Kent,
To answer your question (I hope), computers handle email very similar to WebTV, the
only difference being, most mail programs "download" the email to the local hard drive
when you read your email, thus clearing out you email inbox, and saving it locally so you can
go back and read it at anytime. Once downloaded to your hard drive, the only limit to
how much email you can store is how big your hard drive is. (See, size *does* matter, like
I said ;) For example, my email folder contains ~ 3000 stored messages, and is occupying
60 mb. Storage space won't be a problem anytime soon. Hope that helps. I think people
that don't like the email are more concerned with checking their email every few days, and
depending how many lists they're on, having literally hundreds of messages to plow through.
It can leave one a little overwhelmed, which is why I don't subscribe to every list I come
across.
Keith

>>> "Kent ." <btfan 05/19/98 07:55PM >>>
About the mail deluge (which, not unusually, has been followed by an
email trickle): as well as finding Keith's and Gary's comments totally
to the point and completely correct, I have a question for all you
computer guys and gals (which-- given the lists' perceived Single
Biggest Flaw-- maybe anybody interested in answering me should do so
individually-- we don't want a lot of repetitive posts)!! On WebTV, I
can only have 150 messages in my inbox, and save 150 more; on my
Hotmail account, I gather I can have 2Mb storage, which depending on
letter length would still be much in excess of 200 messages. So, what
I don't get is-- do the computers also limit how much email you can
have? If you save files to disks, doesn't that free up your email?
It seems like it would be so easy to simply delete a message after you
read it if you don't want to save it, and save it on a floppy if you do.
What's the Big Deal DISadvantage of getting a lot of emails? And we
aren't talking hundreds a day, as at least *one* of us (and you know who
you are! :)) says is possible to get from a single list. I realize
others may subscribe to multiple emailing lists (I am just on the two BT
lists), and have a large number of emails to read daily (or accumulate),
but even so... it doesn't take all that long to go through them-- or
does it?
Sorry to have wasted the time of any kind soul who didn't want to waste
time going through *this* one!
Puzzled Kent
who knows he is missing something here (*besides* his higher brain
functions-- those have been long gone! :)), but can't quite figure out
what it is...

Err, you should believe me if I say I *did* know it wasn't from the

but at least that way I'll feel so much better <G>. And I could even

Forgive me with the questions, but Ian who? (Anyway, Hi, Ian! Great

Thanks Keith, for the detailed explanation about computer email
(someday, maybe, I will actually own a computer!).
As for the In and Out question, I thought the kid was hinted at being
gay earlier in the movie, but as I haven't seen it lately, I can't give a
concrete example of why I had that impression.

When I saw it, I assumed it was just a show of support. There's no way to

At first (the first time I saw the movie), I thought he WAS actually coming out,
but when I saw it the second time (relax, I only saw it twice!), I already knew
the outcome, and it didn't have the same effect on me (i.e., I didn't think he
was coming out anymore). But still, my sixth sense usually isn't wrong about
things like this (it's about the only thing it's used for ! ;) ). My vote is
that the kid actually WAS gay, and stood up to say so to support Klein, but the
rest of (straight) society jumped on the bandwagon, and made for a touching
ending.
Remember, he never said he was gay *because he was a student of the Klein
character*, whereas the rest did (in some way or another).
Whew!
How's that for analysis?!

It was kind of ambiguous, but I think he was straight and just showing
support. Kline's character was a real freind to the kid (driving him to his
college interview, etc.), so the kid probably just couldn't stand to see
Kline's career ruined at the graduation, so he impulsively said what he did.
Just my opinion!

Interesting question. I saw the film when it was in theaters and, this
past weekend, I watched it on Primestar's pay-per-view and I taped it.
This second time through I paid more attention to that one boy earlier
on in the film and I suspect that he might actually be coming out,
although the others in the scene are clearly attempting to make a point
against discrimination. Remember that a gay man, Paul Rudnick, wrote the
script for the movie. And it seemed to me that there are hints - very,
very subtle ones - about this boy in earlier scenes in the film.
Just as we've speculated (and even written) about what happens to Jamie
and Ste after the BT story ends on film, it's interesting to speculate
as to what happens to this boy after "In and Out" ends. After all, he's
got a scholarship to college, he's leaving home and going to a
moderately large university. Interesting to speculate about.

That's a tough one. I believe that the young man (played by Shawn Hatosy) is
actually straight, though I'm only thinking this because of his reactions
earlier in the film. However, he does seem very serious when he says that
he's gay. Only the writers know for sure.

If he's not gay, then he's dug himself a big hole that will haunt him for

It's been a big week for stories sent in to the mailing list. Most of them
have made it to this weeks web site update. Jean has sent in more of the
"Gravesend" story...an alternative part 9 starts you off and goes all the
way through to part 14. Sandra sent in "Love at First Sight". It's in
Spanish but for the rest of us Jean has kindly done an English translation.
New writer-holic Joshua has been on the stories list only a week and has
several parts ready of his story(s). Joshy's stories are hosted at his own
web site but we've added links for you to find them. Kent concludes his
"Wet" story this week with part 7. And finally, Graham's part 5 and 6 of
"The Club" are now online.

Awards

According to the new issue of Genre, cable (and satellite) Sundance
Channel will be showing _17_ gay themed films in June, including, yes,
Beautiful Thing!
I had a suspicion that, if any American cable channel would carry BT, it
would be Sundance. Sundance normally goes heavy on gay-themed films in
June, Pride month.
So for American members of the list, now is the time to find friends,
heck, even enemies you can befriend <G>, who have Sundance Channel so
you can watch (and, of course, tape) BT in June.

Hello all,
After I saw BT recently I began a search for other great gay coming of age
stories on film but haven't had a lot of luck. I was wondering if any of you
could make some suggestions.
I did see Boy's Life and would highly reccomend that. I've heard Toilers and
Wayfarers is good also.
Even coming of age films without a strong gay theme would be worth checking
out if they're good. For example, on Saturday May 23rd the Bravo cable network
will be rerunning a movie called "Reunion" at 3pm est. It's a coming of age
story set before WWII... no gay characters, but one of the lead boys is
extremely cute.

Hi fellow listmembers,
Several of you have written to me about the fact that btlist and btfanlist went silent all of a sudden.
Apparently baremetal.com, the service where the lists are running, did an update of the list-software,
and they have come accross several problems concerning our lists. (badly converted config files,
bad directory structures, etc...)
I assure you that everything needed will be done to get the lists up and running again.
In the meantime I'd like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by all of this, and hope that you
all will remain as patient as you have been the last couple of days.
Since I don't have a memberlist of the stories list: if you know a person that is on the list,
please forward this email to them to let them know what's happening...
I'll be in touch.

Subject: btlist: ADMIN:Problems solved!

Hi folks!
As you can see, the problems appear to have been resolved, everything should be in good
working order now.
Here's what was going on:
baremetal.com (the domain which the mailing lists run on) decided to update their
mailing-list software.
They decided to go for a new package, and needed to convert all configuration files
accordingly.
The main reason for btlist and btfanlist dying was that initially they forgot to include our lists in the
configuration, resulting in the 'disappearance' of the two lists.
When we pointed out to them that something was wrong, staff quickly jumped in, did a manual
adaptation of the configuration files, and notified us that the lists were up again.
Well, in a way they were, but all sorts of weird thing happened. This resulted in an extensive e-mail
exchange with support, and several staff members jumping in to solve the problem.
Apparently (since you are reading this, everything MUST be right again) all the typo's in the
config file have been removed, and I'm currently revising the list configuration files, to make
sure that they are in perfect order.
So allthough it has taken some time, everything is just fine right now, and we can go back to
doing what we like to do, which is posting to btlist and the fan fiction archive. (btfanlist)
Thanx again for your patience!

I am soooo envious that you talked that much with Jonathan Harvey, but
very glad you got to mention our little group's existence to him and the
cast-- and especially grateful you took the time to tell us about your
experience! I bet, once US cable shows the film, even if in the
lesser-known realm of the Sundance movie channel, BT will experience
another upsurge of interest-- and once it's been on cable, PBS will
hopefully follow someday, to an even wider US audience.
Thanks also to Eric, for his latest additions-- having the slang

Subject: btlist: Beautiful Thing in Chicago
Hiya BTers,
I've gotta be brief again, but (now that it appears the list is back up), I
wanted to
let you know that I attended the premier of Beautiful Thing in Chicago last
Thursday
(May 21st) (thank you eric, for insisting that I should go). You may remember
that
I also went to the first preview, and sent a brief review to the list last
week.
The premiere was attended by press, friends of the players, and, to my
surprise and delight, JONATHAN HARVEY himself! I had the privilege of talking
with him for over an hour afterwards at a reception that was held in an
English Pub nearby. I also spoke with the director and most of the actors.
They were all amazed and delighted to hear about the fan club!
I had spotted Jonathan in the lobby before the play started, and watched him
out of the corner of my eye during the performance to see how he was reacting
to the acting, and to his own play. He was all smiles the entire time. The
audience (mostly str8, many of whom apparently did not know anything about the
plot beforehand) loved it as well.
Jonathan told me that when he arrived the day before and attended a rehersal
he had initially had a hard time with the accents and that he had worked all
day with the cast on their speech patterns and on slowing down, relaxing,
speaking from the heart. The results were evident at the premier, and the
actors acknowledged this to me as well (that Jonathan's coaching had made a
big difference).
Of the preview I had noted in my last post:
> Hmm....the pacing could have been tighter, but this was the first preview,
> what the heck. If it's still like that at the premier I'll talk to the
> director!
Didn't have to! Jonathan had already taken care of that. The pacing was very
close to perfect...the play "felt" like the play, so much that I found that I
could forget about the mechanics and get into the feeling, the "magic" of the
play. It was a realy Beautiful Thing experience! And, the actors had
"gotten over" the accents, so that, even if they weren't perfect, they were
believable within the "world" of the play.

> Sandra's confrontation with Jamie over the trip to the Gloucester was
> not as powerful as in the film, but my feeling is this is something that
> both actors need to work on, and that they have the potential to do well.
The scene was much much better at the premier...This time Sandra actually
touched and caressed her son, and the tenderness of the scene was more fully
developed.
Well, that's all I have time for now... Looking forward to our big BT party
here on the 6th...so far 4 guys are coming in from various points in the US,
and the cast of BT is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the "fan club"!

Subject: Welcome!
Precedence: bulk
Hiya peeps!
Thanx to Kent and Sandra, who on-line were discussing the future of the mailing list, I learned about the problems of the older list.
We then decided, on-line, that it would be an wise decision to transfer the
list to someplace else, since Chris obviously lacks the time right now to
solve these problems. I would like to thank Chris for his efforts, and hope
that he will remain ADMIN for the list even though it has been transferred to
another system.
As the problems mentioned above have persisted for quite some time, I would
like to know if any of you people would like a resubmission of the last
couple of messages, since it's conceivable that not everyone on the list got
the last messages.
What I would like each and everyone of you to do is send the last message you
have on your system to
owner-btlist@tenr.com
to enable me to make an inventory of who got which message last.
Also this would give me an opportunity to check if the list is really alive,
i.e. that everyone gets the mail submitted to this new list.
So please oblige me, and send your last received message on the OLD list
Please don't send the message to the new list, as we might create several
duplicates that way...

Subject: 2nd annual celebration of genereal release of BT in UK
Hi there, member of the BT fanclub!

In June this year the BT fanclub once again will arrange a meeting in London, to celebrate the

fact that the general release of BT took place 2 years ago.
Marc (Anderson) and I have worked out the following timetable:

June 13th 1998
11:00We meet at the Goucester to get acquainted, have something to drink,
and perhaps a little bite to eat...
If ppl would want, they could also go for a brisk walk thru the park.
'Legs astride the meridian' so to speak....
13:00We leave for a 1 Mile walk to the Cutty Sark pub, which featured as
'The Anchor' in the film.
Marc Anderson and his lovely wife Sarah Jayne will meet us there.
14:00We will leave for Thamesmead on the 180 bus.
Off course we will ride on the top deck, so we can see all the beautiful
sights en route...
15:00We arrive in Thamesmead East and get off the bus at the first stop.
Marc and Sarah will do the tour, and tell us all there is to know about
the filming of Beautiful Thing.
17:00We will return to the Gloucester where Graeme hopefully has prepared
a scrumptious meal for us.
19:00We all dig in to whatever Graeme has prepared for us...
21:00The Gloucester is not only a 'pub' but they also provide great
entertainment. I'm not sure what they'll have in store for us,
but you may assume it'll be worth wile!
23:00The Gloucester will close for the night, so we need to go elsewhere.
We're thinking about visiting Oxley woods, and maybe creating some
remakes of the kissing scene between Jamie and Ste.
??:??We leave for our hotel: the Swallow Hotel at BexleyHeath, which is
actually quite near Oxley Woods (only a 30 min bus ride away, by
night bus)

June 14th 1998
11:00We have great plans for this afternoon!
Obviously we don't wanna spoil the surprise, but it has got something to do
with Beautiful Thing.
It will be near Central London, so we need to leave early, to get there in time.
We will leave by bus for Greenwich and will board a Thames cruiser, to float
us to central London, where we will get off, hopefully somewhere near
London Bridge.
Near London Bridge we will witness a very special occasion, if all goes
well (hopefully)
16:00About this time we will leave for some free time....
We reccomend doing a tour through SOHO, not forgetting to visit
Old Compton Road, and the Old Compton itself, as well as
Divine and several other nice shops and pubs in the area.
22:00For those who are staying another night, this is the time to visit
Heaven. Don't worry about a dress-code, they don't have one...
Just be decent, that's all they want from you. And remember,
drinks are expensive there, so look your cutest and have others
provide drinks for you!
An updated version of this timetable can be found on

We intend to book rooms at the Swallow Hotel in BexleyHeath, a brandnew hotel,
which hopefully will do us a bit of a discount.
If you would like to take advantage of this (at this moment purely
hypothetical) discount, or would like to book through us, please drop us a
line so we'd know what to expect. Also if you intend to attend to the program
on the 13th and 14th of june, please let us know, so we know how many there
will be for dinner at the Gloucester.
Remember that this will probably be your last chance to visit the Tavy Bridge
area (Thamesmead) in its present state, since huge remodelling is going to
take place starting next September. This also means that we will make this a
very special occasion, and plan to do lots of exciting things with lots of
exciting people.... <g>
Furthermore, if you have ANY ideas as to what we could do during the meet,
please tell us, we will be happy to try and arrange anything you would like,
though I'm sure that most of that is already planned for..... :-)
More info?
Look at the weblocation above, or drop us a line!

See y'all later

Hello,
Beautiful-Thing|
Beautiful-Thing| I'm the coordinator of a group of Beautiful-Thing fans (a
film by Hettie MacDonald, you might have heard about it) who have planned a
fanmeet in London on june 12/13/14/15.
Beautiful-Thing|
Beautiful-Thing| We are looking for cheap accomotation for that period, but
having said that, we also need it to be somewhat flexible.
Beautiful-Thing| The problem is that we are at this time not sure how many
ppl we need to accomodate, and for how many nights.
Beautiful-Thing| the group may vary from 10 to anything above 20, but 10 ppl
definitely need accomodation.
Beautiful-Thing| The dutch contingent, the only group I really have insight
in (7 of them) will def. stay all three nights (12-13 / 13-14 / 14-15 june)
Beautiful-Thing| The german and UK guys attending (def. 3) havent been able
to inform me about thier schedule yet.
Beautiful-Thing| Another problem we have is that our itinerary will be
published in a dutch maGAYzine at the end of this month, and we might get
some late entries from that as well.
Beautiful-Thing|
Beautiful-Thing| You can imagine the pressure I'm under, being responsible
for the accomodation.
Beautiful-Thing|
Beautiful-Thing| So here goes: can you help?
Beautiful-Thing| And if yes, how would we set this up?
Beautiful-Thing|
Beautiful-Thing| Obviously we would like to stay as a group, not neccessarily
in one building, but preferably close to eachother.
Beautiful-Thing| As we are on a very tight budget (yeah, aren't they all) we
would very much appreciate inexpensive lodgings. We don't need much, but
several of the group would appreciate a shower tho...
Beautiful-Thing|
Beautiful-Thing| If you would prefer me to give you a (phone)call, or have my
London-representative (Marc Anderson) contact you (either by phone or in
person), please let me know, so I will make arrangements for that.
Beautiful-Thing|
Beautiful-Thing| Please contact me asap, as I just realised time seems to be
running out on me rapidly on this one. (I din't realise it would be only
about 7 weeks till june 12th...) I'm getting a bit desperate here.... <g>

WHAT MUST I DO TO BE TAKEN OFF THE LIST?!?!??

Subject: btlist: ADMIN:Problems solved!
Hi folks!
As you can see, the problems appear to have been resolved, everything should be in good working order now.
Here's what was going on:
baremetal.com (the domain which the mailing lists run on) decided to update their mailing-list software.
They decided to go for a new package, and needed to convert all configuration files accordingly.
The main reason for btlist and btfanlist dying was that initially they forgot to include our lists in
the configuration, resulting in the 'disappearance' of the two lists.
When we pointed out to them that something was wrong, staff quickly jumped in, did a manual
adaptation of the configuration files, and notified us that the lists were up again.
Well, in a way they were, but all sorts of weird thing happened. This resulted in an extensive
e-mail exchange with support, and several staff members jumping in to solve the problem.
Apparently (since you are reading this, everything MUST be right again) all the typo's in the
config file have been removed, and I'm currently revising the list configuration files, to make sure
that they are in perfect order.
So although it has taken some time, everything is just fine right now, and we can go back to
doing what we like to do, which is posting to btlist and the fan fiction archive. (btfanlist)
Thanx again for your patience!
Andre

Hi everyone,
This weeks archive update has a few interesting additions. The main banner
has been tweaked...the rainbow logo has gone and been replaced with a
mysterious 'sky-writer' apparently seen flying over Thamesmead recently! ;)
It adds up to a smaller file size too.
Three new stories this week. Jean's story titled "Out n' About" is based on
a single line of dialogue from scene 88 of the screenplay. Gavin's "The
Saga Continues" into it's final part 7. Graham's "The Club" is up to part 7.
If you're wondering where the Christmas stories are, they've been put on
hold until a special occasion.
After a flood of awards in recent weeks, I've created an Awards Gallery. No
new awards received this week but we're still in the running for a Totally
Cool Queer Site Award. You'll find a link on the main page for where to
vote.
This week see's the debut of the BT-Stories Chatroom. It's a Java based
Web-Chat system and needs a Java enabled web browser to use it.
Unfortunately it's NOT compatible with WebTV, sorry Kent! It's only the
free version, so it's small on features!
Joan sent the mailing list a couple of sketches, which were really nice.
Just for Sandra, who couldn't see them, point your web browser to...
As I didn't ask Joan first (sorry Joan), this is a hidden page, there is no
link to it from the main index. I'll keep it there for a week unless Joan
wants it to stay.

I recently wrote to the producer of the Edinburgh production of BT. He sent me the email below.
I will keep the list up-to-date of any events.
Is anybody thinking of going to see BT in Edinburgh? I shall be travelling up form
London and hope to perhaps meet a few BTers there. Apparently, it may already
be too late to book accommodation as the Edinburgh Festival is extremely popular :(
