Dear BT fans
Well, less than one week to go before opening night and we are feeling
pretty excited/nervous. I must say, it is looking very good.
The bedroom scenes are <sizzling> ... I think some members of the
audience
may not be able to stand up for interval (which immediately follows the
Peppermint Foot Lotion Scene). The complete fascination and youthful
lust
Jamie has for Ste is so real it's scary.
And Sandra! She's going off and thankfully unlike the Sandra in the
film
yet totally fantastic.
Anyway, better get some much needed beauty sleep - I am pretty darn
exhausted. I'm planning a little surprise birthday party for Simon
("Jamie") who farewells his teenage years tomorrow [Feb 5].
Cheers
MICHAEL

You can now see the first results from the charts on the homepage. Who's
the

Cass song ? This and more can be found in the charts results.
The voting-form has also changed, so I'm waiting for your votes!
Have fun,

Subject: The Next Three Weeks
Ive taken all this time to establish the mood, because what happened
during
those next 90 minutes and the following three weeks begs my limited skill
with
words to describe, but I am compelled to make the effort......
Those 90 minutes.... Oh, I could list the scenes, comment on the music,
the
actors, the director and production staff - and just may before I am
finished
with these postings - but the fact is I cried, laughed, whooped, hugged
myself
[ I watched it alone!! :-( ], I think I may have even jumped for joy a
few
times. It was a Beautiful Thing.........
As I have said, I got this movie when I was already in a as upbeat a mood
as I
had been in a very long time. I was thinking, planning and doing things
that
I had not dared or even thought of doing for years. I dont think it would
be
accurate to say that watching Beautiful Thing was the cause of what
happened
during the next three weeks - catalyst seems a better way of looking at
it.
But for about the next three weeks I was in a high that was so rare, so
right,
so content, so at peace that in that time I accomplished more about being
the
person I wanted to be than I have ever before. I took actions and steps
that
had been dreams for way too long. And when this incredible period of
creativity and happiness gradually resolved into someting resembling the
real
world, I found the world a much more Beautiful Thing....
To be is to be perceived. Perhaps I was just perceiving everything
through
that rainbow at the beginning of Beautiful Thing. The pain in your arse
is
really in your head! Maybe its all a figment of my imagination and a sad
obsession, but this time in my life is the time of Beautiful Things, and I
will always think of it in terms of this incredible film that I happened
to
comes across in just the right way, at just the right time.......
Over the next three weeks, besides getting a firm grip on my dreams and
life,
I managed find all those great web pages, these email lists and quite a
bit
more. Got myself the Stageplay, Screenplay, CD Sound Track, and my very
own
bottle of Peppermint Foot Lotion.
As the song says, An nobodys getting fat except Mama Cass......
As another song says - Its getting better. It is hard for me to imagine
any
film or similar experience that will ever be able to affect me in such a
profound way. But if things are, indeed, getting better then that day may
come..... And if it does, it will just be another Beautiful Thing and
only
enhance the original by its flattery....

Snow in Louisville! I've been there -- I used to work there at
WHAS TV.
You should be able to find enough support to get through being
snowed in as long as the power for your computer doesn't fail.
Start with Eric's most excellent BT website and work your way
around the ring.
Then, of course, there's Davie's webpage guestbook -- thousands
of entries to read there.
And when I checked the Newsgroup this morning there were about
145 entries.
Or you could spend your time fantacizing about Jamie and Ste
being snowed in someplace....
Don't worry -- your friends are standing by you in this crisis.
We'll pull you through.
Cheers,

I'm going to be very busy over the next week or so, as I'm
"removing" windows95 from my machines at home and replacing it with

For the time being (until i've sorted out exactly what is supposed
to do what) I'll only be running Win95 once a day, and therefore will
only collect and send messages for the mailing list once a day (I'll
be online around 19:00 GMT). Once everything is sorted I'll be trying
to move the list to Linux.
This also means I will proably not have a great deal of time to
reply to personal mail (which even before now can takes days for me
to sit down and reply to) so appologies in advance if I don't respond
to your email in a timely fashion. I will get round to it however
and will endvour to reply ASAP. If you have any important list
related problems would you please put "*****" (without the quotes) on
the subject line of the message and I'll try to read and reply to

*Eeeeek! I'm waffling aren't I?*
Anyways - i hope you all enjoy the list in my absense and I'll

As much as I would love to see Wil Wheaton and Mr. DiCaprio in
anything, I would much rather see two "out" performers tackle these
roles. The film itself is about courage and acceptence. I would like to
see Hollywood take a step towards these same attributes. As we all know,
America takes its lead from Hollywood. The sooner some of our closeted
performers start coming out of the closet, the faster we will see certain
attitudes change. If the "ten percent" rule applies in Hollywood, there
has to be more than just Ellen Degeneres and Carey Elwes.
As for making a sequel to the film, I am fearful that any attempt to
continue the story of Jamie and Ste would be ill-concieved. Perfection to
so hard to attain twice. I am just happy to replay BEAUTIFUL THING over
and over again in it's original inception. By the way...thanks again
Kiki.
As for the opening of THE BEAUTIFUL THING production in Australia, I
think that is just dandy. Kudos to you all for taking on such a lofty
endeavor. Can you tell me...is the play script much different from the
movie? Who holds the rights? I am interested in trying to put together a
production here in the little hayseed village I live in. These people
need a good shaking up. I directed a Harvey Fierstein play here a few
years ago and THE BALTIMORE WALTZ here last year...and boy, they sure
seemed to confused. I am a glutton for punishment. Stiil, a few people
always cry and tell me how moved they are. I think they are worth a
production of BEAUTIFUL THING.
Well, yes I know it has been a while since I posted on the
list...but I have been busy with a production of MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
that I toured around New York State in. I am glad to be able to
particiapte once again, and would specifically like to hear from anyone
on the list who also may direct in theater. It is a tough job, but worth
it. I just think that anyone who does, needs a support group.
Well, Happy Valentine's Day to you all. As much as I have decided I
hate that holiday, I suppose there is a reasonable core meaning to it
that allows me to enjoy its sentiment.
Always,

Hi everyone,
Sorry about the email silence but I've been having one or two problems
with my email account and have now beaten it into submission!
So you can all expect my rather unusual emails and ocassional fwds.
Mark Robinson asked if the play was very different to the film. Well
the only answer I have is yes it is. In the play there are only two
locations, the balcony of the block of flats and in Jamies bedroom.
This gives a very intimate feel which the film didn't have. In the film
it felt like Jamie and Ste were constantly looking over their shoulders
but in the play there is slightly more freedom for them to relax.
Also the cast is only 5 strong, there aren't the nosy neighbours or
the school friends, Leah's mum is only referred to. It has a very
different tone. The final scene is on the balcony without everyone
watching. This gives it a private and almost erotic feel to it, sadly
the reality of Thamesmead is that no one could really be gay and so
open about it without ending up in hospital.
Hope this comes part of the way to answering a few thoughts.
Speak to you soon!!

Dear Mark,
The play differs from the movie in many respects (only five characters for
one thing). In the States, you can obtain a copy of the play through The
Drama Book Shop in New York city. There was still one copy at A Different
Light (gay bookstore) the last time I looked as well.
As for the rights, contact:
William Morris Agency
31/32 Soho Square
London WIV 5DG
They are Jonathan Harvey's agents and administer the performance rights to
the play.

The Hollywood-don't-ask-don't-tell-just-act (and make that kiss

But here's a confession:
I saw "Love,Valour,Compassion!" at Berkeley Rep several months before the
film. At the time, I assumed that there was at least a 50/50 chance that
any or all of the performers were gay.
I saw the film a few months ago and assumed that there was a 5/95...1 in
20...er...(statistics, who needs em!)...that there wasn't much chance at
all of any of them being gay.
To this day I don't know the individual persuasions (sexual or otherwise)
of any of the performers. Never met em. What can I say, I'm a slave to
context. And assumptions, p.c. or otherwise, are assumptions. I feel so
dirty!
(I think that the actor who played the naked-apron-man character in the
Berkeley production might have been the waiter in "Jeffrey" (the film)
closing scene and it wouldn't surprise me if he was gay and is offered
supporting roles only instead of leads and he was GOOD as naked-apron-man,
not way the hell over the top and back again like J.A. - don't want to
hurt
anyone's feelings.)
Out actors in a sequel sounds good but personally, I use the concept of a
sequel simply as a device for thinking up cute couples, and wouldn't want
the elegant suspension of reality at the end of the film disturbed, ever.
Not even for my own selfish perposes!

I saw the play in New York 3 times (hee hee). Two of the times with Nathan
Lane ( a gay man) in the character of Buzz (the naked apron guy, as you
say). Jason Alexander (a straight man) in the film version was SEDATE in
his playing of the role compared to Nathan! With the exception of Nathan
Lane, all of the original Broadway cast members recreated their roles for
the film. At least one of them is Gay (and Out).

I really agree here. A sequel, unless pure fantasy, would have to go in a
direction that we may not want to see. For instance, what will Ronnie and
Trevor do when they find out Ste is Gay???? I don't want to think of the
beating he would get.

I know the sexual preference of only one of the actors in "Love, Valour,
Compassion!" and that is from an interview he granted. The man who
played the dancer (don't remember his hame) who liked to hang out naked
is most assuredly straight. Pity.

Also, did anyone happen to tape it so a picture can be posted for the
benefit of those who live outside the UK, or who just happened to miss
it?

Hi peeps,
With several comments about 'Love, Valor, Compassion' my curiosity and
interest was spiked by some binary postings in the newsgroup
alt.binaries.sounds.movies.
The only problem is, not all binary parts arrived where I am, and I can't
download them. Can someone help me out?
the files are:
lvc-bigqueen.wav
lvc-imp.wav
lvc-skinnydipping.wav
lvc-str8ppl.wav

Mark: The opening scene alone is worth approximately 3.9 - 4.3 miles and
it
is repeated later in the film so you must make your decision based on how
much you enjoy driving (twice) vs. viewing something quite yummy (twice).
I liked the film and rented it twice. It doesn't shred the structure of
the
play very much and there is some very nice acting in it.
Although I haven't used reel.com online for renting movies (I rent from
their "outlet" down the street from me @ $4.50 for 5 days), you might
consider it.
Eric - I have a hard time picturing someone less sensitive to ensemble
than
Jason Alexander was in the film but considering it was Nathan Lane, I can
see the possiblity! His performances are "forceful", I'll give him that...

Hi there
Jonathan Harvey has sent his other half to Sydney to see Beautiful Thing
tomorrow night (Wednesday 18 Feb). The play is going wonderfully and we've
had several standing ovations! I'm so excited.
Please send me and the cast some positive vibes between 8.00pm (GMT +

Cheers

Jean:
Thanks for the insights on L,V,C. It just became availible through
my video club, so I may just break down and pay the thirty bucks to buy
it. The play itself I have read three or four times and I am not quite
sure what I think. Terrence McNalley has such incredible ideas for
situations and characters, but the structure of the work never seems to
build anything. Many of his plays have this problem. His most poetic
work LIPS TOGETHER< TEETH APART is the best example of this. If you are
not familiar with this one, he targets homophobes in a house on fire
island. He sets up a great situatution and then isn't quite sure where to
take it.
Anyway, enough of my philosophy on McNalley. At least he writes
about the gay issues. I was wondering if anyone out ther can recommend
any decent gay films that I can keep an eye out for. Since I live in the
middle of nowhere, I do not have the luxerey of seeing them in the
theater but rather on home video. So far, the only enjoyable ones that I
have seen are JEFFREY, IT'S MY PARTY, MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO, and THE
BIRDCAGE. Of course BEAUTIFUL THING...but I guess that goes without
saying.
take care...
Mark
