Massachusetts. I would have to say that attitudes towards gays here is
pretty liberal. Massachusetts is one of the few states that has a gay
rights law on the books. This, of course, gives us our so-called special
rights.
It doesn't free some people from their simple little minds, but overall
the
climate
here is very favorable. My partner and I have never faced any discriminati
on
either at work or other businesses. We have joint accounts at a number of
banks and businesses and we've never even had so much as a second look.
OK maybe once or twice, but nothing so bad that it concerned me.
That's my 2 cents worth. This is a great group, and I'm glad to be a
part
of it. I love reading other's feelings and musings on BT. I look forward
to
more.

I know everyone who doesn't have it is dying to get a copy, so I debating

Hello All!
More webpage updates:
Let's see... the French BT poster has been added to the PIX section (it is
almost identical to the Spanish one).
I added a new section: "Beautiful Thing". There is the usual synopsis
(actually this one is from the US video press release) plus a "Play"
section. This Play section gives info on past and future productions of
the
play, and will be expanded and updated shortly.
The Links section no longer keeps you in a frame, but rather opens a nice
new fresh window for your browsing pleasure! (that's for you, Jeffo).
There is better access now for those without frame capability (or for
those
who hate them!):
AND... my site will shortly be joining the Beautiful Thing Webring.
That's all for now!

Hi, everybody!
First, as we all got our Multiple Messages today, we can breathe a sigh
of relief that the list is OK (I was gettin' worried!) <There, there,
"good list, you're doing just fine...">
Anyway, Sandra and I have been engaging in an email continuation of the
"what if" game we played before-- you may recall the idea she had for
"Scenes I Wish Had Been Included in BT". Although that idea kinda
"lead-ballooned" :(, that hasn't stopped us! We have been writing a
version of Jamie and Ste's Night Together-- sort of an Alternate
Universe, maybe, or a "wishful thinking". We would each write a
section, and leave off the text for the other one to pick up the
"thread". Now, if the group feels this to be a waste of time, or just
silly, we won't be offended. We know in the past some people have
objected to off-topic posts. But it is also true that fanfiction has
a
history, too, and we only did this in fun, of course (and it continues
the "did they or didn't they" debate). Each post will be labelled as
BT Scene, First Part, Second Part, and so on, so those who wouldn't
have an interest in this kind of thing can chuck the postings right
away!
Well, it was just an idea which at least a couple others of us thought
might be amusing to read (Hi, Andre and chichi! <G>). You can let us
know whether or not proceeding is a dumb idea or not, we aren't at all
"touchy' about it! <GG>

"OK to Post"!)

HI,
The screenplay is not as hard to get as everyone seems to think. As Keith
points out, it's published in the UK, NOT the US. It's available here
through the Drama Book Shop in New York City. They constantly are
re-ordering it, so if they don't have it, they will in a few weeks. I
know,
because I've been in there many times. And they'll do mailorder. They even
have an 800 number.
Secondly, It's very easy to order directly from the publisher. That's how
I
got my first copy, and it didn't take very long to get here, either. I
emailed Methune to find out how to order and even got a discount for
mentioning Davd Moody's website (details are posted on his site).

DEATH OF AN INNOCENT
********************************
I went to a party, Mom, I remembered what
you said.
You told me not to drink, Mom, so I drank
soda instead.
I really felt proud inside, Mom, the way you
said I would.
I didn't drink and drive, Mom, even though the others said
I should.
I know I did the right thing, Mom, I know
you are always right.
Now the party is finally ending, Mom, as
everyone is driving outof sight.
As I got into my car, Mom, I knew I'd get
home in one piece.
Because of the way you raised me, so
responsible and sweet.
I started to drive away, Mom, but as I
pulled out into the road,
the other car didn't see me, Mom, and hit me
like a load.
As I lay there on the pavement, Mom, I hear
the policeman say, the other guy is drunk, Mom, and now I'm
the one who will pay.
I'm lying here dying, Mom.. I wish you'd
get here soon.
How could this happen to me, Mom? My life
just burst like a balloon.
There is blood all around me, Mom, and most
of it is mine.
I hear the medic say, Mom, I'll die in a
short time.
I just wanted to tell you, Mom, I swear I
didn't drink.
It was the others, Mom. The others didn't
think.
He was probably at the same party as I.
The only difference is, he drank and I will
die.
Why do people drink, Mom? It can ruin your
whole life.
I'm feeling sharp pains now. Pains just
like a knife.
The guy who hit me is walking, Mom, and I
don't think it's fair.
I'm lying here dying and all he can do is
stare.
Tell my brother not to cry, Mom. Tell Daddy
to be brave.
And when I go to heaven, Mom, put "Daddy's
Girl" on my grave
Someone should have told him, Mom, not to
drink and drive.
If only they had told him, Mom, I would
still be alive.
My breath is getting shorter, Mom. I'm
becoming very scared.
Please don't cry for me, Mom. When I needed
you, you were always there.
I have one last question, Mom, before I say
good bye.
I didn't drink and drive, so why am I the
one to die?

Wow!
Someone took the effort to write this poem.
So please, forward this to as many people as
you can.

Speak to you soon!!

Boy, I wonder what we would have to pull over here in the states to get BT
on television. I think the southern baptists would drop dead of shock
when
they saw it, not that that's a totally bad thing<G>.

Hi everybody!
First of all, David, welcome at last! I was wondering when you would
delurk!
:)
BTW, I *did* leap with joy. Oh, I bought both the screen and the
stageplay
at http://www.bookshop.co.uk
It took only ten days to arrive and the price is OK.
Second, it's GREAT they show BT on TV! Here, they are showing on TV many
films that were released at the same time BT was released. Since BT's
been
released for sale two weeks ago (although I got it sooner... :) ) maybe
we'll have to wait a few months. It's entirely possible that around
March/April we'll have the chance to see it. Two months ago we saw
Jeffrey
on TV.
And third, sorry but I HAVE to say it. If you haven't checked Eric's
site
yet, DO IT NOW!! OHGODOHGODOHGODOHGOD-OH-MY-GOD!!!! That picture of Ste
and
Jamie 'almost' dancing... Thank goodness I was already sat!! My legs
are
still trembling. It's the sweetest picture I've EVER seen. I've been
watching it more than ten minutes, I couldn't get enough of it!!!
It's
turned me into jelly!!! I can't stop sighing!! Dear God, what a sweet
thing!! I have no words!!! Please, go see it NOW!!!
I'm sorry for mumbling like this but I've been COMPLETELY blown away.

Take care. (I'm gonna send this message and watch it ten more minutes!!!
)

Sandra.

Following up on my earlier post: as a service to BT fans, i've bought
extra
screenplays and stageplays and have them available. So, if you want
either
one, send me a private "e" and i'll send the details to you (i'm just
asking
to recoup my cost, so the price to you is the purchase price plus
postage...).
love,
Jay

I would have to agree that many Southern Baptists would drop dead at the
sight
of BT. I actually could probably attest to this being the truth; my family
is
Southern Baptist. YIKES, that is what I have dealt with!
Anyway, I am not sure if I have officially joined this mailing list or
not--time will tell.
I am 19 and adore BT, it sums the world of being a gay teen up quite
precisely. I have rented the movie at least 12 times, and have viewed it
probably 20 or more! I am looking for a place to purchase the movie, to no
avail. I am considering pirating a copy myself, but would prefer the real
thing. If anyone has any idea where I can purchase a copy of BT here in
the
states, please let me know. Email me: Donald6031@aol.com
Thans to all you who are making being young and gay a little less
trying!
:-)

Well, thankfully, we have _real_ TV, otherwise known as cable. :)
I
wouldn't be at all suprised to see BT show up on Cinemax in the "Vanguard
Cinema" segment. A lot of gay and gay-themed films have been shown there.
I
only wish I could get the Sundance Channel which shows _lots_ of gay-themed
films.

ROFLMAO, Jon! You go, Boy! Made my day, Dude! And I am perfectly
within my right to chuckle since I live in the so-called "buckle" of
the "Bible Belt" here in the southeastern USA.

Sandra, creo que es una idea "guay" y que nos

Kent, don't worry! I will *never* tell Sandra about
that secret post you sent to me about how you will be doing all
the main writing and will just let Sandra think that she is providing
something worthwhile, just so she won't feel bad. I think you are
quite the gentleman for wanting to help her self-esteem out. Shhhhh...
I'll never let he know, OK? :-)

Jay:
Yes, I'm a lurker on the BT list. (Someday, I'll 'come out!') I would
love to purchase a copy of the stage play's script. I have tried to
find it in the big theatrical listings here (US) and can't.
I'm on the play reading committee for a 99-seat equity waiver theatre,
you see, and we will soon be reading for the next season. I would love
to have the committeee consider doing "Beautiful Thing."
If your copies are gone by the time you receive this (and I'm sure you
will be ~very~ popular!), could you let me know which theatre group
holds the rights to the play. (It should be listed on the frontpiece
similarly to how the the publisher is listed for a novel.)
Many thanks!

A low-budget, English film about 2 working -class gay kids on TV in
the States? I don't care how much I liked it, I'm still not going to
hold
my breath. Although the Southern Baptists perishing would be a nice
bonus.
