Others have written their's for the two lads. Heres mine. After a long
and beautiful life together they reach St.Peter at the "Pearly Gates".
He asks but one question "Did you love?" Each holding the other's hand
and looking into each other's eyes they respond in unison "Yes". " 'Tis
enough" St Peter says "that's all the Lord asked us to do" and lets them

Yes, auditions for the Sydney production were displayed in Australia's
largest daily newspaper, The Sydney Morning Herald which is the main
newspaper audition source for Sydney actors. And everyone reads the paper,
gay and straight. Auditions were also sent through acting schools and
casting and management agents.
There was certainly no attempt to get straight actors and most of the
people who did reply to the SMH advertisement were gay.
Incidentally, the actor playing Ste is openly gay. The director (that's
me)
is openly gay as are members of the crew. As for the other four actors, I
haven't asked them.
I hope this clarifies the issue for you.
Cheers,
Michael

Date: Mon, 5 Jan 1998 10:16:19 -0400
Hi there BT fans
This isn't really a Rehearsal Update as we haven't been rehearsing over
the
last two weeks! I though I'd just send everyone a Happy New Year message.
I spent New Years with my two "Beautiful Things", Simon and Andrew. We
went
to the PRIDE dance party in Sydney along with about 10,000 other gay men,
lesbians and a few straight people.
On Saturday, Simon and I were interviewed on FREE FM which is a gay and
lesbian readio station in Sydney. The interview went very well and they
even played "It's Getting Better" during the interview.
Anyway, rehearsals resume on Tuesday night (6th Jan) with the actors set
for another intensive accent lesson. I'll keep you posted.
Kind regards
MICHAEL

He came down the last stair
Dressed in plaid-- handsome sight!
Then we walked to the square
Our two hands holding tight.
(I knew we could do it. It felt oh-so-Right!)
As we started to dance
Cheek to cheek, circling slow,
People seemed to advance
Some were murmuring low.
(But we're happy together, we don't care that they know!)
My joy made me bolder
My arms were around STE!
My head on his shoulder
My love's dancing-- with *me*!
(I felt peace, sweet release, and I was suddenly free!)
Now it's Leah and-- *Mum*!
Hand in hand down the stairs.
The crowd-- nearly struck *dumb*
They're all caught unawares.
(Blue benches now vacant-- they've all left their chairs.)
Me Mum catches Ste's eye
Makes a joke, breaks the ice.
He smiles back in reply
God, he's lookin' so nice!
(Ste's eyes-- they're like gemstones-- beyond *any* price.)
We still keep on dancing
We're in Love. All can see
It's *Ste* I'm romancing.
He's *my* love, he's with *me*.
(Should I get *my* wish, that's how it'll always be.)
We both dance to the Song
That we hear in our heart--
LOVE-- to last a life long
We'll NEVER be apart!
(To be "out", to be "open"-- the best possible start!)
With a deep orange glow
(It's the heat wave's last fling),
The warm sun sinks down low--
Such a sight! Nature's "King"!
(No! "LOVE" *That's* the most Magical, Most Beautiful Thing!)
Kent
P.S. Thanks, Andy, for the idea.

However I have tried a few other Bodyshop lines. My favourite being

But
I didn't see it listed on their web site. Maybe it's sold under another

Anyway, this was just a shameless attempt to get more page hits for my web

Subject: Holiday viewing
While I was in Detroit for the holidays (place of birth, formative years
and first lover (sigh.....)) I took a copy of BT with me. While staying
in
the apartment of my 79 year old surrogate mother (my real mom died when I
was 13, & Flo and I sort of adopted each other quite some time ago, before
I left Detroit for NYC, Broadway lights and The Saint!), I offered that I
had brought it with me. Well, she immediately made it an evening and
invited her 84 year old retired psychiatrist lover to view it with us.
(Over Thankgiving I had suggested "Kiss Me Guido" and they took me up on
it; horrible sound, which ruined the picture)
It was my first complete viewing since last Spring, when BT was last on
the
big screen in Philly, so it was refreshing. She loved the film : )
though they both missed some of it due to the accents and the unfamiliar
slang. He fell asleep (horrors, though forgivable). I translated bits
when she asked. We had some discussion afterwards and later on the next
day. About bits here and there. She thought the dancing at the end,
while
sweet and effective, unreal, given the tenor of Thamesmead. Well.... more
revelations about my love life and my 'dancing scene' with my first lover
in one of the most public spaces in Detroit during the height of a summer
festival (Detroit is not! Greenwich Village). She really loved Sandra.
Sort of identified with her and understood where she was coming from.
Thought the character was well played.
After viewing the film again and replaying many of our discussions, I have
to rethink one of my opinions. I recognize why many feel that Ste and
Jamie might not have had sex on that first night. I had glossed over the
import of Ste admitting that he had never thought of what he fancied.
While I had assumed that growing up in Thamesmead in today's world (as I
had grown up in a working class neighborhood in Detroit) that there were
frequent sexual exposures and therefore Ste was aware of sex, though might
not have experienced it. By admitting that he hadn't thought of it and
later the spurning the opportunities of sex with a girl after the party,
he
clearly was just beginning the contemplation of where his desires were.
So
I will conceed that it just might be possible that Ste and Jamie did not
have sex on that first night (though having been a sixteen year old boy
once, I still think it unlikely that they didn't (shoot, at sixteen all I
had to do is look at someone's thigh a certain way and almost come on the
spot, so two naked sixteen year old boys in bed who fancied each
other........). : )

Sandra, you're one terrific person. : )

Hi Matt,
The list is an open list. If an email gets sent to
then it will be distributed to everyone on
the mailing list. The only control I exercise at the moment is that
mail from certain addresses (know spam havens). I always hoped that
the mailing list would be for the discussion of BT and the issues
arising from this discission. If the ammount of chat that isn't
related to the list increases i'll have a word with the individuals
involved.

Matt,
I hardly think the one or two odd messages inadvertently sent to the wrong
address, or slightly off topic, constitutes the BT list being open for
any discussion.
Going back through the older messages (and I've got 'em all) I see how
truly focused this list has stayed, not only on BT, but on topics
directly, or indirectly inspired by BT, and probably of interest to most
on the list.
Besides, that's what God invented the <DELETE> key for. : )

This issue has been raised before, I know. Different people have
varying opinions as to the long-term benefit of a group of people
emailing each other about the same little movie (but some people have
been on the list, and have seen BT, only recently). I happen to agree
with Mike and Gary , who have posted that they view this
forum
as a means of discussing those things which we have in common--
primarily BT, but (for the vast majority of us) being gay as well.
Clearly, Matt, you somewhat share that view, as one of your posts
responded to Ben 's inquiry about how he should come out to
his family-- not a BT issue at all, yet it was something worth a
sympathetic and interested reader's attention, right? While I think
that strictly individual messages are more appropriate for email,
*incorporating* individual asides into posts (because people, via this
list, have in some cases become acquainted with each other on an
individual basis) seems entirely germaine to the idea of "community"--
centered on BT-- which this list has helped foster for a number of us.

We talk about BT, certainly, but we also talk about *US* (as in the
Introductions we made about a month or so ago).
I also subscribe under my WebTV handle, Matt, but I don't recall getting
a post with "no content at all" (unless you mean my doggerel! :))
The real issue seems to be why so many people would be interested in
being on such a list (however ill-defined its focus) and yet never
bother to post anything at all!! (Excepting those who may still be
closeted, that is.) True, it takes time to write, and we do have our
lives to live-- people aren't spending all day online.
As for me, I never thought *anyone* was "at the switch" since anything
a
list subscriber sends to the list gets sent automatically to everyone
else (that's what I *surmise*-- being no 'Net-expert at all, myself!--
a
mail list does); there is no Moderator or screening process. The
only ones at any switches are-- we!
Kent
switching off now!

It's great stuff, Andy. When the new Wolfchase Galleria, an
enormous
shopping mall, opened about an hour from here in suburban Memphis, I
drove down to check the place out and was delighted to find a Body Shop.
So, of course I had to look for Peppermint Foot Lotion. I think I was

to be looking for a very specific item. :)
So far I've used it only on my feet, but I'd sure consider it for,

other occasions. ;)

I only hope 1998 is the year that it goes on sale for purchase, as
opposed to the rental price. I already own it, but that would allow a
lot more people to become BT fanatics.
My US video copy is in Surround Sound, which I don't have, but the
other night I watched it at a friend's house who does have it and the
effect was really neat. The music is the most effective part of the
surround sound and it was especially great during the final dance
scene.

Okay, lets get this sorted. For a email attachment to do harm to you
machine you have to run it. No for most email packages running an
email attachment is not the defualt option. .jpgs and .gifs can not
contatin viruses(virui?) so they are safe to view. It is best never
to run a program sent to you via email from someone you don't know as
it could do anything (format your hard-disk, delete windows).

OK. Fair enough. At least you didn't forward one of those
horrible
chain letters asking us to ignore any mail with the header "xyz"
or
something like that.....

Tsk.

Hey guys, I have been one of those lurkers, merely 'listening' to the
conversations and exchanges taking place. I speak out now to warn you all.
DO
NOT DOWNLOAD ANYTHING! I am serious about this...do not download anything
that
comes as an attachment to an an email. There are what is called "Trojan
Horse
Viruses" that are spreading like wildfire. Apparently they are automaticall
y
sent via email from one infected computer to another.

I would hate to see ANY fellow BT fans have their computers demolished
from
this dastardly virus. So please, for all of our sakes; be wary of what
you
download until this blows through.

Thanks and next time I promise to have something more positive to say.
:-)

Donald, a BT fan and a half!

The subject line of your message - 'Ello - reminded me to mention
my
surprise the other day when, while perusing the huge magazine selection
at the local Davis-Kidd Booksellers and Cafe (an enormous bookstore and
restaurant) here in Jackson, Tennessee, I came upon several copies of,
you guessed it, "Hello." I'd never actually seen a copy before to look
through and, though Princess Diana was on the cover, all I could think
about was Jamie and Ste. :)

Hello,
Recently, a french gay magazine wanted me to write a review about BT.
I think it may interest you as it interest me to know what you think about
the movie :)
Here's the english translation :
--------------------------
BEAUTIFUL THING
I can't exactly remember how I discovered "Beautiful thing" but it's one
of
these precious movies who helps you to know more the others, and to know
yourself more.
It's a simple story about three teenagers in the south of London,
Thamesmead, during a hot summer. Jamie is rejected by his class mates and
hates football, and games in general. Ste is big football and swimming
fan.
He's everybody's best friend, but at home he's beaten by his drunken
father
und brother. And there's Leah, excluded from school and the biggest Mama
Cass fan.
Sandra, Jamie's mother is a winner. She tries to understand her son, fight
to have a new job and tries to have a relation with her hippy boyfriend
Tony.
One evening, coming back from work, Sandra takes Ste, beaten one more time
by his family, under her protection. The boy will spend more and more
nights
in Jamie's bed. The two teenagers will find in each other what they miss
the
most. For Jamie, Ste is THE friend, the one he can tell everything. And
Ste
finds in Jamie the affection and love he doesn't have at home. Jamie and
Ste
meet more and more often, become confidents and their friendship ends in
love. For them, the situation is normal, but it isn't for the other. Even
through outside's attacks, their love is stronger.
But not only Ste and Jamie find their luck. The other caracters also find
a
way to changer their life in a better way.
A simple movie, with unknown actors. The only star in the movie is Mama
Cass, which music goes so exactly to some of the scenes, as if it was
written especially for this movie.
A simple movie, but a so true movie, who remembers us our lifes, and
that's
why everything seems so right. I think the message of the movie is
"believe
in your dreams, believe in yourself". That's why "Beautiful thing" is a
very
positive movie.
A "must seen" movie, gay or not, the most important thing is to have
enough
sensibility to understand it and to understand its message.
-----------------
Phil,

Hi, and welcome to the list! BTW, what's your name?
Yep, it IS a great movie, if it wasn't we wouldn't be here, right? :)
Anyway, five days and counting! Still no sign of the longer trailer but I
expect it in a couple of days at most!
Take care.

This subject has never arisen before, but the thing is that we also have
the
'Hello' magazine in Spain. It's exactly the same one they publish in
Great
Britain. Here it's called (obviously) 'Hola'. I can just imagine the
smiles in Spanish' movie theatres when they saw Jamie and Ste reading a
magazine we also read over here. I've read it often (mostly at the
hairdresser's shop, ya know...). It was around since I can remember.
When I first saw it, I felt I had something in common with the characters.
I know this may sound stupid, but I felt some sort of attachment between
myself and Jamie and Ste.
Oh, well... I'm daydreaming again. Sorry.
4 days and counting...
Take care.
Sandra.

I can identify -- I was at Border's Bookstore - in Attleboro, Mass, of all
places -- the other day and found several copies of "Gay Times". Now, the
major bookstores are not only stocking american Gay themed mags, but
imports
as well. The times, they are a changin'!!

'Ello and welcome to the list. I'm Andy from Australia. Yes, Beautiful
Thing is a great movie. You are in for a good time and are about to make
many new friends from all over the planet. Since I joined the list I've
had
many conversations with fellow fans, expressing their feelings and ideas
on
a wide range of topics, not only about BT but many other things as well. I
think it's made me a better person. Hope you like it here. :)
Your AOL account doesn't tell me much about where you're from, so where on
earth are you? :))

Cheers and welcome,
Andy.

We get Gay Times and Hello in Atlanta as well. And we have a couple
of Body Shop stores selling Peppermint Foot Lotion -- it's a small and
shrinking "Beautiful" world.

PS. Before I get flamed for not putting enought BT-related emails
into my entries....
We also have "Hello" magazine, but it's the imported one from
Britain.
We also import Gay Times, and all those mags. But we've had them
since I can remember, so it's no biggie for us. I only really
noticed
Hello when I saw it on BT (never read it before)...

Located in Washington State in the USA.
I have never seen any of the magazines from the movie in my area. It's
kind
of disheartening, because I like to read foreign articles. Oh well, maybe
some of them will be imported eventually.

Subject: Peppermint foot lotion

Hey guys, how goes it? I told you the next time I write, I would have good
news...well here it is: Today I was at my grandmther's house...she had
peppermint foot lotion on top of her chest of drawers. Needless to say, I
grabbed it and asked where she got it. Know what her resonse was? AVON!
Yes,
that is correct. She said she ordered it through her AVON sales rep. for a
couple of bucks! (I think she said $1.95US if I am correct). Obviously, a
19
year old "straight" grandson can not order peppermint foot lotion from his
grandmother, but you bet I am going to find an AVON person to buy from! I
have
also seen it in several of the shoppes that offer bath and beauty stuff.
And
this is Kentucky, so I am sure it is out there other places too. :-)
Good luck to you all in finding the lotion--it works wonders in many
ways!
Your fellow BT fan,
Donald

Does anybody maintain some form of a frequently asked questions file for
Beautiful Thing?
Just wondering, before I start wasting my time!
