I was going to make only one T-Shirt for me to wear when I go to the
Thamesmead tour in June.
It will have the picture of Jamie and Ste looking over the side of the
walkway. That should be OK don't you think?

Would anyone be interested in a gathering of BT listers who can make it to
Chicago on June 6 and/or June 7? A night on the town and dinner. Oh, and I
guess we'll see "Beautiful Thing" while we're there.
Eric Perkins and I have set up our flights and such. It would be great to
meet others within reasonable driving and flying distances of the Windy

It's the weekend before the BT meeting in Thamesmead. Perhaps this would
be a bit less expensive for many Americans.

Hi Gav
I'm with Demon Internet. It's £10+VAT per month, 5 meg free web space,
unlimited email addresses, your own virtual URL (see mine below), and they
have the full listing of newsgroups which many ISPs don not provide. They
also have a dedicated 45 MB link to the States which makes it quicker when
accessing American sites.
Good luck!

If I go it all, it will have to be the previous weekend as summer school
courses and church conferences take up that first weekend in June.
But if anyone is interested in going on Thursday, Friday or Saturday

Anyway, it looks great so now I'll have to stop on the way home to get a

Hi Listers,
Here are just a few tid-bits I came across this week that are BT related in
a small way...
*Anita Roddick, who founded the BodyShop (you know, that place that sells
Peppermint Foot Lotion) has stepped down as chief executive, and will join
her husband as co-chairman.
*"Serious Police Work", an Australian fan newsletter for "The Bill" reports
that Scott Neal had three previous appearances in The Bill, the first at
the age of 12, that makes him a veteran! These guest appearances included
parts as a heroin addict and a suspect in a mugging.
And before I sign off..a quick plug for the BT Fan Fiction Archive, which
has been updated today with some brilliant new stories. One of our new
writers, Laura, has written an exceptional piece called "Walking Home" It
takes place after the scene where Leah has just told Jamie and Ste that
Trevor knows and then Ste tells Jamie to leave him alone and storms off to
have a think by the bridge._ Laura's story goes to the core of what Ste's
thoughts are as he contemplates his future. A great read.
Oh, and while you're there, please excuse the mess! The site has been
winning awards hand over fist this past week or two and the poor html
editor is a little confused! :)
Andy.

I'm not sure that we are not MEANT to know what is shared between them, but
it isn't important what they say. It is totally inaudible and unscripted,
in any case.
MY question is: What is the name of that film that Jamie is watching on the
Telly near the beginning of the movie??? It is not mentioned in the script
or the credits at the end of the picture. In the screenplay, it is referred
to as an old "weepy."

It must have been _old_ because otherwise it would have been credited,
so it likely was already in public domain. Yet I really would like to

Of course, anything one might say here is pure speculation, as Jonathan
does not tell us what Ste is going to do. Legally, I doubt that he could
just leave home and move in with Sandra and Jamie. Even if he could, does
Sandra want the two boys living together in her house? Doin' the seventy

Jonathan gave us a fantasy ending that doesn't hold up to close scrutiny.
As you say, Ronnie and Trevor are sure to find out that Ste is queer, and

The new aspect for this I am thinking about is the "does Sandra mind"
angle. Does she mind that her son is doing "the seventy minus one"? I
think she faces the reality of Jamie's being gay and therefore she
accepts the fact that Jamie and Ste are likely to be sexually intimate
(and Sandra is not a person who is anti-sex!). It is *she*, after all,
who brings up the idea that she thinks Jamie has *already* been doing
the 70, etc, and it doesn't seem that she voices this idea with any
great amount of disgust (despite her later saying there'll be "none of
that [f******] here").
That impression I got is sort of reinforced by the screenplay: after
the "seventy minus one" line, the directions say "Jamie doesn't get the
*joke*" (emphasis mine)-- it is referred to as something Sandra says in
humor and teasing, not out of visceral loathing for the mere thought of
male-male sex. And after she says "We'll have none of that here", the
directions indicate: "She raises her eyes to high heaven." This more
seems to be the reaction of someone who, although she hardly believes
what is happening, still expects that this order might be one her son
will NOT follow, possibly? Not that the meaning we are to take from
the movie is dependent on a stage direction, but it does seem the intent
is to let the audience know that Sandra will be open to her son's "new
life" (after a reasonable transition, of course).
>Jonathan gave us a fantasy ending that doesn't hold up to close
scrutiny.
Well, not if being scrutinized as the strictest of realities it doesn't,
but if the ending indeed does cross into the realm of fantasy (as I
believe it does, and can, without destroying the "down to Earth" nature
of the rest of the movie), then the only scrutiny is: "Is it a true
fairy tale ending?" On that score, there is no question. And even by
a stretch, it is somewhat foreshadowed as a realistic ending by that
same acceptance (maybe "too-ready acceptance", but there is so little
time to show anything in 88 minutes!) Sandra shows, almost from the
start. I think Sandra in some ways was more upset that Jamie lied to
her than that he is gay; once *that* is "out in the open" and out of
the way, her maternal (and non-judgmental) nature takes over, IMO.
>As you say, Ronnie and Trevor are sure to find out that Ste is queer,
and
>will probably use him as a punching bag. Perhaps Sandra calls the cops
on
>them and gets them thrown into jail!
We could only hope! In the US, it seems we hear so often of children
removed from parental custody for having been given spankings, even;
we can only hope the British Social Services would intervene if real
child abuse (such as Ste has *already* suffered in the movie) were
brought to light! Does anyone know if such interventions are the norm
in England?

I guess I wasn't too clear on this point! I don't think Sandra would be
"disgusted" by the gay sexual act, as you say. My point is really: would
Sandra want her 15 year old son and his 16 year old lover living together
at their age? Certainly, if Jamie was straight, no mother would be likely
to allow him to let his girlfriend move in with him. So applying the same
rules, I'm not sure that Sandra would want them living together, in her
house, at that age. Different matter entirely!

Here we go again. Funny, the *same* concerns -- repetiton and too many
messages -- were expressed last year. Nevertheless, I still enjoy the email
list. And many of us have seen the three incarnations of it. It's
refreshing to see the new set of discussions. Actually, I haven't seen a
lot of redundant discussion this time around.
Have at it!

I agree with Jeffo. There's not too much repetition. AND, I never would
have known about BT in Chicago if I didn't belong to the list!
Viva La List!

What puzzles me even more are some posts that have appeared on the
USENET newsgroup claiming that most all of mailing list posts just said,
"Me, too." I wondered, maybe in some Twilight Zone universe there was an
alternate BT list they were subscribed to. <G>

That's reassuring, Keith. <G> I'll be more "alive" once I finish this
third and final week of May term. The paycheck Friday will be very, very
nice, but I need a break. I just wish I could arrange to get to Chicago
next week, but it looks iffy, even with the nice paycheck. Wish I could
go the following week and meet those who are attending then, but I've
got the first week of summer classes and weekend church work. Oh,
well. In six more weeks I'll be in Hot'lanta for Pride weekend and I've
booked a hotel room walking distance from Piedmont Park, where 325,000
or so will be gathered for Pride.

Ditto from me. Sure, it gets repetitive now and then, but NEVER to the point of being boring.
Each of us always brings something slightly different to the discussion.
Besides, this list is about Beautiful Thing, after all. If you didn't want to discuss it, why would
you join the list in the first place????

Not because I am bored with the messages sent to this page, but because I
am in the process of moving, I will soon unsubscribe to the bt list. I
just want to take the opportunity to thank all of you for your enthusiasm
and insights regarding a film that I hold very dear to my heart. Through
this list I have made a most wonderful friend in Dick Corrigan, have
grown to feel a community amongst a gay community that I wasn't sure
existed, and grown to believe that there are BEAUTIFUL things waiting for
us all, if we are just patient and optimistic enough to believe it!! God
bless you all, for you know not how much you have helped one scared queer
in upstate New York!!!
My Love Always,
Mark

Hi BT Listers
Here's a quick impression of the first preview of Famous Door Theatre
Company's production of Beautiful Thing which I saw last Saturday night in
Chicago. I'm going to the Premier on Thursday - which includes a reception
afterwards where I may have a chance to talk to the director and cast a bit...
I'll write a more detailed review after that.
(Eric)
so....
How was the play???!!
(Jay)
It was wonderful, of course...
I was amazed to find myself crying at several points, even though I've seen it
all a couple dozen times now. Jonathan's dialog continues to impress me. I
brought along a new aquaintance, in his mid-twenties, who is just coming out.
He comes from a fundamentalist background, with a scarey and abusive father.
He whispered to me about 10 minutes into the show "this is fabulous!" and kept
repeating the phrase under his breath at key points during the play. We had a
long talk over coffee afterwards.
The theatre is small, and therefore quite intimate. The set does evoke
Thamesmead - when I sat down and started looking around (no curtain) I decided
quickly "this will work". It's not exactly like the real place, but it evokes
the right mood, maybe better than the movie in someways as it's not "brighted-
up" at all. Jamie's bedroom (well, just bed and lamp, really) was put right
down on the floor in front of the first row of seats. VERY intimate!
The cast is for the most part really great. They all appear to be from ISU
(Illinois State Univ). The actress playing Sandra is undoubtedly the most
accomplished of the lot (sorry, I don't have the names of the actors with me)
with good experience under her belt. Her Sandra was wonderful, dynamic, fun,
feisty. The actress playing Leah was very good, and a hit with the audience.
She has been acting professionally for a few years, and the experience shows
here too. Tony seemed a little weak (but then he is a weak character), and
maybe I'm just a Ben Daniels fan. The young man who played Jamie was
fabulous, I predict he has a great career ahead of him if he keeps it up.
This is his first professional appearance, and the first preview, so I made
allowances for that. But, he was fun to watch, the sort of actor who commands
attention when he walks onto the stage. High energy. The young man playing
Ste is still in high school, with very little experience. Given that he did a
bang-up job, and he is gorgeous with his shirt off, but, his current acting
level is nothing like Scott Neal's. So, he's the weak point, IMO.
The accents were interesting. Last year I was of the opinion that you
couldn't do BT here because no-one could really get the accents right. I was
wrong. Sandra and Jamie's accents were impeccable, although more clearly
spoken that a native might (and therefore more understandable). Ste's accent
kept wavering in and out of midwesternisms - he need to practice a little
more! Tony's accent didn't strike me a quite right - it's very hard, because
his is supposed to have a University educated British accent trying to speak
like an EastEnder...Leah's accent was great as well, and she got the EastEnder
mimicking a American accent very well.
Which reminds me, the "acid-trip" scene works really well in the play, I liked
it better than the movie version. The slap fight between Jamie and his mom
was a highlight, very well done. Jamie is played a little more "femme" than
Glen did in the movie, and I think it works better. The bedroom scenes were
very touching, just as magical as in the film, maybe moreso because they were
live! Sandra's confrontation with Jamie over the trip to the Gloucester was
not as powerful as in the film, but my feeling is this is something that both
actors need to work on, and that they have the potential to do well. It is a
VERY difficult scene, and I can't imagine trying to do it before a live
audience.
Hmm....the pacing could have been tighter, but this was the first preview,
what the heck. If it's still like that at the premier I'll talk to the
director!
Anyhow, Eric, looking forward to seeing you and Jeff in June, you won't be
sorry!

Jay,
Thanks for filling us in on the play. Reading your review brought back so
many memories of when I saw it on stage in Sydney...like accents wavering
in and out and the pacing.
Thanks. Hope to catch you on IRC again sometime.
Andy.

Hi, I wanted to get in several re:'s at once here.
Jay, your thorough and clearly objective review of the play made me even
sorrier I won't be seeing it (although just knowing the London
get-together is so near kinda makes up for it some <G>); but I hope as
many of the btlisters as possible (of the US contingent, anyway) get to
meet up for a wild performance-- I mean of the Play!! This London
rendezvous will be my first-ever "ftf" with someone-- lots of
"someone's"!-- from the 'Net and I am pretty excited about it, let me
tell ya!
Eric, I especially liked the Scott Neal publicity-type photo, and the
(video capture?) of Glen/Jamie smiling near the fence(?) that you
posted. You seem to have quite a supply of previously-unpublished
material! Is the blond guy Jonathan Harvey (or is that a stupid
question)? I guess the answer to both might be "yes!"
About the mail deluge (which, not unusually, has been followed by an
email trickle): as well as finding Keith's and Gary's comments totally
to the point and completely correct, I have a question for all you
computer guys and gals (which-- given the lists' perceived Single
Biggest Flaw-- maybe anybody interested in answering me should do so
individually-- we don't want a lot of repetitive posts)!! On WebTV, I
can only have 150 messages in my inbox, and save 150 more; on my
Hotmail account, I gather I can have 2Mb storage, which depending on
letter length would still be much in excess of 200 messages. So, what
I don't get is-- do the computers also limit how much email you can
have? If you save files to disks, doesn't that free up your email?
It seems like it would be so easy to simply delete a message after you
read it if you don't want to save it, and save it on a floppy if you do.
What's the Big Deal DISadvantage of getting a lot of emails? And we
aren't talking hundreds a day, as at least *one* of us (and you know who
you are! :)) says is possible to get from a single list. I realize
others may subscribe to multiple emailing lists (I am just on the two BT
lists), and have a large number of emails to read daily (or accumulate),
but even so... it doesn't take all that long to go through them-- or
does it?
Sorry to have wasted the time of any kind soul who didn't want to waste
time going through *this* one!
Puzzled Kent
who knows he is missing something here (*besides* his higher brain
functions-- those have been long gone! :)), but can't quite figure out
what it is...

Ian has been sending me this latest stuff, and he hasn't told me where he
is getting it. That's not a video capture of Jamie at the fence (no such
scene appears in the film... you should know that!!) but a between scenes
publicity picture. And yes, that Blond guy is Jonathan! And no, that's not
a stupid question.
Laters,
Eric
