Dear Hannes

Thanks for your very sweet posts. I would love to give you a
second-by-second account of the play's progress - but then I wouldn't have
anytime for anything else in my life (ie sleep, eating, sex).

Tonight is the launch of the 1998 Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival
at Sydney Opera House. The whole cast will be there (except Charles (Tony)
because he's got a hot date), wearing our Beautiful Thing T-Shirts. I
don't
think I've mentioned them before. We've got great tshirts with the BT logo
on them. And everyone likes wearing a tshirt with the words Beautiful and
Thing.

Michael, I love that poster. The guys are fabbo. Last week when I was on
the BT IRC channel, there was some discussion about the poster and how old
the actors (Simon & Andrew) looked. Didn't bother me none.

I'm glad Australia has PAL, it's a much clearer picture and easier to
engineer around (tv tech speak). Are you making copies of the video
available??? As for poor Eric, you would have guessed he's not in a very
good mood at the moment.

In short: No.

...here's why...

The default settings for most subscribers on the list are just like mine
below:
(The exception here is I recieve the digest version as well.)

Message Receipt Suspended (SUSPEND/RESUME): No
Receive Ordinary Mail (MAIL/NOMAIL): Yes
Receive Multipart/Mixed Digests (DIGEST/NODIGEST): Yes
Receive Multipart/Digest Digests (DIGESTMD/NODIGEST): No
Receive Text/Plain Digests (DIGESTTEXT/NODIGEST): No
Receive Binary Attachments (RECBIN/NORECBIN): No
Conceal Personal Details in messages (CONCEAL/NOCONCEAL): No
Include Name in Public Membership List (PUBLIC/NOPUBLIC): No

The default is not to recieve binary attachments. Chris  (who
runs
this list) could probably elaborate on this more than I.

BTW Chris, what is a "Digest Digests"? Is it the constipated version!!!

Eric,

I just wanted to repond with my opinion on the matter of copying your
web site. Agreed, what Paul did is cheap, and shows an incredible
lack of consideration to you, and the others on this list.

But is hurting all your friends on the list to spite one individual
really
accomplishing anything? It seems that is more like stooping to Paul's
level. You have worked too long and hard (!) to just do this to your
web site.

Remember, most of the people on this list consider you their friend,
and we hope you consider us your friends. As such, if I have a
choice of visiting a web site of a friend, or someone else who stole
your originality, whose site do you think I'm going to visit???
(ok, nonlist members will never know whose site came from whose,
but I suspect you're more concerned with your friends (i.e. us) visiting

your site than the unknown masses)

Rather than being angry, maybe we should pity someone too
unoriginal to come up with their own web resources?

Keith

Hi BT's!

Can I just pop in here and say how good it is to be back amongst BT fans
and a
big"thanks" to Keith ?

I joined the original list last winter and returned from my pilgrimage to
Thamesmead last summer only to discover that the list was no more. It was
a
long summer/fall without you. Then Keith sent 'round an email advising
the
old-timers that a new list had been created.... after one failed attempt
to
subscribe, I made it.... and I can't tell you how good it is to be back
with
you. As if the movie itself isn't enough, the interchange and conversation
s
amongst those of us who have been so deeply moved (and touched and
impressed
and encouraged and nurtured and changed, etc, etc) is yet another BT gift.
Chris -- if you are the person responsible for the new list's creation,
THANK
YOU! (sorry if that was too loud).

(You can imagine last summer's disappointment on returning from my
adventures
(guided tour of the 'mead, a ride on the 180, half-pint of lager at the
Gloucester, a bottle of Peppermint Foot Lotion, etc, etc, etc) with lots
of
stories to tell and everyone (list-wise) having gone missing <boo hoo>.)

Right...... well, I just wanted you all to know how much you were missed
and
how good it is to re-find you. Enough for now.....

Cheers to all!

attract a large audience not only from the gay communitybut also the

I wholeheartedly agree. In Spain we also use PAL system and I find it
infinitely better than NTSC. My VCR allows me to watch NTSC tapes too,
so
I talk from personal experience.

I'm very happy everything is going so well. Simon and Andrew look
absolutely perfect as Jamie and Ste. I thought I would resent seeing
different faces other than Glen and Scott's, but even though it's plain
to see they're not 16 year old faces, there's a charm and an aura of
innocence around them (at least in the poster) that made me accept them
as
Jamie and Ste almost instantly. (It's a relief to see I'm finally
growing
up, 'cause the first time I saw 'The Kiss of the Spider Woman' in a
theatre I resented it. I suppose I was expecting William Hurt and Raul
Julia to appear and it was hard for me to accept the Spanish actors as
Molina and Valentin.)

I wish you all the luck in the world or as you say: "Break a leg!"
Okay, you can give us an hour-by-hour account of the play's progress.
(See
that we're very understanding of your personal life. <G>)

Take care.

Fellow Listers09

Firstly, I'm glad everyone likes the poster - I think it properly
demonstrates the mood of the play. (Although in Australia, some people
initially think it's a Wiggles poster - they're a group of Childrens'
entertainers who like wearing bright coloured shirts)

Also, Andrew and Simon don't look much like Glen and Scott I hope. And FYI
Simon and Andrew are 19yo.

Anyway, we all went to the launch of Mardi Gras last night wearing our BT
tshirts attracting a lot of attention. On the train from the Opera House
to
Newtown, we had the entire carriage [it was packed full of queens] singing
"It's Getting Better" and getting Simon and Andrew to sign posters, etc.
Also the boys got a great bit of publicity in the Mardi Gras guide, so
they're starting to get recognised.

Anyway, better go.

What a striking resemblance! TV Guide is doing one of their
"collector
covers," where they have four different covers for the same issue. I
chose the hockey player cover because I'm a hockey fanatic (played in
college as well). But I was busy getting groceries checked out and
didn't pay close attention otherwise.

Well, the old Carpenter's song "Rainy Days and Mondays" was very
appropriate today...got me in a glum mood so I watched the film to cheer
me up! Never fails!!!
Anyway, with the more times I watch, the more details seem to stand out.

First, I like the way that the boys aren't overtly gay in their manners,
speech. There are those little clues...the looks, the movies Jamie
watches...how many 16 year olds know that Eleanor Parker played the
Baroness in Sound of Music!... the rainbow at the beginning...the
rainbow t-shirt Jaime wears...the rainbow coloured lights next to his
bed, the rainbow colored kite on his wall...all very nice touches. I
love the way all the characters seem real...the way Sandra smokes her
cigarettes...I love how she flicks it away after dumping Tony. Speaking
of which...she dumps Tony at the same time she dumps Tony...another
subtle touch. Then at the end, the way she is staring at the
crowd...almost daring them to say or do something....oh so great!
One question...when the boys are reading Gay Times, Jamie says to go to
page 92 to see the ad...Ste turns to the front of the magazine...is this
a mistake, or are British mags number differently?

Anyway, it is still Monday and it is still rainy, but I do feel better!

Yeah the mailing list software doesn't allow attachments to be
sent. This is due to me having to pay for the time I'm connected to
the internet, and it takes a while to send large binary attachments

My name is Ste(ve) and I live in Medford, Mass. and access the list via
AOL,
where you can email me at

I subscribed to the list not too long ago, and for the past few weeks,
other
than an odd response here and there, I was pretty much what I guess is
called
a lurker. Sounds so sinister! I was having a grand ol' time trying to
figure
out who was who and and what all has been going on in the world of BT. In
a
way it was rather overwhelming....

It was January 2, 1998. The beginning of a new year. I was upbeat.
Things
had been rough over the past few years and despite current difficult
times, I
was upbeat - feeling good about myself for the first time in a long time.
Not
surprisingly, my movie viewing pleasure changed from the tragedies and
melo-
dramas to the light, funny, and uplifting.

It was in this frame of mind that I walked into my Video rental store
looking
for a new film to fit my sunny outlook early in what I was already
determined
was going to be my best year yet.

I walked up and down the racks with the best-sellers and recent releases.
The
Birdcage and Jeffrey both tempted me because besides being light, funny,
and
positive, they also dealt with gay themes. I'd picked up one, then
another
and then yet another video - only to put them all down and continue
searching.

Then I saw Beautiful Thing...........................

In a single word no. To try and reduce the volume of email I have to
transfer I decided that I would set th list up in such a away that no
one can send binaries to it. I would be quiet happy to provided
webspace for the picture, so if you want, email it to me.

In fact, the rest is yet to come. Stay tuned.....

Ste(ven),

Welcome to the list buddy! It's so funny how the little coincidences
in life can make such a big difference. I mean, you could have
grabbed any box of the shelf (and the BT box isn't exactly fetching,
now is it?) but you were drawn to Beautiful Thing. I was the same way
when I saw the preview in the theater. I've seen lots of previews
for gay-themed movies, but the BT preview somehow grabbed me,
and hooked me! Unfortunately, I didn't get to it in the theater, but
2 weeks later, I saw it on the video shelf, and dropped all other
boxes, and grabbed it. Like you, I feel BT is a ray of hope and
sunshine, in what can be a gloomy world sometimes.

(I now have the picture of Jamie and Ste embracing repeating
across my screen as Windows wallpaper - it's amazing how good
it is to see that each day, everytime I glance at my PC)

Dear BT fans

Well, less than one week to go before opening night and we are feeling
pretty excited/nervous. I must say, it is looking very good.

The bedroom scenes are <sizzling> ... I think some members of the audience
may not be able to stand up for interval (which immediately follows the
Peppermint Foot Lotion Scene). The complete fascination and youthful lust
Jamie has for Ste is so real it's scary.

And Sandra! She's going off and thankfully unlike the Sandra in the film
yet totally fantastic.

Anyway, better get some much needed beauty sleep - I am pretty darn
exhausted. I'm planning a little surprise birthday party for Simon
("Jamie") who farewells his teenage years tomorrow [Feb 5].

Cheers
MICHAEL

Hi. I don't have a way to scan the pix. But you can see it at the TV
GUIDE website. Here's the address:
http://www.tvguide.com/tv/magazine/980202/index.htm
As I said, it isn't Jamie, but it looked enough like him to make me
think so the first time I saw the pix. Hope that helps. MATT

Subject: Watching BT for the First Time

So there I was with this video that I had never seen or heard about before
with a cover that, as Kieth pointed out, was hardly fetching. Something
on
the back of the cover indicated that it was a light hearted love story.
And
was that a picture of two guys dancing on the back? Good enough for me
and I
decided to rent it even though I was prepared to be disappointed.

After I got home and took care of some unfinished business I had the rest
of
the day to myself and this movie. Put the tape in the VCR and then sat
through three of five advertisements (!) before fast forwarding to the
feature.

The dialogue in the first few scenes left me wondering if I was going to
get
much through the South London dialect and slang. Besides Balls, Mr.
Bennett, and Hugh Janus I didnt catch very much of that opening scene.
Mama Cass musical background to Jamies running home and then Sandras
racing
to catch up to him, certainly matched my mood, but I was still feeling a
bit
apprehensive about this movie all through Sandras confronting Jamie with
his
bunking off from school. Whole lines were zipping by me and although I
started to get a feel for the characters, I only caught about 3/5 of the
what
was being said.

Then came the scene where Ste has arrived back. The way Glen played that
single line Oright, Ste?! was great. Suddenly it didnt seem to matter too
much that I had no idea what Ste was saying... What was all that about
bunking off and bubble and squeak? And was he pronouncing his ths as fs
or vs? It didnt seem to matter that I couldnt understand the meaning.
Just the tones of the voices and the expressions on their faces seemed to
indicate this was going to be a good movie to watch.

Then Jamie says See ya, Ste, and that lingering glance!

No, this was not going to be just a good film, this was a great one as far
as
I was
concerned.......................
