Hee hee. I'd make fun of Eric's age, but... he's not far ahead of me.
Funny, I remember how all Americans were supposed to learn the metric system
in time for the Bicentennial. I think it was our own way of celebrating
independence and never learning the darn system!

As a matter of fact, Jeff, two days ago (last Wednesday night) I was on
the IRC Channel for almost two hours. I've connected a few dozen times
since I finally figured out how to find BT's Channel, almost three months
ago. I'm controlling myself a bit now (coz of last astronomical bill, ya
know...), but I plan to connect again this weekend. It seems we just
missed each other...
Take care.

Hi,
Using your irc client, connect to one of the many DalNet servers (info at
www.dalnet.com) and join #beautiful-thing (from the command line that would
be: "/join #beautiful-thing" leave out the quotation marks.) For more info
on irc see http://www.mirc.com
I hope that is not confusing.

OK, I now have the stageplay in front of me. Jamie says 'THE' words when
he's coming out to Sandra and she's telling him:
Sandra: (...) There's me going to bed of a night feeling sorry for ya,
coz you had to share a bed with Ste. And... and all the time you were...
you were doing a seventy minus one...
Jamie: What?
Sandra: Think about it.
Jamie tuts.
Sandra: Do you talk to him?
Jamie: Me and him's the same.

God, those are the most beautiful words I've ever heard!! And from
a fifteen year old boy!!!! That's the essence of what Jamie and Ste truly
are: ONE, in EVERY sense of the word!!!
Take care.

Sandra. (Who's floating right now...) :))

P.S. Eric, thank you for the explanation. I'm almost 5'2", OK!! But I
already knew one inch are 2.54 centimetres. And I'll never tell what
motivated me to learn how to count in inches!!!!!!

Okay, let me get down to business. I have been watching Beautiful Thing
as much as I possibly can, while studying for final exams, and I have
noticed something, and am wondering what everyone else thinks?
Exactly what is Sandra's sexual preference? She dates Tony, but when
leaving the bar and finding Ste crying, she gives Louise a glance as to
check her out as she walks away! And again at the end with Leah, she
seems to have taken the Dyke thing to an extreme! Is this why she goes
through boyfriends quickly b/c she in not happy with them, or what???
Has anyone else had this thought, or was it just me??? And why when Ste
brought Jamie the hat, did Sandra look outside the door to see if anyone
was watching, if she didn't already think Jamie & Ste had something
going on, then why care who is outside watching???
I know I can count on you guys for great answers!!!

Without knowing Jonathan's intentions, I can only say I think Sandra is NOT
gay. Nothing to indicate it appears in the play or the published
screenplay. In the film, a LOT of subtext has been added by (I assume) the
actors, and probably the director as well. And speaking of subtext, a
wealth of it was added to the film by the set decorator. The apartments are
full of little things that reveal character. Jamie's room has all kinds of
stuff in it, and Ste's room (and wardrobe at one point) indicate he is a
big fan of the Arsenals Football club (although not a word of that is
mentioned). It is interesting to see how a film is molded and characters
are formed by little things that do not appear in the actual writing.

Oh, I'd say a few hundred people at least have had that thought! ;-)

Let's face it, Sandra is a fairly nosey neighbor. Who knows exactly why she
looked out there? She may have been checking for Ronnie or Trevor. I
seriously doubt she had any inkling at all that something was going on
between the two. Otherwise, she would not have been so shocked to find that
Gay Times in Jamies room!

Although it has never been blatantly indicated in the film, I have had
the same impression that Jonathan had about Sandra perhaps being gay.
Perhaps it would be a decent explanation about why she has problems with
commitment. Or why she continues to "go through" men.
I am also under the impression that the lesbian Leah describe's in
Sandras arms at the end of the movie, sort of fits Sandra's description.
This s pure speculation, but in some ways I can see it.
The thing that makes it realistic, is that we never really know. I think
that Sandra is of a generation where exploring homosexuality is much less
of an option. Maybe that is where a BEAUTIFUL THING sequel should take
things. Sandra does have the most loose ends at the end of the film...and
I agree that her sexuality s one of those loose ends.

I've been asking myself that question too for some time and haven't come up
with an answer either.
Other clues are that just before Sandra gives Louise the look you talk
about, they kiss eachother goodbye, which is quite odd if you realise that
they are colleages and see each other almost every day. And then the way
Louise and Sandra react when Jamie asks if they would like to tag along to
the Gloucester. Louise gives Sandra a strange look, they burst out laughing
and Sandra says to Louise that she'll never have grandchildren. Louise
takes it very lightly, IMO. And both immediately know what type of pub the
Gloucester is, but that may not be so strange (I think a majority of the
Dutch know the iT, at least by name (it is the major gay-disco in
Amsterdam). And then of course the dancing-scene at the end, where Louise
stands aside, with a look of approval..
But if Sandra isn't straight, it is only hinted at. I've watched the film a
couple of times with this thought in mind, but I don't think there is any
conclusive evidence to sustain it..
(Which, IMO, is one of the things that make it so great!)
Regards,
Pepijn

Okay, here I go again!
As I watch the movie more and more, I have the increasing desire to have

sweatshirt.
Now here is my question: Does anyone else on the list think it would be
cool to try and get some of these shirts made for everyone of the list
who wants to buy one? And I wonder how much it might cost?
I also thought they could be done with beautiful thing on the back, or

If anyone thinks this is a good idea, let me know, and if you have a

Hi,
Having a shirt the way it is in the film would probably be OK, but putting
"Beautiful Thing" anywhere on it might be a copyright infringement, if any
were to sell them. The school name, BTW, is CROSSNESS, and seems to have a
series of "X"'s across it. BUT, they may be two rows of "V"'s!

8. Favorite line from Beautiful Thing: Too many... but I guess the line with
Jamie crying in bed as his says to his mom "...there are some things that are

Hi Jonathan
>Exactly what is Sandra's sexual preference?
She's straight.
> She dates Tony, but when leaving the bar and finding Ste crying, she
gives Louise a glance as to check her out as she walks away!
Women often admire and look at other womens' bodies in a non-sexual way.
Whereas if a guy does that to another guy he's considered gay. The
devise is used in the film to help support Sandra's surprise when she
discovers Jamie might be gay. ie she thinks nothing of two people of
same sex sharing glances or sharing beds top to toe.
> And again at the end with Leah, she seems to have taken the Dyke thing
to an extreme!
I don't think it's extreme - she's having fun and so is Leah. Once
again, women can joke about Lesbianism with other women without being
serious or being taken seriously.
> Is this why she goes through boyfriends quickly b/c she in not happy
with them, or what???

If you've read the play, you'll learn that Sandra's last boyf beat her.
Besides she has only had three other boyfriends, Richard the barman (who
beat her), Colin the Barber and Alfie the long-distance lorry driver.
For a woman of 35 I don't think that's a lot of boyfriends.
> And why when Ste brought Jamie the hat, did Sandra look outside the
door to see if anyone was watching, if she didn't already think Jamie &
Ste had something going on, then why care who is outside watching???
Because people are nosey. Also security is low on a housing estate so
it's probably habit to check the landing. Remember, as she is a Barmaid,
Sandra is quite an influential person in this environment. She is in a
position to hire people (and there'd be plenty who'd need a job) and she
is also privy to a lot of housing estate gossip.
>I know I can count on you guys for great answers!!!

I hope these help.
Cheers
MICHAEL

Hi all
Well, the casting for "Ste" and "Tony" was yesterday and I am happy to
say that I have found a Ste. His name is Brendan Powell and is quite a
lad.
Simon, who plays "Jamie", said he could easily fall in love with this
Ste. I'll post a headshot of Brendan in the next few days.
Tony is still uncast as yet.
Cheers and love
MICHAEL
PS - this headshot is of me!!!

Gosh! What a confused lad. I thought you said he wasn't gay. Oh, I see,
only the character he plays is gay. Eh????? Now I'm confused! ;)
Have you found a new Sandra yet? After a bit more thought I think I like
Colette Mann out of the ones you mentioned. But the test is *on* the
casting couch, as they say, not that you'd know what to do with her there!
;)))
>PS - this headshot is of me!!!
Nice! I liked to one of you in the BT program too, did you have shorter
hair then?
Andy.

Andy
I had my hair pretty short for the programme photo. I like that pic too, but
in some ways it's a little too "spunky b&w studio shot". The other is more
natural.
We should finalise our Sandra this week ... very exciting

Subject: btlist: Can I give some answers???
Date: Mon, 11 May 1998 07:40:30 +0000

Hi Jon (and everyone else of course)
I just thought I'd add my introduction to the others you've had. This
is actually my first post to the main list, although I've been member
of the BRILLIANT story list for a couple of months now. It's mainly
due to Kent who's already introduced himself that I'm here now so blame
him. (Hi Kent how ya doing, only kidding if ya hadn't guessed) So
without further ado here are the answers to those posing questions of
yours.
1. Name: Gavin
2. Age: 22
3. Birthday: 2nd of November (1975)
4. Where do you live: England, Southampton
5. Favorite movie: Do I state the obvious here, or do I risk some
other suggestions. Well of course you could guess I love BT why else
would I be here writing this now eh. My other favorites are My Own
Private Idaho, Stand By Me and anything Sci-fi really.
6. Favorite TV show: At the moment The Bill but only when you know
who's on it. My favorites of all time are Fawlty Towers, Absolutely
Fabulous and Black Adder
7. Favorite scene in Beautiful Thing (and why): The Peppermint Lotion
scene, because it's so brave of Jamie and so touching that I just can't
help crying whenever I see it.
8. Favorite line from Beautiful Thing: "Apparently"
9. Favorite actors: Glen and Scott obviously, goes without saying
doesn't it (or not) but apart from them. John Thaw, Alan Rickman, Tom
Cruise, Harrison Ford.
10. Favorite actresses: Joanna Lumley, Juliet Stevenson, Helen Mirren
11. Favorite character from Beautiful Thing (and why): I can Identify
so much with Jamie, but I fancy Ste more.
12. Would you be interested in seeing the play in Chicago: I would
love too but can't get the time off work to travel over at the moment.
13. How many times have you seen the movie??: 50+
14. Your nicknames: Gav (only to my friends though) and gml on IRC
15. Hair Color: Light brown
16. Eye Color: Blue
17. Height & Weight: 6 foot 3, too much
18. School atttending/attended: Southampton Institute of Higher
Education.
19. Favourite thing to do: Play Table Tennis, Tennis and mess about
with Computers.
20. What computer and internet browser you are using: (home) Pentium
75 and IE4 (work) Pentium 133 and IE4.
Hope I haven't bored ya too much, and thank you Jon for asking the
questions because I was interested to know who was on the list as well.
Take care, all of you,
Gavin XXX.
