Not strictly BT related, but has anyone heard any news about a project
involving Jonathan and the Pet Shops Boys? I believe that the project was
a musical. If I remember correctly, talk was that it would be gay related
and revolve around life at a disco (or something like that). I'd also be
interesed in know about any work that Jonathan has produced since BT.

On the note of reintroducing ourselves, here's me:
My name is Steve(or Sven, whichever's more comfortable). I first saw BT
around October 97 and immediately started having late charges. One of these
days I'm just going to break down and buy the video.
As is the case with everyone here, BT changed my whole outlook on gay love and
the possibility of its existence without sex being an ever-present part of the
relationship. Having a lesbian sister and a bisexual brother, these points
were very important for me to realize when viewing my siblings in a *family*
matter.
After seeing the movie I right away turned to the friendly neighborhood of the
world to find more info on my two favorite leading men. Rather disappointing
to find out they were straight(they were such a perfect couple! *sob*). On
that note, has anyone noticed that about 80 percent of gay roles are played by
straight actors/actresses? Granted that it's a dangerous world for even stars
to proclaim their sexuality, but it just seems... wrong to me. Maybe it's
just me?
Anyway, welcome to all the new members. I'm what's known as a "lurker." I
don't post very often, but thoroughly enjoy reading all the conversations.
Stay Beautiful,
Steve

Hello everybody!!
First of all, I want to welcome Josh, Juliet and Andrew to the new list
and I want to thank Andre for putting us all together again. BT is
indestructible!! It has survived three lists!! Also, a very warm welcome
back to Tory!! We missed ya, old friend!! And it's so comforting to know
there are so many new people joining the list. BT's spell is everywhere!
I'm sorry for writing such a short post, but we're having some changes in
our flat. We're changing some pieces of furniture and the place is still
a mess! I hope this weekend everything will be alright again and I'll be
able to dedicate more time to answer the reawakened list. (I know some
people complained about the excessive number of posts, but I can only
revel in it. MORE!!!! I'll never have enough of it!)
Take care.

Well, and didn't *I* just take a badly-timed moment to try "a day away
from my 'Net addiction"-- so many mails on both lists popped up and in--
wow!
Welcome to Josh, Andrew, Juliet, Graham; welcome back Tory!
I'll do the Intro bit, for the courtesy of our new emailmates. My name
is Kent Roberts, I am 44. My lover of the past 10+ years, Joe, and I,
live in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn (where they made "Saturday Night Fever").
We saw BT on video in June of '97 (I was enraptured, euphoric, really
transported by the tingling joy it gave me)-- and since then, my life
has been improved, but not primarily by the movie *per se*. Rather, it
is because of the friends I have met and made, from the BT Newsgroup
last Summer (first and foremost Hannes, then our Tasmanian Devil, Andy
S., and "Lady of Spain" Sandra-- who generously gave me hundreds of
emails to read when there was no Archive of anything, neither the one
Keith is creating, nor the Archive of Newsgroup posts now available at
Dejanews), from Chris' mailing list, from the IRC Channel to the
"bt-stories" list-- well, such a *wonderful* group of people, so nice,
so warm, so thoughtful, so funny! I am on the list(s) because I enjoy
getting all these "friendly" letters, sharing our love of all things
"BT" and not coincidentally, things of meaning in our lives-- (gay and
straight)-- and I'm with Sandra (always! :)) : the more the merrier!
Joe and I plan to be going (eagerly! "at last"-ly!) to meet the other
fans gathered in London in June, virtual friendships made that much more
real.
Kent
Always glad to be part of this list, whatever its name!
P.S. Thanks so much, Andre, for starting it up this time!

Hi listers,
My name is Andy, and live in Australia. I've was a big fan of Beautiful
Thing about 10 months before I actually saw it. (hard to believe i know!)
The film has given me a more positive outlook on life. I now feel confident
with my sexuality and reassured that life and those around me are not
really out to ridicule me.
You can find out more about me and what I like to do at my web page.

I finally bought my own copy of the video recently. I was on holiday in
Sydney and walked into the Bookshop in Darlinghurst, and while it wasn't on
display, I knew they had copies under the counter (BT is not for sale in
Australia). So, being thrilled as I was, I parted with $60 (it wasn't
cheap). That evening, in the same street I found out that a CD Shop sold BT
for half the price. Oh well, at least I found a copy after searching for
months.

While I was in Sydney, I had the opportunity to see Michael Darragh's
production of Beautiful Thing. The actor who played Ste was gay, but the
yummy actor playing Jamie was straight. Which got me thinking, just how
hard would it have been for a str8 guy to kiss a gay guy...with an audience
looking on?
Take care,
Andy.

It would be great to hear about a sequel to beautiful thing in the

things. Besides the stereotypical hollywood/media generated releases.
Well thats all for now. Best wishes to all of you.....be puka!

Beautiful BT fans,
The BT-Stories Fan Faction Archive has just been updated with three new
offerings.
* Sandra has written a very clever story called The Time of Truth. It's so
good you'll want to read it twice!
* Kent continues to deliver his steamy stories. Wet part 4 is now online
with part 5 already in the wings.
* Jean has finally presented her much awaited Gravesend story where we get
to meet Ste's aunt. This is only the first five parts, and I'm told there
are many more moving chapters to come.
Thanks to those who have already voted for BT-Stories at the Totally Cool
Queer Site Awards. If you haven't voted yet, you have until the end of
July. Go to:

You'll find BT-Stories listed under Entertainment in the Community section.
Due to continueing interest in the controversial artical on Scott Neal,
titled "Sex Shocker", I've decided to keep it online for another week or
two. For those who haven't seen it (there can't be that many left), it's a
152k colour JPEG image, and features an extremely handsome photo of Scott.
As for the article itself...it's mostly crap!

A great movie on the order of BT is "Maurice" based on the book of the
same name by
E.M.Forster. It stars Hugh Grant, James Wilby and RUPERT GRAVES. It's a
period piece; pre-WW I England. It's a Merchant-Ivory film.
The best love scene bar none (whether gay or straight) in any film is
that between Wilby and Graves. The latter is literally swept off his
feet!

Thanks David for bringing the movie "Maurice" to everyone's attention. I
am even older than you are, but I have to say that I found this movie to
make quite a statement. The times in which it was set, were even more
oppressive and rigid regarding homosexuality and yet are as current
today as then. The fact that the Hugh Grant character has a nervous
breakdown because of his sexuality and the consequences it may bring to
his life; the subsequent subjugation of his true feelings, and the
revulsion attending the discovery of Lord Risley's arrest for groping a
man in public, are evidence that although things change, the more they
remain the same. The passion portrayed by James Wilby and Rupert Graves,
is as valid as the love felt between Jamie and Ste. I also heartily
recommend this movie to anyone who has not seen it.

Hi Listers
The recent discussions regarding gay-themed films is quite interesting. I am
currently working on a film script about a 17 year old boy growing up in
provincial Queensland (think Muriel's hometown in Muriel's Wedding). The
setting is a redneck, surfie town where homosexuality is very foreign. "It
only happens in Sydney" is a common thought held by these misguided fools.
So far it is a fairly brutal and confronting film with just the right amount
of humour. The film's central character is forced to come out alone (there's
no Ste in this picture) and the principal relationships are with his best
female and best male friend.
Also, look out for a fantastic new film from Australia called "Head On"
which has been selected for Cannes. Based on the excellent novel "Loaded" by
my pal Christos Tsiolakas it is about a Greek Australian gay teenager in
Melbourne. This film will shock a lot of people but is nevertheless an
utterly fantastic look at gay youth.

If it's going to run for a couple of weeks, this could be something I
might be able to finesse. I hadn't budgeted for any vacation time during
my one week break between May term and summer term (May 24-31) but I
could likely convince myself to make an exception <G> and book Amtrak
round trip from here to Chicago, especially if there'd be someone
willing to split costs of accomodations in Chicago.

Hey all,
Saw the comments on "Maurice" as a referrant to BT. I will agree with what was
said. The relationship between Maurice and Alex (Wilby & Graves) is very
positive within its very constrained atmosphere. Yet, for me, it had the same
effect as BT has for many including myself. I love both these films, for they
speak of the valid and beautiful love between men. There's not enough of that
around, sadly enough.
I also take this opportunity to greet all the BT listers!!!!! Great group of

likely, I will have to go pretty close to as soon as it opens as I am a

may be able to also catch up with you guys if you decide to go at a later
date. (And see it twice! LOL)
Anyway, I will be calling the Company tomorrow to see if they can work us some
kind of deal, I mean we are the reason it is so big! Actually, I think it is
the realness of the movie that makes it so big--we are only a part in it.
So, if you all would suggest some dates to me, as soon as I get play dates to

"Maurice" was also good for having a positive ending (the relationship
between Wilby and Graves' characters) after portraying the frustrating
relationship between Maurice and Hugh Grant's character. It's no wonder
that E. M. Forster wanted the book published only _after_ his death. In
his time there was no place for "happy endings" to gay stories.

My only possible time would be during that last week in May. I'm off
from school Monday, May 25 until the following Sunday. Then on June 1
it's time for summer session. May term and summer teaching are extra
money so I can't miss them since, among other things, they would help
pay for a trip like this. That week I'm free would also be the first
full-week run of the play after its previews.
It's too much of a killer drive from here to Chicago, but Amtrak leaves
just after midnight from nearby Newbern, TN and gets into Chicago about
9 a.m. Since it departs for back home at 8 p.m., I'd have to spend the
night in Chi-town, which wouldn't be bad since I could use the next day
to take my Bloomingdale's and Neiman-Marcus credits cards on a visit to
their respective homes. <G>

Michael, it's about time you poked your head back into the world of BT
fans. I was so thrilled to see your posts appear. Lots of people have been
asking about you. You seem to have another new addy ...now wonder we
couldn't trace you.

> Who do you think would make the best "Sandra"?: Denise Roberts (GP)
>Tracy >Mann (Prisoner/Cell Block H, Skirts, Sweet n Sour) Colette Mann
>(Prisoner/Cell >Block H) Anne Tenney (A Country Practise, The Castle)
>Kate Raison (E Street, >Pacific Drive)
It's a shame I'm not 'up' on my knowledge of Australian actresses. I
remember Tracy Mann in Sweet n Sour, but I can't remember who Anne Tenney
played in ACP. Is Colette Mann the one that has a guest appearance on Good
Morning Australia each week? I don't know Denise Roberts (if GP is a ch9
show, I never watch it...it's the opposition station to the one I work
for!) and I've never seen E Street or Pacific Drive so I can't give you an
opinion of Kate Raison either. I guess I just don't watch enough Aussie tv
shows. :(
> Fiona, who played her in the original production, is no longer available
>so >we're attracting a "name" actress. Casting for Sandra, Ste and Tony

Aaawww! :(
Damn shame Fiona couldn't stay on, she's a very professional actress. I
thought she was by far the best on stage when I saw it. Good to see Simon
is staying on (i'm miffed as to why a str8 guy wants to come back for
seconds!! ;).

>And FYI, Beautiful Thing will be at Melbourne's Universal Theatre in
>November >- which is a bit closer for you and your friends.
Wow! Best news I've had in a long while, and November is a good time. I
usually spent a weekend in Melbourne around that time for a 'end of year'
treat (and to do some early xmas shopping).
Are you still doing "Birdy"? Does Simon play Birdy? And if so does he do
the 'naked' thing like in the film?
Mmmmm. I can only imagine. Where are the pictures? ;)
Andy.

BT Guys/Gals,
I too would be interested in seeing the play and perhaps having dinner with
you all. I live in Milwaukee, 90 miles away from Chicago, and could drive
down just about any time you all suggest. However, as luck would have it,
I will be in New York City from 5/29 through 6/1, sooooo I (and my lover, a
BT fan, but not a fan-atic like myself) could do it on Memorial Day Weekend
(5/23-25) or tuesday (5/26) or wednesday (5/27).
Sorry to clutter up the e-waves with this, but I wanted all others to know
that there were another couple of interested American BT-ers wanting to
meet everyone else for the play. Thanks to Donald for offering to be the
arranger.

this one!!!
BT-Stories today received notification that it has won a Rainbow Award for

the award we've been listed in the Teens section of www.gayamerica.com.

Yes, Simon plays Birdy aged 16 years and has a scene involving full frontal
nudity if it matters. It plays in January at Studio Theatre, Newtown. I'm
directing it as well.
Why is Simon playing a "gay" role? Because he gets paid a shit load of money
for it and gets national exposure as an actor in a very good professional
show. He is indeed a sensible boy with a lot of potential.
He will also be cast in The Jungle which I'm directing for the UK in May
1999. Then he can go and do whatever he likes. But I really do enjoy working
with him. He's a very talented and intuitive actor.
Cheers

I don't know if I'm be really obvious by saying this, but did you know
Jonathan Harvey appears in the film version of BT? He plays Petra (guy with
the broken leg and Liverpudlian accent) in The Gloucester scene.
I work for The First National Bank of Chicago in their London office and may
be visiting Chicago sometime this month/early June on business. It would be
fabulous to meet up with the crowd going to see BT on the stage - would
somebody keep me informed? Thanks.

Neil,
I will most certainly keep you informed. Right now I have a call into the box
office who is supposed to be getting back with me ASAP about doing a BT Fan-
club deal. I am also going to try to arrange something along the lines of us
getting to meet the cast and crew--a back-stage pass if you will. They were
not totally closed to this idea so keep your fingers croosed and let's all
hope for the best!
Will keep you informed...

Dear Neil
And the guy sitting next to Jonathan, closest to the stage, is Richard
Foord, JH's boyf of many, many years.
The irony of Jonathan's cameo character is it could not be more far removed
than what he is really like.

I can only hope we can make this happen anytime during that last week of
May. It's my only time to get away and it would also be early in the run
of the play, so things would still be quite fresh for the cast.
Thanks, Donald, for all your inquiries and work.
