Hey all,
Several more weeks worth of emails have been added to the archive; I am now up to
June 11 of 1997. I've also spruced up the index page a little, adding the dates each
archive page covers, and a graphic. I've also added the page to the BT web ring.
The archive is located at www.geocities.com/westhollywood/1159/archidx.html
Enjoy,
Keith
(P.S. This is being resent ot the NEW and IMPROVED BT list (Thanks Andre!) )

First of all, thanks so much to Andre for re-establishing the list!!!
You may not have realized (since I didn't tell you <G>) but today (26th)
is my birthday and finding all those BT posts was a great present. :)
Thanks to Andre, to Sandra and to Olaf Wall, my paper is now up on the
internet in English (mine), Spanish (Sandra's translation), Dutch
(Andre, of course) and German (Olaf.)
It will also be published (in English) this fall in an anthology
tentatively titled, "Proof of Things Queer."
I'll write more tomorrow, but it's late, I've had a busy day (including
university commencement, and a small party with some friends this
evening _and_ getting taken to dinner by a cute friend named Tony - ;) -
so I'm definitely a bit knackered. :) But so happy to have the list
back.
Gary
I believe Andre has all the translations on his Dutch BT page, but I've
also got them at

I am quite fond of Ste's character because he is the one that gets

finds more pleasure in books than in sports, and I only go out socially

This movie has made me very happy and struck a chord in my heart that I

I love that there are people out there that share this with me, and that
feel just as strongly about the movie.

Hello to everyone on the 'btlist' and a thankyou to Keith for the welcome.
A bit about myself first, my name is Graham but my friends call me Gray, I
am 30 years old, and live in England. Maybe I will reveal a bit more later
when I get ot know you all better.
I first watched BT in December of 1997, on Channel 4 Television, and have
been absolutely crazy about it ever since, I have videoed it of off the TV,
and have watched it at least twice a week, since that day.
Unfourtunately, I am unemployed and cannot get to the get togethers, (which
need money), and so I have joined a couple of BT lists, this being one of
them, it`s the next best thing as being there, right?
So if any of you want to mail me please do.
P.S. to kent for giving out the information about this list.

Graham,
Hello! and Welcome to the list! It has been a little quiet lately, what with the 3 weeks
with no list, I guess BT has slipped from people's minds a little (funny that).
As a way on introduction, I can tell you a little about myself, and what BT has meant to me.
I'm 30 years old, and up until I saw BT last May, was more or less completely closeted. I
had seen a trailer for BT in the theater, but didn't get to see it till I came across the box at
my local video store. As I sat watching it, I was completely overwhelmed. I had seen a few
gay-themed movies before, but they always seemed about a different world, or people
living lives so distant from mine as to be complete strangers. But with BT it was different.
It was the first movie that focused on love - simple, honest love. While there was tension
over the "what if someone finds out" parts of BT, it wasn't the focus, and the Dance scene at
the end only proves this. It made me realize that love and happiness were really possible in
the real world for gay people. It also made me for the first time think about coming out, and
start thinking about what it could mean to be in love. Love wasn't some remote concept
that only openly gay people living in San Francisco had - it could happen in any little
corner of the world.
Since then I have come out to a few close friends (most of who still are my friends) and
I have met so many more good friends through this list. In part, this has given me the
courage to finally accept myself, and others for who they are, and to be proud of it.
(Incidently, this weekend is the Annual Gay Pride festival here in Philadelphia, and I
am certainly going to be there! I went last year, and after the initial nervousness, ended
up having a really good time)

I did a lot of adult/professional theatre growing up and have always

Josh,
A big welcome to you as well! It's nice to know we're all out here somewhere (even in
cyberspace) Sorry to hear things didn't work out as well as you'd liked, but that's one of
the benefits of this list - there's always a shoulder to lean on you need one.
As I said earlier, BT has forced me to open myself up to others, and the possibility of a
relationship, but that has also opened me up to the possibility of being hurt, I guess. Before
I figured if I just keep to myself, and don't love others, I can't be hurt. While that's
partially true, it also means I can't ever be happy. So now, while I have been happier in
general lately, I have also been experiencing the pains of love as well. <sigh>
I still think books can make the best friends (present company excepted, of course) though.
They never judge, and are always there for you.
(ok, so I'm a little blue now - does it show?)

Is there any setting with the btlist that controls who a reply goes to? Right now, if I
"reply" tp a bt post, the reply defaults to only the sender, not the list, so I'm afraid some

Subject: $list Scott Neal Interview
Precedence: bulk
Hi Folks
Here is a copy of the Scott Neal Interview that I posted to the
newsgroup while the archive was down. There have been some interesting
thoughts from the users of the newsgroup. What do you guys think?
> See ya
>From 'Eva' magazine (March 1998)
Sex shocker! Scott's gran turned grey after seeing him having sex with
another man.
Hunky Scott Neal gave his gran the shock of her life when she saw him
bonking another man.
Before landing the role of PC Luke Ashton in "The Bill," Scott starred
in a raunchy film called "Beautiful Thing" in which he simulated sex
with another man.
He was 17 at the time and was horrified when he had to sit and watch it
with his parents and his gran.
Says Scott: "They were against me taking the role and it was very
embarrassing watching it with them.
"I was cringing in anticipation of the big moment and I'll never forget
gran's face when she saw me on screen with no clothes on making love to
a man!
"Mum and dad looked a bit grim-faced but I looked across at gran and she
seemed to be in a state of shock with her mouth open.
"I started to get the giggles and couldn't stop. I was wondering
whether she'd ever recover, but afterwards she told me that I'd done
very well."
Since the movie was shown, Scott, 19, has been chatted up by dozens of
gay guys.
"A lot of blokes have tried it on with me," he says.
"They chat me up and flirt and a few have even said they love me. It
doesn't worry me. I'm straight, but it's no worse than being chatted up
by a woman that you don't fancy."
Scott says that women are often a lot scarier than gay men.
"Some of the women I meet are very upfront and confident -- they don't
mince their words. The gay guys who've hit on me have been a lot less
pushy."
Scott is single at the moment and plans to stay that way for the next 16
years!
"I don't want to get serious with anyone until I'm 35," he explains.
"I'm young and I want to play the field and sleep with lots of women.
Relationships tie you down and there are lots of things I want to do
with my life yet."

Hiya peeps!
The renewed list has been up only a day or so, I'm still changing the
configuration and ppl are posting to it already with increasing frequency.
I'm happy to tell you that the configging has finally reached the final stage,
and nothing important will change now.
I just now discovered a glitch in the subject section of the config, which has
been fixed, also the tagline has been reduced to a one-liner, since we all
know who's responsible for the darn list, so I removed the admin tagline
alltogether.
Thank you all for bearing with me, and not complaining about things changing
sometimes even by the minute...
I can assure you that there will be no need to once again reset your e-mail
filters to forward the list-messages to your list-folder (at least not after
you have done so for this message), and am happy to tell you that we now have
79 subscribers, which means an increase of about 4 each day. If we're going
to keep this up, we'll be at 100 subscribers within 5 days from now!
I have taken the liberty of disabling the 'who btlist' command completely, to
prevent ppl on the list from being found out. Only admin can see who's on the
list, to others only the posters' addresses will be revealed. 'read-only'
subscribers will remain anonymous.
I have added the 'intro' and 'info' messages on majordomo. ('intro btlist' and
'info btlist') Info will be a public command, and intro will be for list
members only, and will automagically be sent to new subscribers. If you're
curious as to what these messages say, just send the commands to
(put them on a single line in the _body_ of the message)
and the listserver will send them to ya asap.)
Well, I guess since there will not be made any major changes to the config
anymore, there will be no need for me to take up precious listspace any
longer. the only ADMIN messages you will see from now on, will be stats,
which I intend to publish only when there's something interresting to announce.
Happy list'ing!
Andre.

As a quick refresh, my name is Hannes  (AKA Hal), 21 years old. I'm

I saw BT last year in July (or was it August?). I ended up going to see the
movie, um, quite a few times more.. Let's just say that the cinema didn't
struggle to pay the rent that month ;)
Through that I met dear Kent when I posted a distressed posting on the
BT-Newsgroup (I couldn't see any postings, so I thought I was alone :( )
That's how I ended up on this list (which is now the third move the BT-List has
made!). I ended up taking about thirteen other people to go see Beautiful Thing,
and they all loved it!
Lots of things in my life have changed because of that feeling you get when you
watch the movie (every person on this list will know the feeling, because that's
why you're here).

Josh, I agree. I think the writer was stretching. I mean, I don't doubt
that Scott's gran was aghast at the fact that her grandson woke up nude
against another boy's backside. Actually, it could have been his editors
stretching with the SEX SCANDAL angle. In that case, don't trust editors,
either. I'm sure it was the shock factor of having this Bill actor
admitting his "shady" past.
There are other BT articles that, on the surface, were all and good but had
problems. I think it was the XY one, on Eric's site, that was riddled with
errors. Misspelled Glen's name. Had "Make Your Own Kind of Music" as the
finale song, or something like that. Damn copy editors. Don't trust them,
either!
While I'm at it, thanks to the person who maintains the email archive. It's
great to reminisce. But I really sound like a geek in my old postings.
And Josh, I didn't mind your html mailings, but I sympathize with people who
don't have html ready email programs.
BTW, all the diehards who have survived the three email lists know me,
probably all too well, but I'm Jeff. Jeffo on IRC. I'm a week away from
turning 34. I'm a regional news editor for a "large" newspaper in the
Midwestern United States, Omaha, Neb., actually. I saw BT in March 1997 and
have been obsessed with it since, so much so that I made a pilgrimage to
Thamesmead (much as a Muslim must go to Mecca once in his or her life) last
October with several others. I live life vicariously through BT. I think
it makes up for the innocence I wish I'd had in my teen years and in my
later gay adult life.
Perhaps, if people are patient, we can all reintroduce ourselves. I
wouldn't want this email list to get the bad rep the first one did, which
had people quitting in droves because there were 40 emails a day! But what
the heck.

Jeff,
Good to hear from you again! (Weren't quite sure if you were still with us or not!)
As "the person who maintains the email archive" I'm glad to see people are enjoying it. It
is taking a lot of time to put it together, as it's mostly a manual process, and I was ready to
give up this past weekend with the list seemingly gone forever, but with the list back,
and things moving again, I will definitely keep chugging away at it. The counters are
always going up, so I guess someone is visiting it! Your thanks are appreciated!
And no, you don't sound like a geek in your old postings. I find it so nice to reminisce as I
go through the old posts, and see the various topics have come up, and people's various
opinions, etc. With few exceptions, every email to the list had something significant to
contribute to the ongoing saga that is BT and how it has affected all our lives, and our
relationships.

Hi all!
This is Tory... back from the dead... sort of! for some reason I lost
touch with the second list sometime in October?? something like that.. and
life was just too insane to sit down and deal with it then... it still
hasn't exactly settled down, but I'm starting to have a bit more time to
spend reading my mail and to be on IRC. I do like the fact that this list
is now up and running!
As for Jeff's Comments about the first list, and ppl dropping like flies
because of TOO MANY MESSAGES!!! I think I agree... this is a wonderful
place to share what BT means to us, but most people don't have time to
spend an hour wading through e-mails everyday... luckily... if I remember
correctly... most of the problems with too many e-mails stemmed from a
couple of people who were sending 4-5 e-mails a *day* continually...If we
can just all manage to remember not to hog the conversation...and make
sure that our own contributions don't overwhelm the server, everything
should be just fine!
And for Keith, I'm one of the first list-members... and I have a bad habit
of saving all my messages....you'll have to figure out how to separate
my archives, and how to get a hold of them, but if you want them, they're
all yours!

Now that the list is back, it's probably time for me to re-intro myself,
especially since it seems we've got some recent members.

I discovered BT in fall of 1996, then immediately sought on internet
info, ending up joining the initial list, IRC channel and so on.
As many of you know, BT ended up leading to a paper I presented last
month at the Popular Culture Association meeting in Orlando at Walt
Disney World. It's called, "A 'Beautiful Thing' on the Internet:
Building Gay Community in Cyberspace." Most all of references for the
paper are from e-mail or postings to this list or web site guest books
about the impact BT had on so many of us.
The paper will be published this fall in an anthology entitled, "Proof
of Things Queer."
You can find out more personal info about me at
but I also have a page of gay web links
by category at  and I
maintain two local web sites. One is for the Lambda Group, a sort of
"umbrella" organization for local gay and lesbian support groups. It's
at  and I also do the local PFLAG
(Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) chapter web page.
The URL for that is
The BT paper can be found (sorry if I'm posting this a lot, but I think
we've got a lot of new - and returning folks from the first list -
members.)
The editor of the forthcoming anthology, Justin Chin (whose writings can
be found, for example, in Men on Men 5) has asked me to write a
"postscript" about reaction to the paper, so I'd be happy to hear any of
your responses to it, or responses from the new folks about how BT
affected you. I can then consider adding some of these to future
revisions of the paper.
One final request: I was updating the Skippy's Queer World links page
last night and realized I need to get URLs for the several BT pages that
aren't listed there. I also have a separate section of the site for gay
guys' personal web pages. Please contact me if with any sites you think
I should add to Skippy's Queer World or the Kweer Kennel.
Oh, and if you want to know about where I work, check out
- I did the original design and some of our
students did the update.
